Carefully coded into an electronic brain and implanted into a lab-grown organic body, a freak accident 'freed' Dave from his creators long before he was meant to be completed. While finished enough to be fully sapient, incomplete coding kept him from thinking entirely like a normal human. This, along with some hefty culture shock, drove him a little nuts. He's been rampaging across the galaxy ever since, seeking wealth and power wherever he might find it.
