Makani is the adopted daughter of the demi-goddess of the sea and protector of sailors/other mariners-- Aella. Makani's egg was given to Aella against the wishes of the goddess that Aella serves, because unbeknownst to Aella having a child was a deep-rooted wish of hers. Makani's egg was blessed by a wind god, so as she is growing she starts to exhibit powers of her own, very much like her mother's. She is strong, but not very independent-- she's fiercely loyal to her mother and rarely leaves her mother's side for very long unless it is to visit her friend Cecily and have an adventure or two alongside her. As a small kid, she would call her mother's goddess-- the Lady Brizo-- "grandma" or some variation just as a natural instinct (much to Brizo's disdain) however, as she grows she starts doing it more sarcastically, or to annoy Brizo. Needless to say, she is far more loyal and respectful toward her mother, than the goddess herself. It comes as no surprise to Makani when she learns that Brizo has been lying to her mother for centuries, nor does it surprise her when her mother becomes mates with her priestess Nazira. She accepts her easily as a mother, and is happy to be adopted by her. She's jealous, a bit, when her baby sister Haalais born but she grows to love her perhaps more than even her mothers eventually.
