We're all going to die, and you know it. Get over yourself.
Joel was an orphan who was born into the Noxian slums where he grew up. Never one to get close to others, and always distrustful, he regarded the world's system of putting D-SEC on a pedestal as being absolute trash and promised himself he would refuse to take part in it. In this way, he started to revere Freedom and Zeriah, for they stood up against the established norm with such confidence...and he wanted to emulate that. Upon hearing that Freedom was in the area, he ran away from home and managed to track them down, and was adopted into the group by Zeriah.
Joel has never been one for words, but he is not careful about how he uses them. He's usually quite solitary (he enjoys keeping to himself as opposed to being around others) and at first, might seem almost shy for how little he converses with those around him. However, he is prone to getting irritated easily, and has a sharp tongue. He doesn't know how to parse his words and is very truthfully blunt, even when others don't want to hear it. Some, like Korudo, appreciate it, however - making him more well-liked than he knows.
Joel is one of the main characters of Time of Death, and is Shire's eventual love interest. He is a skilled Freedom agent and has the will to accomplish anything, but he is still young and has a lot of growing up to do.
Zeriah Temorali
[ beacon of hope ]
Joel's fascination with Zeriah and Freedom is almost akin to worship. He views Zeriah especially in such a positive light that he sometimes gets carried away with wanting to be useful to him, although whenever anyone points that out, he becomes very flustered.
Korudo Ikaara
[ teammate ]
Although Joel scarcely gets along with his teammates, he and Korudo spend much time together and Joel enjoys his company quite a bit. He loves to learn whatever he can, and Korudo often teaches him about weapon maintenance or medicine.
Shire Dynatius
[ rival ]
Joel doesn't trust Shire at all once she joins Freedom, but over the course of the story, the two of them become surprisingly close. He feels the need to compete with her for Zeriah's attention, though.
