Summary

Theme: Haunted by Poe
MBTI: INTP - Enneagram: 6w5

Morgan is something of an oddity to the world - once a normal university student, he was trapped in Faerie in his early twenties under unknown circumstances, only to be rescued after many years had passed in the mortal realm. After an extended period of adjustment, he transferred to a different school and resumed his studies, eventually coming to teach at his current university. Life is... okay, but from rumors and suspicion, to illness, to a creeping longing for the bright realm of the fae that he's not sure is entirely his own, his past continues to hang over him.

Personality-wise, Morgan is a generally pleasant person: thoughtful, curious, moderately sociable, and not one to judge. He's generally liked by his students and colleagues, with a reputation for being strict but fair, as well as dedicated to his work and the well-being of those around him. Despite this, he carries an air of subdued weariness, and though it's clear only to those who know him, a quiet, persistent worry under his outward calm.

  • "under the layers of Nerd he's this unkempt but weirdly beautiful man who is not always present in reality" -- testimonial by Shazzbaa
Trivia

General

  • Between not aging while in Faerie and the general strangeness of time in that realm, he's not sure how old he actually is.
  • He keeps a curious pendant in his pocket: a leather leaf the size of his thumb, seemingly torn from some larger object. It's cunningly embossed, stained an unfading autumn-red, and strung on a fine gold chain. Few people know it exists.
  • He's mostly adapted to modern language, but he still has a little of an accent.
  • He's still used to fae etiquette, which means things like avoiding favors, watching his words carefully, and referring to the fae only by polite titles. He's been adjusting back, but sometimes it takes him a moment, and sometimes he sounds like a relic or comes off as rude (ironically).
  • Dresses like an anachronism, even for this weird mixed modern-fantasy world. Like, seriously, who wears a tricorn hat these days??

Fae-Touched

Faerie is a realm as lethal as it is beautiful, and those who are taken never come back the same. The realm of the fae is far brighter and far more intense than the mortal world, and over half of those who return waste away or commit suicide. The remaining half are called fae-touched, and must contend with both a lifetime of mental and physical issues as well as suspicion and stigma.

  • Morgan has gone through extensive rehabilitation and continues to keep up with medication. Neither have completely cured his issues, but they've made life livable again.
  • Both food and drink have been ruined for Morgan - though his sense of taste is unaffected, his perception has been permanently altered from partaking of them in Faerie. He's able to make himself eat and drink enough to stay alive, but neither are pleasurable anymore. Novelty helps in that trying new things does temporarily override the effects, and he's known in his friend circle for ordering the most bizarre things on the menu whenever they go out to eat. He still finds himself unable to eat most autumn fruits, and has a profound weariness towards pomegranates in particular.
  • For the most part, Morgan is unaffected by physical attractiveness. No one is as beautiful as the fae. If someone shows distinctly un-fae emotion in an endearing way, though - say, a normally put-together person getting flustered - he can get flustered himself.
  • The mortal world has a persistent feeling of unreality and dimness for him, which wanes and waxes. Most days, he's alright, but other days he finds it difficult to do anything.
  • He sometimes "goes strange" - an altered state where his mentality becomes something more fae. His persuasiveness and presence increase dramatically, and he feels powerful and alive in a way that's hard for him to describe. However, it's harder to make mortal-world-appropriate judgements under its influence, and always results in a spike of other symptoms and a crash.
  • Certain topics, activities, and circumstances can cause him to slide into going strange. He does his best to avoid these, but he often finds himself longing for the sheer aliveness of the state, and sometimes deliberately dips into it when he needs a boost.
  • Other, smaller effects - he can feel the value of items that are presented with, finds it difficult to tell direct lies (though not lies of omission), and finds the touch of iron grating.

Magipsychology

Magipsychology is, in short, the study of how mind and magic interact. While it's not Morgan's primary interest, it's one that he still finds relevant, accessible, enjoyable, and though he doesn't say it, reassuringly human.

  • While a fairly understanding professor for disability and extenuating circumstances, Morgan is otherwise quite strict, especially with students who are genuinely just slacking. He also has a reputation for being difficult to bullshit.
  • Morgan's primary interest is in magipsychiatry, the branch that deals with clinical applications of the field. He also has an interest in allurements, or rather the effects thereof - how enchantments can alter belief, perception, and desire - and keeps up with developments regarding treating the fae-touched.

Rumors

While he doesn't go into detail about his past, it's hardly a secret, either. As a result, various rumors have been spread about Morgan, especially by the student base. They include:

  • That he's a spy or a sleeper agent for the fae. (denied)
  • That he took a faery lover, and sired a half-fae child. (vigorously denied on the latter, no comment on the former)
  • That the fae stole his heart and he is no longer able to love. (no comment)
  • That he sold his soul to the fae for demonic powers. (denied, with an explanation of how the fae are not demons)
  • That he was sold to the fae by a jilted lover. (denied)
  • That he isn't actually the original Morgan, but a changeling convinced they're him. (denied)
  • That he sold himself to the fae to save a friend, or a lover. (denied, while wondering why people care so much about his love life)

Setting Notes

  • This setting was originally created by Shazzbaa for Professor August, and became a collaboration when friends made it into an AU for their own characters. Very little is solid about it.
  • Generally, the world is a strange mix of modern and magical. It has many fixtures of the modern world, with everything from tiny laptops to coffee chains, but magic coexists (sometimes uneasily) alongside tech, numerous fantasy races coexist (also sometimes uneasily) alongside each other, and all of the myths are real, or at least have some basis in fact.
  • Much of this world's interpretation of fae lore, down to some of the language, was heavily inspired by Elsewhere University's interpretations. The Fair Folk (not to be confused with the various elven races) are a class of beings unto their own, of a plane alien to mortalkind that abides by its own rules. They do not come into the mortal world except in certain "thin places," but that doesn't keep them from being dangerous to those who live nearby. There are organizations dedicated to negotiating with the fae (including the one that rescued Morgan), but in many cases "negotiate" is just a euphemism for "damage control."
  • Morgan's current university is primarily a magical one, devoted to research of magical topics and staffed primarily by mages. There are, however, some non-mages like Morgan who teach, study, and research there, since magic touches almost every aspect of life.
