Profile
An amateur witch who’s working hard to start over after he nearly lost his life to the Pit. He’s among the small handful of humans ever to have escaped it, saved by the magic pact he made to become Lilith’s familiar—but the time he spent there left a number of marks on him, visible or otherwise. Even so, Evelyn doesn’t like to dwell in the past. He may not have any impressive skills or powers, nor any grand ambitions driving him, but he’s got a big heart and a desire to improve, and that has to count for something.

Evelyn sees himself as a simple person with simple desires, and for the most part, that's not an inaccurate assessment. He likes to feel good. He also really hates to rock the boat. Having come back from the precipice of losing every last bit of himself to loneliness and despair, he’s more or less abandoned any pretenses of shame he might have once possessed. He’s a fountain of positivity, doesn’t feel a hint of guilt for what he loves, and tries his best to get along with everyone; he’s the type to lounge around with a stranger and listen to them vent for hours. And while his positivity is genuine, Lilith has noticed that he plays it up for other people with a familiar sort of performance—he’s more subdued in private.
On the other hand, it’s hard for Evelyn to say no. For so long, his survival depended on being a limp, giggling non-entity who played along with everything that came his way, and that isn't a particularly easy habit to break. This, combined with his dedication to maintaining Good Vibes, unfortunately makes him something of a doormat... And a frequent target for manipulation. Evelyn is not stupid—this reality isn’t something that goes over his head. Rather, he seems to believe that he can change people if he simply tries hard enough.
For a long time, the Pit was Evelyn's home. Without any sense of time in its twisting, dimly lit halls and overgrown rooms, he has no way of knowing how long he spent there. One can assume he was ensnared by the sentient chasm the same as any other human—without warning or choice, an unlucky slip through the cracks of reality. One can assume he was terrified to be ripped away from everything he knew in an instant and thrown into the depths of a cruel, hungry abyss with all the other lost things. One can assume that, as most humans, Evelyn didn't know not to accept the offerings of spirits, and that this simple mistake was his entry to the cycle of powerlessness and degradation that came to define this period of his life. But he can't remember, himself; after all, the Pit burrows its fingers deep into the mind, smoothing away memories of pain, of the material world, of humanity. Eventually, even his own name escaped him... Not that he needed one in the Pit. This existence of being tossed about at the whims of the Pit’s inhabitants became normal for Evelyn. He taught himself to have fun with it.
Then one day, along came a strange girl whose appearance caught him off-guard. It had been a long, long time since Evelyn had seen another human—well, one who was still in one piece and awake enough to converse with him. Her name was Lilith, she said. It was exciting, and a little scary, but mostly exciting, and in his excitement he may have gotten carried away and been too forward. Either way, something freaked the girl out, and her fear was infectious, especially when she broke down into panicked tears right in front of him. For the first time he could remember, Evelyn felt uncomfortable doubts nagging deep within him, ones that called into question the life he'd become accustomed to. It was only by becoming spiritually bound with her as familiars that he was eventually able to claw his way out from the Pit’s clutches.
Lilith [ familiar ]
The lengths she went to for his survival when he’d all but laid down to wait for his undoing helped Evelyn find his will to keep going. She sends a lot of mixed signals, but he loves Lilith dearly and believes in her without reservation. He likes teasing her more than anyone else, often showing her the most over-the-top version of himself just as much as the quiet, private one.
Bazi [ relationship ]
He’s very easy to be around, Evelyn thinks. It was a desire to prove himself worthy of being accepted into the Bet Arad family that first drove Evelyn to throw himself into the everyday farm work along with Bazi, but it actually turned out to be a great bonding activity for them. His feedback means a lot to Evelyn.
Nergal [ relationship ]
Evelyn tries hard to impress Nergal; it’s very important to him to have a good relationship with Lilith’s parents, and he can’t figure out why Nergal is so resistant. It frustrates him, even if he’ll never say it... But it only makes Evelyn more determined to get into his good graces.
