Hugh was certain that he was going to die. As a manatee, he was struck by a speeding boat, sustaining life threatening injuries and becoming beached as a result. Yes, he was sure that this was how he was going to die, in pain and stranded, until he saw a man approaching him. His memory of what exactly happened next is extremely unclear, as he was drifting in and out of consciousness at the time. However, he knows that when he was finally stable, his wounds had been tended to, and that his form had somehow been changed into that of a human.

Hugh found out that the man who had saved him and given him this humanity was none other than the King of Anthea, King Balthazar. Moved by this act of kindness, he swore loyalty to the king, promising to protect him as he had saved his own life.

Hugh is very gentle person for the most part. He prefers to let his intimidating size do most of the work for him, though he is more than capable of holding his own in a fight if he needs to. He's a quiet man, and tends to be somewhat shy when striking up conversations with those he doesn't know well. However, he's easily more talkative once he becomes more acquainted with someone. Despite his kindness, he still has a bit of a sarcastic streak in him, although it is sometimes hard to differentiate what's supposed to be a joke and what's serious.

- He has several large scars across his back from the accident. He really does not like having them out in the open, as he feels people tend to stare at him.
