a strange boy who appeared in the waters surrounding the island of wharf one day with no memory of where he came from or, for that matter, anything at all. he was found buried under rocks and awakened by skipper, who took him in, befriended him, and convinced him that they should join the island's marine exploration boarding school together.

half of phi's body is composed of a strange type of metal. it grows and breathes like a living thing, slowly changing shapes like a sheath of coral. it is able to hydrodynamically filter water through itself, which allows phi to swim very deftly and breathe underwater. this water can also be expelled from the pores of the material at massive speeds, making his artificial half essentially operable as a weapon. because of all of this, phi feels at home in the water, and is regarded as a very talented athlete and explorer. he doesn't care much for using these skills in the way that his peers might want him to, though. he's pretty ambivalent about the practical uses of his physical composition and would kind of just rather chill out.

phi is relatively quiet and unmotivated, preferring relaxation and absentminded drifting through life as opposed to skippers intense aspirations. he's inquisitive, and likes to enjoy the little things about life -- he's slowly learning about what it means to be alive day by day, and trying to casually appreciate those things without pushing himself too hard. however, he's very submissive, and tends to go along with whatever he's urged to do by those around him. he hates his timidness, and wants to have more agency, but he can't seem to will himself to stand up to those who push him around. he doesn't feel particularly listened to or valued in most situations, and though his agreeability grants him many acquaintences, he's only really comfortable around skipper, who he considers his one true friend, the only person who values him as a person and not as an asset.

he doesn't have many hobbies, but he likes to collect small trinkets, listen to music, draw, and try new foods. he has a unique appreciation for his own exitence because of how recently he gained consciousness, so his biggest hobby could be described as "just living, really." he joined the adventure guild with skipper for lack of anything better to do. skipper really wants to find out where phi came from, but he doesn't really care about that. he's really just trying to enjoy his day to day life.

somewhat against the will, because of his fondness for his best friend, phi is dragged into some precarious situations in the pursuit of adventure. even though he doesn't really care for exploring much himself, he does his best to be a good sidekick!
