Zoya Uteno (ゾヤ 宇土なし, Zoyah Utenoh) is a fanon character inspired by the Hunter x Hunter manga/anime series. She is a Contract Hunter from a highly regarded family line of hunters. She is a recurring character with the purpose to serve as a sincere and prospective window for the times that the protagonist is troubled or trapped by their own ideologies.
Appearance
Zoya has long periwinkle-like blue hair that ends approximately at her waist, with heavy bangs swept to the left of her face. It is ornamented with four hair pieces that completes her loose side ponytail, tied three times. Each ornament has an asymmetrical "X" accompanied by four green lines. Her eyes are rounded and onyx. In spite of their dark color, many of her emotions can be expressed through its varied intensities. Zoya is slightly tall for her age, but still maintains a common lean body type shared with other girls her age. Before her experience and training as a Hunter, she was significantly more petite than her current form. As the series progresses, Zoya's skills evidently improves but her body does not (or does very little/insignificantly). Zoya wears a white sleeveless leotard with a kimono-like neckline and black high-waisted pumpkin bloomer shorts. Along her shorts waistline are four olive tool cases. Zoya wears steel heeled shoes with thigh high socks that are half sheer, half solid. She often wears black arm warmers both casually and formally.

Zoya is overall a very sincere individual. She is very caring for those precious to her and is openly friendly to those she meets. She is driven by her goal to attain the power to protect her immediate family and the famous creed of Hunters, which has attracted many members of the Association. For her age, Zoya has proven to be very wise and thoughtful both towards others and with her actions. It is out of habit that she voices/expresses her good intentions and true feelings to others. Her kind attitude has resulted in charismatic qualities. However, she is still a child that at times cannot overcome guilty pleasures, outbursts, and moments of immaturity. While she makes effort to care for others she forgets herself, and while she is generally pleasant, she can be blatant and curt.

- The name "Zoya" translates to "Life" in Russian, and "Uteno" is a play on the Japanese word for "sound"
- Zoya's Nen Sound Consequence tiers are all syllables of her younger siblings' names.
- Zoya regularly 'meditates' to train her ears and hearing everyday.
- Zoya is the oldest of all her siblings. She yearns for an older sibling and finds a similar connection with her few friends that are older than her.

History
Zoya was born into a family of Hunters. The occupation has been taken up by at least eighty percent of her entire family, resulting in widely accepted traditions such as preemptive training for all members starting at ten years old and limited, or coined by the family, specialized education. Zoya's immediate family had been some what of an exception considering her father had opposite views expressed in Zoya's early childhood. However, Zoya's father was missing in action one day and was not there to halt the process of pressure she received from the family to become a hunter…….
Pre-canon
Quiche, Zoya's mother, is a single star crime hunter who has heavily enforced tradition upon Zoya and her siblings. So much that Zoya and her younger brother Sora, were forced to take the hunter exam at the ages of 12 and 10, resulting in failure.
Even though Sora was two years younger than Zoya, he was ahead of his time and actually wanted to become a Hunter in contrast to Zoya. He was adamant about helping others through the Association and showed talent towards his goal. But his good nature resulted in his death, courtesy of an ambush in search of their mother Quiche.
Emotionally torn down, Zoya was welcomed by the lack of remorse from her mother, who did not take her own son's death into question of the family's tradition. When this arose, Zoya seemed to be the only one outraged, and vowed to disassociate herself and other siblings from their mother.
"What a rash request from a radical girl. You may demand all you wish, but there is no legal way from you to separate from your dear mother, Zoya."
This was the response Zoya received from her mother. Current to the timeline, Zoya has had no choice but to cooperate with her mother and family traditions. But there is one deal, one that keeps the young hunter going on:
"Perhaps if you do everything I say, I will make you the last Hunter of this family. If you cooperate with my wishes, I will not touch Yachiome nor Lue...And perhaps even consider them, for a price."
Zoya currently is working as a contract hunter and saving money to buy the custody rights of her remaining 2 siblings. Since she is still a child herself, she aims to have completed all preparations (money, shelter, and status) in a timely manner for when she turns 18. At that transition to adulthood, she will be most able to seize her siblings from her nefarious mother.
Plot & Arc Involvement
285th Hunter Exam- Zoya attempts and fails the exam at age 12.
286th Hunter Exam- Zoya attempts the Hunter Exam again at 13, and passes. Along the way Zoya makes her first interaction with Hisoka. Upon passing her exam and obtaining her license, Zoya officially establishes her mission against her retainer, also known as Quiche (Zoya’s Mother)
287th Hunter Exam- Shadowing Satoz b/c she’s interested in becoming an Official Examinee in the future. She’s hired to pretend to take the exam and meets the 4 mains along the way. Tells Gon,Kura, and Leo her secret at the end of the exam. Zoya retires from her role after the end of Phase 2, the main 4 believe she failed at some point along the way. Zoya congratulates Leorio, Gon, and Kurapika after they pass their exam, and reveals that she is already a Hunter.
Zoldyck Family Arc- not involved
Heavens Arena Arc- Zoya is mentioned by Gon in the beginning of this arc. During this arc, Zoya was contracted to check up on the nen progress of each passed examinee of the 287th Hunter Exam by visiting each of their nen teachers. In order, Zoya visits Kurapika’s, Leorio’s and Pokkle’s nen teachers in March through May. Then, Zoya goes to Heaven’s Arena in the beginning of July. Just in time to cross paths with Killua, whom she does not interact with because here Zoya meets with Wing to discuss Gon’s nen development. Lastly, Zoya goes to Nagao Village in mid August. Under arrangement with Netero, Zoya enters the hidden ninja village to track the development of Kasumi’s nen.
Netero knew that Zoya would have trouble locating Kasumi, so ahead of time he contacted Kasumi’s grandmother and Village Elder. Ultimately a member of the Nagao clan escorts Zoya into their village. This is when Zoya and Kasumi officially meet.
Hunter Legacy Arc- After Gon and Killua leave Whale Island, they travel towards Yorknew City. Midway traveling by train, Killua and Gon bump into Zoya (yet again). On this short journey together, Zoya shares her history and experience with Killua and Gon. Zoya also trains with them and their newly awakened nen. To their surprise, Zoya easily combats them by a difference in experience.
Yorknew Arc- Is on a delivery mission with other contract hunters to deliver high profile goods for the auction. Her team gets caught up and twisted with the Kurapika, Killua, Leorio, and Gon’s shenanigans but not too much. Prior to this, this is where Zoya officially meets Seren and Kasumi.
Greed Island- not involved but bumps into Killua on his way from his retake of the Hunter Exam. She gives him an unexpected White Day gift, a nod to her hidden feelings for the white haired boy.
The Nagao Clan Arc- An old enemy of the Nagao clan returns and kidnaps Chizue Nagao, Kasumi’s grandmother, to find out the secrets of the sacred stone located in their village. Unable to defeat Goro on her own, Kasumi requests help from Zoya, Leorio, and Seren.
Chimera Ant- After returning home from a series of contracts, Zoya taken much of this arc to spend time at home. Because her home is generally hostile, Zoya’s spirit diminishes over time as her feud with her retainer becomes seemingly unfavorable. Eventually Zoya is added to a part of a NGL Recon Team sent by the Association before Netero got involved. It pained Zoya to not be able to make contact with the friends she discovered were there, in danger..
Chairman Election Arc- Involved but not with the boys directly. Zoya is present when Gon gets healed in his tent.
Dark Continent/Succession- uninvolved
Seren Llachar
[ Close Friend, Sister Figure ] Officially meeting in Yorknew City, Seren and Zoya almost immediately clicked. They share an optimism and love of clothes, which are only the small reasons why Zoya sees Seren as her big sister figure. Once they met, they have sought out each other’s help time and time again, and with that their bond is one of the strongest of Zoya’s.
(To Seren) "To be honest...the last thing I want is a mother figure..can't you...you be my big sister instead?!"
Kasumi Nagao
[ Close Friend, Sister Figure ] Though they met during the Heaven’s Arena arc, Kasumi and Zoya had gotten to know each other best after the Yorknew City Arc. Though Kasumi is not the type to show her emotions at all, that did not stop Zoya from bonding with her just as much as she has bonded to Seren. As a frequent group, Kasumi and Zoya have built a strong relationship after Zoya lulled Kasumi to sleep during one of Kasumi’s lowest points.
(To Kasumi) "We’re here for you, Kasumi-san. You may not believe it but we’re not going anywhere.."
Killua Zoldyck
[ Friend, Interest ] Something about Killua.
(To Killua) "Do you really think that killing the enemy is the only way to protect someone precious to you?"
Gon Freecss
[ Close Friend ] Gon and Zoya meet in the 287th Hunter Exam. Their friendly and upbeat attitudes truly help them click quickly, even in the “hectic” exam environment. Gon was quick to attach to Zoya and claim her as a friend, and the feeling was mutual for Zoya since there were not many Hunters around her age. Though Zoya was unable to aid Gon find Killua, she was delighted to check on their nen progress at Heaven’s Arena and later challenge them on what they learned. Down the line Zoya and Gon maintain their friendship by catching up everytime they cross paths.
(To Gon) "Tell me all about it!"
Leorio Paradinight
[ Friend ] Leorio and Zoya briefly meet during the 287th Hunter Exam. She had him easily fooled and this was a mind-boggle for Leorio. He was quick to get over it and welcomed Zoya's friendship. Ironically, Zoya and Leorio share a motivation of making money, even though one is more vain than the other. Later on, Leorio and Zoya meet again when Kasumi needed them most. When called on together, Leorio and Zoya found mutual respect for each other as they wasted no time making sure Kasumi was okay. This spark occurs again later in the Chairman Election Arc with Gon.
(To Leorio) "You...You SOLD your Hunter’s License?!"
Kurapika Kurta
[ Friend ] Kurapika and Zoya meet at the 287th Hunter Exam. Along with Gon and Leorio, Kurpika joins in in getting acquainted with Zoya and also forms a small friendship. Even though Zoya peeped in on Kurapika’s nen progress, she doesn’t meet Kurapika again until she goes to Yorknew city, where she finds a much different Kurapika. This honestly deters Zoya from interacting with him more. All other information on Kurapika comes mostly from Seren.
(About Kurapika & Seren) "I worry if Kurapika is worth the pursuit.”
Lue Uteno
[ Little Brother ] Lue is Zoya’s second brother. He is an energetic and rebellious troublemaker, but will always listen to his eldest sister. He admires Zoya and wants to become a hunter also, to Zoya’s dismay. She treats him like ‘the man of the house’ when she’s away.
(To Lue) "Go easy on Killua-kun, he’s one of the good guys and a lot like you!”
Yachiome Uteno
[ Little Sister ] Yachiome is Zoya’s youngest sibling and sister. Yachiome and Zoya are as close as sisters can get. She was too young to grieve over Sora’s death, but is always thoughtful when it comes to Lue and Zoya. Zoya writes to Yachiome the most and always brings back trinkets and clothes for her younger sister.
(To Yachiome) "I loved your last letter to me, Yachi!”
Sora Uteno
[ Little Brother, Deceased ] Sora is Zoya’s first brother. As the older of the four children, they engaged into pre-hunter training when they were younger. Sora was always optimistic, happy, forthright, and talented. Zoya wanted to be just like him and both adored and admired him. They were very close in spite of their age difference, until Sora passed away in an enemy raid.
(To Sora) "I don’t know if I can do this Sora, I-I’m not as capable as you..”
Quiche Uteno
[ Retainer, Mother ] Quiche is Zoya’s mother, who is the current head of the Uteno family of hunters. Considering the large percentage of family members who are Hunters, Quiche has obtained quite the group of loyalty. The woman has warped family tradition and has maintained it to her liking since Zoya was born. Zoya and her mother do not get along nor see eye to eye. But all means necessary does Zoya try to keep her younger siblings away from the influence of their unfit mother.
(To Quiche) "Don’t you dare speak about them like that! It’s only a matter of time, I’ll show you!”

Other General Abilities
Though her years of training merely started from age ten in comparison to child prodigies Killua and Gon, Zoya has proved to have reaped many skills from her years of training with her family and on her own as a Hunter.
Her training allowed her to hone in on her natural latent abilities, that are listed but are not limited to:
Enhanced Agility: Zoya is quite nimble thanks to her small size. She naturally has quick reflexes that were initially driven by instinct but were honed through a few years of experience and training. She may not be the fastest in combat, though she can still hold her own against an opponent especially in combination with her Nen abilities.
Rhythmic Dodging: Zoya was taught to dodge in a dance like manner that proves efficient in close combat.
Precision: Zoya is overall precise in her attacks and strikes, always aiming for a minimal battle. After training she has precise control over her bodily movements.
Advanced Mental Fortitude: For a child her age, Zoya has an immense amount of mental strength in the face of danger and fear. It is not evident in her history as to why her composure is so fortified and controlled, but it is notable that this skill is major component to her success when faced with others exponentially stronger than herself.
Preternatural Perception: Though at its height with the use of Nen, Zoya has exceptional perception of her immediate surroundings and of others' feelings. This skill is at it's maximum potential when Zoya is stationary, resulting in an incredible ability to dodge/instantly detect incoming attacks. Her keen perception also allows her to accurately react to how others are feeling.
Critical Analysis: Zoya, fully aware of the limitations of her physique and Nen abilities, also replies on her intellect and ability to think critically and creatively to plan strategic advances in her favor using all levels of knowledge akin to her. This skill is majorly applied in pre-combat rather than in the heat of combat.
Blind Combat: In more dire times, and when the situation calls for it, Zoya can temporarily sacrifice her vision to optimize her hearing and/or nen abilities. This trade off puts her at a major disadvantage but fuels her nen exponentially.
