Tova Nike

"Whoever said money can't solve your problems must not have had enough money to solve them. It doesn’t matter what we want. Once we get it, we move on to something else. Greed is a never ending transaction. That's how I - and the world -  function. Hence why money is essential."

Tova Nike (ナイキ トバ , Toba Naiki) is the only child of Yorka and Bluejay Nike and a survivor of the Laskan Massacre. She is the eventual friend and love interest of Killua Zoldyck and is currently traveling with him and Alluka Zoldyck.

Tova first appears right at the end of the 13th Hunter Chairman Election Arc where she begins traveling with the pair of Zoldycks. While not initially seen in the end credits of the 2011 animation adaptation, Tova is there while both Killua and Alluka are seen looking out the window.

Appearance

tova_cv_by_libertyligma_de95jse-pre.jpg?Tova is said to look the spitting image of her mother with the eager and resourcefulness of her father. Her mother was considered very attractive while her father's intelligence and intuition were well known. A possible reason Tova grows out her hair is to share a likeness with her mother, who's hair dropped to her ankles. Fair-skinned like her parents, Tova - like most Laskans - burns quite easily. While Laska isn't very far north and is its own island, the country receives its fair share of colder climates, thus Tova readily enjoying the fall and winter seasons.

Of average height for her age, Tova is considered healthy. She has the right proportions and has continued to properly mature despite being on her own for the majority of her life. her face is a lot rounder as a child and she has noticably big cheeks. This later changes as her face smooths out and she loses the child fat from her face. Tova has long, straight peanut brown hair that goes down to her backside, bangs parted in the middle revealing parts of a pale forehead. She has a peachy complexion, which is common in where she's from.

In Tova's debut, she is seen wearing a coral and yellow outfit with chunky brown boots and a unique hair accessory. Her top is strapless and begins just above her chest and ending in 4 flared pieces. She has a thick brown belt that keeps her top snug and allows it to be form fitting. Her skirt is the same color as her top, ruffled in two layers with white lace underneath. She wears a pair of matching off white gloves that fan out in folds above her wrist. A matching white ribbon is wrapped around her neck and tied in a knot against her clavicle. Tova's hair accessory is a clip with a large coral feather sticking out along with a tuft of white fluff and two wires with a pair of beads at the tips.

Her most defining trait, though, is her eyes. Parents both bearing uniquely colored eyes, Tova's irises are the product of that mixing of colors. Like her parents and their fellow Laskan countrymen, Tova's eyes are coveted and absolutely stunning, mirroring that of a rare jewel. It's easy to tell Laskan heritage with the color of their eyes.During the majority of her life outside of Laska, Tova uses contacts to conceal her eyes as a precautionary measure. Her contacts are a basic hazel-chestnut color, vivid but also ordinary.

Right before the 3 year timeskip, Tova cuts her hair into a bob hairstyle in preparation of starting anew.

After the 3 year timeskip, Tova returns with her hair chest length. She is significantly taller yet retains a thin physique highlighted by her long, thin legs. Her eyes are much more slanted and shapely as opposed to her much larger and wider pair as a child. She is seen wearing a pale pink dress with a white ascot around her neck.In her 1999 anime appearance, Tova's hair is a bright blonde while her eyes are more pink than purple/magenta. Her outfit is the same style but has unsaturated blues and reds as opposed to the bright corals and yellows in her current appearance.

Personality

At first glance, Tova seems to be a character who wears her emotions on her sleeves and put others before herself. This has been shown quickly to be false, a facade put forth in order to attribute to selfish desire. In actuality, Tova simply speaks to others with what she feels they would like to hear, and in that window of vulnerability and trust take what she can for herself. The manipulation she is able to use while unphased of possible harm or moral dissonance is something to be  feared, as she allows her avarice to be the driving force of her moral ambiguity. Despite this, her greed is not unfounded and revolves back to her strict beliefs of survival and the necessities required. In her  mind, survival is key regardless of who it effects or what it takes to  achieve this.

Tova's concept of survival  is important in her character, as this is fueled by vengeful tunnel vision. She has no future plans and is unable to base personal goals and  achievements above what she feels is her duty. As a survivor of a tragic home country massacre, Tova feels a severe sense of duty to right wrongs by finding whoever placed the hit on her countrymen and kill them herself. This is one of the reasons Tova completely shuts out those around her and the possibility of leaning on others for guidance and help. While not particularly interested in honing her physical prowess, Tova still believes she is capable of achieving her goal and killing someone which can highlight her uncharacteristic irrationality regarding the subject as a whole and the means of getting there. Her lack of interest in the future after achieving this goal can also mean she may not expect to live that long and can suggest her acceptance of the notion of death.

As a result of losing everything at such a  young age, Tova leaves to travel the world on her own. This is a perilous task for such a young and unequipped child and allows her to realize the importance of survival and money. As money and affordability become an important factor in this survival, Tova eventually develops a materialistic streak which manifests in the form of stealing wallets for food and scamming civilians to pay for board. Despite initially only focusing on the necessities, Tova's calloused confidence in what she  did for a living allowed her the luxury of affording more expensive and unnecessary things such as new, flashy clothes and dining in elegance. This ultimately frivolous lifestyle sometimes gets the better of her as  she finds herself broke on many occasions, yet her confidence allows her to quickly pick up where she left off. Her belief that all of this would justified once she achieved her goal and took her revenge also plays an important role in the life she leads and the values she lives by.

While her manipulation is a common source of income and survival, a defining characteristic of hers is an incredible sense of self worth and confidence. Tova carries herself with a strong level of arrogance and has little fear she cannot accomplish what she needs to. This prideful demeanor is also seen in her own self image, as Tova believes she is incredibly beautiful and alluring - which has been seen to be true but much more inflated in her own mind. This ballooned self worth is actually a mask hiding a powerfully impactful superiority complex. As a defense mechanism to her own inferiority and  ordinariness from her past, Tova overstates her own capabilities in hopes of compensating for what she feels she likes and illogically hoping to believe these lies herself. As a child, the competitiveness of Tova's culture did a number on her confidence and daily activities, usually preferring to stay inside and study instead of interact with children her age in order to stay ahead academically. While clearly of  above intelligence and a front runner academically, Tova still felt she wasn't good enough to be the progeny of such a successful parentage. She eventually is able to come to terms with the fact that she will never be her parents and that family itself should not define the individual, something expressed early on when finding out about Killua's family ties.

Another important characteristic of  Tova's is her natural intelligence. Coming from a country heralded for  their above average intelligence and technological and scientific savvy, Tova was a very academically successful child. This intellect allows Tova to not only succeed in an educational background, but also allows her to successfully adapt to situations and perceive different individuals and how to properly communicate with them. On top of this, Tova is considered an incredible strategist, often times able to think far in advance and calculate several different scenarios and outcomes at the same time in order to achieve a desired result. This intelligence is very important to her, as she prefers to use it over any physicality. She would even go so far as to use her perceptive and suave nature in a battle if she could foresee victory. Tova believes knowledge is one of the most integral parts of an individual and speaks volumes to who they are and what they are worth.

Tova's intelligence and ability to manipulate the situation allows for her to  be an almost perfect liar and administer a silver tongue against almost  anyone. Using her ability to read the room, Tova can confidently say what she needs to in order to get what she needs. Confident in this method, Tova would also rather use her words over brawn any day. Her dishonesty is what often defines her, which can also fall back to her superiority complex and a distaste in showing any form of vulnerability. She has a hard time opening up to those around her, as she has no real interest in forming relationships in the first place. Her tunnel vision of revenge prevents her from seeing any value in forming said relationships or exhibiting any compassion, sympathy, or commitment.

Underneath a seemingly unshakeable and cocky exterior, Tova has been seen to be incredibly stubborn and even hotheaded if a rise is gotten out of her. This is usually done by those who either don't give her what she wants or expects or those who fight back with her. These people also tend to share similar personality traits with her including an undeniable sense  of wit and some sort of higher intelligence. This can prove detrimental in regards to her Nen, which is fueled by her emotions and required a maintained state of mind. Her confidence in masking these emotions so  well allows her to be able to put such a restriction on her Nen that could potentially backfire. Regardless, Tova can often times be seen arguing or bickering with people like Killua Zoldyck who are able to successfully combat any of her wiles or smooth words and challenge her superiority and self proclaimed authority. Yet her careful consideration of keeping her emotions in check creates a mysterious view of her from others.

Once exposed to the few people who have impacted her, Tova is shown to indulge in a strong sense of loyalty to where she'd stake her life on protecting them. Her maternal instincts tend to show themselves around those she admittedly cares deeply for and eventually is able to express these more vulnerable and raw emotions effectively and confidently around them. She truly does care for people and can show kindness, it just requires a bit of wall breaking and a close bond. This is especially seen once she sees the true value in working with others and allowing people in to who she really is. This is also seen clearer once Tova realizes her duty is not vengeful, but informational as she needs to focus on keeping and spreading her culture as opposed to allowing rage and hate to take over and burn what's left of it. Once this intense focus is diminished, Tova is finally able to successfully interact with others and experiment in her own individuality. This takes the form of newly established goals and desires that don't involve purely surviving as a means to an end.

Tova is also still very young and does exhibit childlike and age appropriate interests, such as maintaining her appearance and focusing on silly or inconsequential things. She enjoys shopping in her free time - which supports her materialistic habits, and also indulges in books when she can to broaden her already expanded knowledge and intellect. She also shows characteristics of an only child such as being somewhat spoiled and longing for siblings, the latter is seen in her interactions with Alluka Zoldyck. A running gag for Tova relates to her physique, which is incredibly underdeveloped considering her pubescence. This insecurity is something people like Killua tend to antagonize over and unfortunately doesn't change much into adulthood.

Background

In the eastern parts of Yorbia on a Balsa Island north of the Mitene Union sits a very science-savvy country called Laska. Laska is small, only consisting of one major city and a slew of suburban and rural housing with a population size of around 850. Despite its size, Laska is well known for its scientific and technological advancements,  which were high in demand by most of the functioning world. Most Laskans have an IQ of over 110, 40% of the population carrying between 130-140. Tova was a bright, 6-year-old Laskan youth and the daughter of two renowned scientists. Before the Laskan Massacre, Tova was one of the many groomed to become a future researcher and developer. When the tragedy hit, Tova spent several days alone at home awaiting her parents' return. When she cried all her tears and lost all hope, Tova decided she had to leave. Traveling to one of the country's few main harbors, Tova meets with a lady and her two children. They decide to share a boat that has been power by postmortem Nen in order to get to the mainland of Yorbia. The trip took a few days, causing the group to spend the last of their already scant rations.

Once making it to a local town dock, Tova realizes the rest of her company is unresponsive. Taking the scene in, Tova realizes that she had been living too cushy of a lifestyle and that now it survived or die. Rather than checking on the family, Tova leaves the boat and goes off on her own.In a year's time, Tova meets a wandering vagabond in the woods somewhere in Yorbia. He introduces himself as Nadja and after some debating, decides to take Tova on as a student of Nen and self-defense. The average Laskan does not know Nen, so this did intrigue Tova more so. She spends 3 years under his tutelage, mastering the basics of Nen and learning ways to defend herself. While Nadja didn't agree with a lot of  Tova's developed survivalist morals, he did keep her close and allow her to do what she needed to to survive. He knew it was a cruel world and they wouldn't be together forever, not by his choice but because Tova was the type to not be tied down.

Tova was never involved with the canon arcs from the 287th Hunter Exam arc to the Election Arc and has little to no knowledge of the goings-on. She only ever knows bits and pieces from what Killua tells her. Tova eventually moved on from Nadja, spending the next couple years stealing, swindling, and traveling. At almost 13, Tova visits a little mountain town below a World Tree in hopes of scamming tourists. There, in an attempt to pry food from a shop owner, she is approached by a curious Alluka Zoldyck.

Laskan Massacre

Gloss Industries, a competing technological multi-billion dollar business,  eventually found enough reason to pay a hit on the country - mainly it's Triplet Towers which held most of its success and prototypes. In the ensuing massacre, about 96.7% of Laska's population was killed off. In an effort to cover up the incident, Gloss and the media arranged a deal that the booming industry bought out Laska's economy and imported it to another location. Another cover-up was that an unnamed tragedy (theorized as either a plague or gas) killed off the majority of the population. Most of the public bought it, as not much video footage was shown of the torn country. Hunters, on the other hand, had knowledge due to their status and information accessibility.

Plot

Post-Canon

Danza City Arc:

Tova is at the base of one of the world's World Trees, attempting to scam unknowing tourists for money and supplies for her next trip out. In an attempt to swindle some extra snacks from a street shop owner, Tova is approached by Alluka Zoldyck, who is infatuated with her feathered hair accessory.  While Tova is unsure of the situation, she puts on a smile and talks to the child. They are quickly met with Killua Zoldyck, who tries to usher his younger sibling away, cautious of strangers. Alluka remains resilient and continues to talk to Tova, who is now enjoying seeing the dynamic between the siblings (as she lacks that). When Alluka lets slip that Killua is a Pro Hunter, Tova decides to latch onto the two in any way possible, as Killua has access to things like Q and Hunter's Tavern.  He also has a lot of money under his license. Tova makes an excuse that she'd help Alluka get lots of cute clothes and hair clips and that she'd take them to where she got hers. Killua rejects the idea but has little choice when Alluka stubbornly begs to allow Tova into their little group.

The group of three leaves the tourist town and heads north towards the United States of Saherta. Tova and Alluka seemingly bond almost instantly, much to Killua's annoyance, and Tova realizes her relationship with Killua would be bitter at best. Heading into Danza City, Tova attempts several times to swipe Killua's license from him, only succeeding on her first and second try. The trio travel to a large park area in Danza where they unintentionally run into Knuckle Bine, Shoot McMahon, and Zizany Spins. The group settles down on a blanket Knuckle brought and Killua introduces Tova and Alluka. Killua, Knuckle, and Shoot reminisce while Zizany humors Alluka. Tova gets hold of Knuckle's Hunter License and slips away, hoping to get to a  library or somewhere with computer access. She rather quickly finds the  Danza Public Library and takes a computer all the way in the back. She accesses Hunter's Tavern and goes through information on the Laskan Massacre, finding out that the country had been a hired hit, but unsure of who the hit men were or the mastermind behind it. Meanwhile, Killua, Knuckle, and Shoot spread out around the city in search of Tova. Shoot eventually finds her but decides to observe and see what she's doing and wonders over her interest in the massacre. He eventually reveals himself and Tova willingly leaves as she cannot find any other information.

They all rent out a single floor space for the night. Tova, Alluka, and Ziz go to bed while Shoot explains to a distrusting Killua and Knuckle about what Tova was doing and the three try to theorize why she went to such lengths to look for information. The next morning, Knuckle and co. say goodbye and depart Danza. Killua continues to suspect Tova and distrust her motives. While exploring the forest outskirts of the city, Tova and Killua eventually lose track of Alluka. As the two spend the day worriedly searching for her, Killua is able to sense Nanika's Nen and leads Tova. He frustratingly explains to Tova about Alluka's Nen abilities and her relationship with their family, thus revealing his own feelings about his home. When they find Alluka, she is sitting alone in a field staring out into the forest. Tova rushes towards her, finally meeting Nanika face to face. The former introduces herself with a big smile and hugs the latter, not phased by her transformation. Tova genuinely begins to feel a bond and compassion for Alluka, allowing her to welcome Nanika into her life without hesitation. Killua stands further away, taking in the scene. Killua realizes not everyone feels the same about Alluka as his family does. He also realizes he doesn't know as much about Tova as he initially thought, letting his guard down for a moment.

The trio stays in the same rented home again with Tova tucking Alluka in for bed. She and Killua have a brief conversation about Alluka and how she'd protect her if what he said about his family was true. While  Killua couldn't believe someone of Tova's stature could do such a thing, he didn't question her resolve. In the morning, Killua decides to visit a gym he passed by a few days earlier, inadvertently leaving Tova alone with Alluka. As he's lifting weights, he realizes he left Alluka alone with a stranger he met just over a month ago and comes to a rough conclusion that he trusts Tova enough to stay with his sister.

They stay in Danza for over two months with Killua opening up to Tova about Gon, Kurapika, Leorio, and the events of the past year bit by bit. She learns more about Killua and Knuckle/Shoot's relationship from their time in NGL and East Gorteau, taking mental notes of how close they were to Laska's remains.

Colosseum Arc:

While Killua is at the Danza Gym, he overhears talk of a massive fighting tournament being held in a city not too far. He immediately thinks -  especially after his reunion with Knuckle and Shoot - that Gon or possibly Leorio might be there and considers going himself. When he gets back, Tova and Alluka are playing. Killua catches Tova teaching  Alluka about stories and fairy tales the former grew up on. When Alluka goes to bed, Killua chastises Tova for teaching Alluka about imaginary things to which Tova dismisses. He then brings up what he heard at the gym, to which Tova is uninterested until Killua mentions the prize money. She quickly agrees, thrilled by the possibility of making money.  They start out the day after, leaving Danza City behind. They spend a  few days riding a train and walking with Tova fantasizing about what she'd do with the prize money and Killua longing to see his friends. The fighting tournament was built and sponsored by the international technology company of Gloss Industries and was rumored to have as much notoriety and potential as Heaven's Arena. It was built like an old  Colosseum with a square ring in the center and thousands of seats in the stands. Killua is disappointed to find that Gon nor anyone else he knows is there but still decides to enter for the practice. Upon entry, Killua also received a hotel room and a number. Tova also enters, which baffles Killua and causes him to consider how in fact she'd even progress.----

Three Year Timeskip:

Tova eventually decides to join a group of Hunters to do cultural and environmental work on the now ruined Laska continent. She believes it's her duty to help preserve the Laskan culture despite the country being deserted and torn. Tova takes a boat out with Rhea, planning to spend the next few years together working in Laska. Her plan is to work as an assistant, historian, and cultural informant among a group of Anthropology Hunters in order to keep the Laskan culture alive and report accurate information back to the Hunter Association. The process had a tentative timeline of 2-3 years, which by then Tova has the option of returning to her friends. This experience forces her to realize that she could have been doing something to better her country rather than focus solely on revenge - a feat she narrow-mindedly assumed would be the best thing for her and her fallen countrymen.

Equipment

  • Empty Wallet - A reminder of her money problems.

  • "Sweet Sugar Pink" Pocket Knife - A cotton candy pink switchblade kept in the inside of her right boot, used primarily as a self-defense item.

  • Anzac/Chestnut Contacts - Used for a majority of her time in Yorbia, covering her genetic irises completely.

  • Standard Cell phone - Eventually is bought a cell phone by Killua to keep in touch before they split up. She doesn't use it often and tends to neglect it or forget she has it. It's a very basic cell phone with call and text functions but nothing more - no touchscreen or smartphone capabilities

Nen: Tova is a Transmuter, changing the structure of her Nen into a copied gasoline-like state that lights when exposed to oxygen. Her Nen has a  thicker layer to it, allowing her to control the amount and ferocity of her flames. She is able to extend her Nen away from her body in fiery long-range attacks. Although her Nen is not actual gasoline but a mimicked consistency, Tova's fires can spread onto normal flammable objects such as wood, foliage, and clothes. While oxygen is not flammable, Tova's Nen mimics the consistency of a fueled incipient fire, which once mixed with an oxidizer such as oxygen, causes flames. She trained primarily to become comfortable within different levels of heat, thus her body temperature is relatively warmer than most to the touch.

Tova has an emotional limitation on her Nen in that if she loses control of her emotions, her fire-based Nen begins to burn her physically. Being able to control and maintain her state of mind while using her Nen allows her flames to be more powerful and for her to have access to stronger attacks while also not tempting her weaker Ten. Her emotions function as heat that allows her flames to spark and could potentially cause her flames to grow at a rapid pace and become a fully developed fire too quickly. Her limitation was never given a punishment, henceforth the only real risk is her losing the ability to use Nen. Tova has only once broken her limitation once. She's almost done so on 2 other separate occasions. Tova's Nen grows in power as she demonstrates stronger emotions.

Tova has both a natural and difficult time learning the Four Fundamentals. It takes her some time when it comes to things like Ten and Ren. Her Ten is noticeably weaker, which prevents a good defense against emotional attacks. Thus, her condition is something she has to keep in mind. When she struggled with starting her basics, Tova tended to get visibly frustrated at her inability. Her talent in intellect gives her high expectations for her learning Nen. She begins to ease out, though, coming to the conclusion that as long as she used her mind and knowledge, she'd be talented enough and stable enough to maintain her composure.

Tova has a strong In ability, usually using it to hide the presence of her Nen as opposed to her physical being. Because of her less-than-threatening appearance, most don't feel the need to use Gyo on her, hence why she can get away with using In so often. She tends to activate it unconsciously after being so used to it. Both Bisky and Killua comment on her In. She is primarily seen using Transmuter abilities, as her desire to become stronger and more diverse is low compared to other characters. Bisky especially comments on how Tova should focus more on her Ten, one of the main things she needed to work on regardless of wanting to become stronger or not. This is something that she is chastised for being so careless with and after her time skip, is forced to improve on by Bisky through meditation sessions.

In the grand scheme of things, Tova's Nen has the consistency of gasoline. When her Nen is activated, it creates an incipient fire. A fire itself needs at least 16% oxygen to start, in which our air provides around 21% and the rest is nitrogen. An incipient fire requires oxygen, heat, and a fuel source combine and has a chemical reaction resulting in a fire. The heat is produced from Tova's Nen and emotional stability. The oxygen, which is composed of bits of very old oxidized atoms and recycled oxygen atoms, and the fuel source (gasoline) is present. The next stage is the growth stage, which is where the structures fire load and oxygen are used as fuel for the fire. This is what Tova usually uses when fighting, a growing fire. As opposed to an incipient fire as to say light a campfire or the equivalent to a match starter or lighter. With her emotions providing heat, which is a limitation to her Nen, the heat of the flame itself keeps the fuel at the ignition temperature, so it continues to burn as long as there is fuel (her Nen) and oxygen around it.

Nen Type: Transmuter
Type: Transmuter                     Hot Hand(火災 (Fire hand card))
de98tpg-9cac8aee-bf8f-43fc-ac33-909175ceTranslated with the kanji for fire and a hand synonymous to a poker hand, this is Tova's primary offensive ability. Using Ko, Tova sends a  majority of her aura to her fists before producing a flame. She then proceeds to engage in closely combative attacks. This attack, much like the rest of her abilities, requires a stable emotional balance in order to maintain a safe heat. With too many emotions comes too much heat,  which could end up burning out her Nen and causing physical damage.
Type: Transmuter         Flamethrower(かえんほうしゃ (Flame Emission))

Tova shoots a strong blast of fire out, projecting from her person yet still remaining connected. Its heat and power intensify with growing emotions of anger, frustration, and fear. When shot from short distances, the fire is significantly more powerful. Shooting long-range forces the fire to stretch a longer distance, thereby decreasing its intensity to compensate for distance traveled. Similar to her other techniques, if her flames overpower her Nen, the latter could burnout and cause physical damage.
Type: Transmuter                         Eruption(ふんか (Eruption))

Using most of her power, Tova's whole body ignites into flames. This is also done with a boost in Ren, allowing her aura to explode from around her. This technique requires full concentration and peace of mind to balance a weaker Ten.
Type: Transmuter                   Halation(ハレーション (Halation))

Similar to "Hot Hand", Tova sends the majority of her aura to her hands -  specifically to her palms. She then emits a soft heat from either palm, flames taking on a swirling, circular appearance almost like a halo.  This technique is mostly used as a healing/therapeutic mechanism. Heat therapy works by improving circulation and blood flow to a particular area due to increased temperature. Increasing the temperature of the afflicted area even slightly can soothe discomfort and increase muscle flexibility. Heat can relax and soothe muscles, heal damaged tissue, and stimulate natural metabolic rates. This helps to quicken the healing rate.
