After the death of her parents and her two little sisters, Emma becomes a quiet woman. She can never really put their death behind herself and also has depressions because she’s not satisfied with herself and her life. While she critizises those who blindly follow rules and orders, living a life they don’t seem happy with, Emma can’t come to do other than exactly that. Since she doesn’t want to be a burden to their family, she decides to just go with the flow and put her dreams aside. However, she’s not very motivated and just does things if it‘s really needed. In comparison to the rest of her family, she’s quite pessimistic. Additionally, she’s not the most confident person and is quite shy, mostly because she never had many friends, since she always relied on her siblings and also her parents. Emma learns fast, no matter if the topic catches her interest or not. You could even say she’s the most intellegent of the family. Emma is very patient, but often doesn't understand other peoples' problems. She tends to feel "too sorry" for herself and doesn't take the worries and problems from others serious. However, she would never say this out loud. She spends very much of her freetime with reading. She loves to sink in all the fictional worlds she reads about and forgets about her daily life through that sometimes. Emma doesn't care for criticism. Not because she can't handle it, but because she isn't interested in improving herself in whatever. She actually knows about her flaws and weaknesses very well, but she doesn't have the interest and not the strength to change these things.

• ✧ Even though she’s in the military and knows that her long hair will be in the way, she can’t get to seperate from it, since she loves the memories of her mother braiding her hair almost every morning. So she decides to just wear her hair up if it’s needed to, but in her freetime she likes to wear it open
• ✧ She really enjoys playing card games since she most likely wins those and that pushes her confidence for at least a little while. She often asks Suvi to play with her, but Suvi tends to say no since she knows that she will probably lose against Emma. Emma’s favorite card game is skat, because she often played it with her brother Noah

Emma grew up in Trost, Wall Rose, together with her five siblings. Their parents owned a saddlery, were they made and sell a diversity of leather goods just like saddles, headgear, collars, but also bags and belts. Additionally their mother knitted and crocheted blankets. With all this, the family earned enough money to live a good life. The father tought his first-born, his only son Noah, in leatherworking when he turned 10. This became a tradition for the family. Everytime one of their children turned 10, the next oldest sibling would teach them in leatherworking. So, Emma was tought by Ronja, and Emma showed it to her sister Suvi.
Ever since Ronja started to help their parents in the saddlery, Suvi seemed to be super excited to learn how to do it, too. Emma couldn’t really understand this excitement. She had small interest in starting to act like an adult. However, when Emma was tought by Ronja she somehow managed to inspire Emma with her high motivation. So Emma got used to the work, even though it didn’t bring her as much joy as it seemingly brought her siblings. Emma also found it kind of annoying that their parents didn’t even let their children the opportunity to choose for themselves what they wanted to do, they didn’t have another choice then working in the saddlery as soon as they turned 10. Emma was annoyed of how her siblings blindly followed their parents „orders“, but she also was too lazy to „rebell“ against them. So she just acted like she was supposed to.
The day Ronja told her family she was going to join the military, because she wanted to be special and not just one of many, Emma began to absolutely admire her for her strength and her bravery to leave the family’s house, and she was surprised that Ronja saw all this similarly to herself. While everyone seemed to be disappointed in Ronja, it was this moment when Ronja became Emma’s idol. However, Emma still stayed with her family because she knew she was needed in the saddlery.
One day there’s a huge fire which destroyed their house and the saddlery, and also took almost all family members. The only survivors are Noah, Emma and Suvi. Emma is under total shock for quite a while. She never really wanted to become an adult, especially not in her quite young age, and she had a quite intense relationship with her parents. She was totally lost and didn’t know what to do at all. While they were allowed to stay at their father’s friends, family Kraemer, for some time, she was very thankful but also amazed that Noah immadiatly took responsibility for them and started to work in a bar to earn some money. Emma felt very useless and was kinda trapped in a hole for months. When she heard that Suvi was going to join the military, she was surprised and shocked. Emma didn’t know Suvi’s reasons for that, but Emma was impressed by how determined Suvi was, and that even her little sister had made actual plans for the future. Emma didn’t want to stay behind Suvi, so she spontaneously decided to follow Suvi’s example, since she didn’t had any other idea what to do with her future life. Additionally she would not just follow Suvi’s, but also Ronja’s example. Emma knew that Ronja had taken responsibilty for herself long time ago and was happy with that. Emma knew that she had to do that, too now. However, it hurted Emma very much to leave her brother Noah behind and to disappoint him so badly, since he had done so much for them. Nontheless Emma sticks with her plan and she and Suvi both join the 105th Training Corps. Emma doesn’t reach to join the Military Police afterwards, since she knows that she isn’t motivated enough, so she doesn’t even try to be better than anyone else.
Emma already knew that Suvi would follow Ronja and join the Survey Corps. Even though she's unsure about being seperated from her sisters and being on her own from now on, Emma's too scared to leave the walls, so she decides to join the Garrison.

After Ronja gets seriously injured during the mission to retrieve Wall Maria/Shiganshina ("Return to Shiganshina" Arc), Ronja and Noah finally get in touch again ever since their fight. They make up and all four siblings decide to support each other from now on, no matter what. Actually Noah tries to convince his sisters to leave the military to open a new saddlery and to live in peace (as long as possible) together as family, but after finding out the truth about the titans, Ronja and Suvi can’t let go.

As she planned from the beginning, Emma joins the Garrison after her graduation. However, not long after she realizes that being a soldier is not what she wants to do for the rest of her life. Emma feels very lonely in the Garrison and misses her family, so she finally decides to leave the military and support Noah from now on. She asks the Kraemers if it would be possible to stay with them again, and with no hesitation they welcome Emma back in the household. However, she does need to contribute some money to the household, so Emma starts working as a waitress at night, and in the day she helps in the household. Meanwhile Noah works at a cobbler down the street. Together Noah and Emma try to save up for building up a new saddlery one day.
Not long after Emma's back in the Kraemer's house, Noah and the Kraemers' daughter Sarah are getting engaged. It also doesn't take them long to get married and awaiting their first child, so that later on Emma also babysits her nephew Jakob, when his parents are not at home.

Canon Characters (Summary)

Emma is not too talkactive, but she is good in listening, even though she’s not the best at giving advice because she’s not too interested in giving her opinion to everything. Nontheless she keeps her mouth shut, so secrets are safe with her. Because of this it’s an open secret she happens to be everyone’s „agony aunt“, since many people want to vent and they admire that Emma most likely doesn’t say much to it. Emma doesn’t mind this role, even though she doesn’t really get why it happens to be certainly her that everyone trusts so much. However, besides that, she doesn’t really have friends, at least not good ones. There are some comrades from the 105th that she comes along with, but she’s most likely more than happy if Suvi is any near by. Since Suvi spends much of her time with the 104th cadets, Emma happens to join her to not be alone. From time to time Emma has some good talks with Armin, but other than that Emma most likely remains quiet among the older cadets.
