Every fairytale has always begun with the phrase; “once upon a time.” In this story however, Cecilia's birth was a chapter that should’ve never been written. Born as the illegitimate daughter of a powerful businessman, her delivery was a mistake that neither he nor his mistress desired. She stayed with her mother for the first few years of life, memories of her blurring with each passing season after it became quickly evident that having a child was something she just couldn’t handle. While her father’s side debated on what to do with her existence—worriedly fretting over the Vitalis family’s reputation—she entered the foster care system as a temporary solution.

During the rest of her childhood, she tried her best to adjust to her new living arrangements. Scared and unsure about her new circumstances, Cecilia found solace in reading a variety of myths and fairy tales. Physical possessions were items she hesitated to ask for—opting instead to be preoccupied by her imagination. She quickly grew mesmerized with the ideas of magic and true love—eventually choosing to go by her middle name, “Grace,” due to an off-handed comment about how princess-like it sounded.

When her adolescence began, Cecilia officially became a part of the Vitalis family. To diffuse public gossip from the seemingly abrupt adoption, she stayed with several distant relatives throughout her teenage years; relocating from place to place every so often. In regards to her mother, she cut ties with her father after being paid a hefty sum. With no consideration towards her only daughter, she disappeared permanently from their lives.

Politely keeping distance from her new family, Cecilia tried her best to exhibit independent and well-mannered behaviors. Perceptive of those around her, she understood that her company was an unwanted presence. Being in such an invidious environment translated awkwardly into her school life—making her feel out of place in comparison to her peers. It’d be a lie to say she didn’t feel just a tad bit envious observing how enamored everyone was with their loved ones.

Time passed, and Cecilia ultimately reached adulthood. Having spent her final years before independence with her immediate family, she was sent off on her way with promises of a comfortable career path in return for keeping herself out of trouble. Despite the time they spent together, she never did get the affection she yearned for. Still… she wanted to hold onto the flickering hope that she could be cherished as well one day… but perhaps she wasn’t the type befitting of something as grand as a happily ever after.
