Profile

Nyr is a mental creature built from "negative" human emotions such as raw ambition, hatred, rage, entitlement, scorn, and joy of violence. These creatures, part of a whole, are known as the Mara, born on the planet of Manussa in the Doctor Who multiverse.

His story is ancient and involves empires and conquests, but his recent history is more subdued. He became trapped in his current body after infiltrating the crew of a space freighter. The human crew was unprepared for a chance encounter with a few motes of space-borne psychic pollen, and the mental break that occurred allowed Nyr to slither in through the cracks and wreak havoc. Evacuation was the crew's solution, with the teenage girl Anna luring Nyr into her body and then making a brave gesture of self-sacrifice before he fully took hold. Somehow, the selfless iron resolve of this one young human trapped Nyr, leaving him unable to switch bodies. The ship now empty, with no lifepods remaining, Nyr faced a six year long isolation with nothing but the unresponsive Anna and the echoes of his own screams off the metal hull.

Mara are a gestalt entity, many beings as one, designed to touch and influence many minds. Isolated from any other being, Nyr has gotten a little... strange by Mara standards. He certainly wouldn't admit it, but he pathologically craves the company of others, the buzz of other minds around him. Occasionally, this need for companionship actually makes him approximate a good person. Occasionally.

About Nyr:

With the ego of a former ruling class, Nyr is a very untrustworthy, manipulative, self-serving being. Or.. well, he would be, if he didn't let his emotional lack of control get the better of him so much. He's a highly skilled tinkerer with all manner of things technological and has a great fondness for building his own guns. Despite being quite intelligent and naturally devious, Nyr is surprisingly easy to manipulate, especially when he thinks he's the one in control. Nyr is thousands of years old, but has spent a lot of that time sealed away in a void dimension, and therefore his general knowledge is very out of date for the most part.

Nyr was a military leader during his time as one of the ruling class of his home planet, and still maintains the elements of command; weapons expertise, a penchant for direct action, and a really loud shouting voice. While other Mara are better at silver-tongued manipulations, Nyr often lacks the patience, preferring instead a swift boot to the face or sly possession of a commanding officer. This is doubly frustrating to him then in the case of Anna, his current host, who neither has the remotest position of power nor an especially intimidating physique. Working with what he has, however, Nyr has kept Anna's body stronger than the average teenage girl would have, and could probably win an arm wrestle with your standard adult human male.

As a Mara, Nyr has a very base form of telepathy of his own and is able to sense minds and their shapes. Making psychic contact with him, however, is a terrible, terrible idea, as given the opportunity he is able to twist dreams and take control of illusory mindscapes in weak minds, inflicting emotion and chaos.

Appearance:

Nyr is the mind, but the body is Anna. Anna is a short, somewhat buff (thanks to Nyr) young woman who would have quite an attractive face if it weren't always under the appearance of having some kind of vitamin deficiency. Nyr's presence causes her eyes and teeth to be red-rimmed (an example in Tegan), along with damaged, brittle skin around her lips and an almost constant trickle of nosebleed.

Despite Nyr's lack of care for beauty treatments, Anna's hair is always a glossy, well-cared-for black, due to an expensive nano treatment her parents got for her at her 13th birthday. Her clothes, however, are constantly stained with brown patches and smudges, where Nyr wipes his bleeding nose on his sleeves.

The underside of Anna's right forearm bears the long mark of Nyr: the red and yellow patterned snake. The snake's head is cut from its body by an ugly pink scar right across her wrist, a visible mark that Nyr is now trapped, unable to move to a new body. Very occasionally, Nyr's presence is made more obvious by the points of crimson light that appear in her eyes.

Nyr himself is only visible when in the realm of the mind, chosing the silvery lit visage of a manussan man in clothing vaguely reminiscent of the Sumaran militia. He can take any appearance he pleases, but often maintains the two earrings in his left ear. Nobody has seen him this way for a very long time.

About the Mara:

The Mara (spoilers for old episodes) were originally created when a technological ceremony was performed with the intention of "purifying" the people of the planet Manussa of their negative emotions. The extracted emotions however took on a life of their own, becoming the gestalt entity known as the Mara.

The Mara seized control of Manussa and ruled it as the Sumaran Empire for hundreds of years, before being locked away into a void referred to as the "Dark Places of the Inside". From this place, they maintained a tenuous connection to the physical world, occasionally emerging to cause havoc when given the chance, especially among humans. Notably the Mara gained a foothold on the paradise jungle planet of Deva Loka for many hundreds of years, returning repeatedly to dominate the peaceful inhabitants known as the Kinda. On both Deva Loka and Manussa the Mara encountered the Time Lord known as the Doctor, who thwarted their efforts at expansion and escape. Nyr is from a time after the serials Kinda and Snakedance; he's very aware of the Doctor thanks to the gestalt nature of the Mara, but did not interact with them directly.
