Profile

SAGA was created as a gift to the heir of the Beaumont Corporation for his 21st birthday. He was originally a baseline model pulled from the production line and heavily modified for young Mr. Beaumont. Though originally intended to serve as a bodyguard and general assistant, Mr. Beaumont quickly added sexual mods for his own use.

Through unknown circumstances, SAGA gradually gained an increasing self awareness. Seeing so many other robots be reprogrammed or decommissioned for showing signs of independent thought or personality, he did his best to conceal it and act as he always had. Eventually, Mr. Beaumont caught on, but kept it a secret as well, afraid of the social backlash he'd face if SAGA's....additional modifications were discovered upon reprogramming or decommission.

Mr. Beaumont's discovery did little to change how he treated SAGA even in private. He continued regard him as an object, or as he often put it, a slave. In some regards, it became even worse. Knowing that SAGA now had the capacity to think for himself and act of his own accord, Mr. Beaumont became suspicious, even paranoid. He often threatened SAGA into compliance, or harshly reprimanded him for misinterpreting orders (it could think for itself now, so surely that meant it could figure out how he wanted things done, whether he said so or not). It was entirely unnecessary; while SAGA certainly did not enjoy the treatment, he didn't know anything else. He had no  intention of leaving or harming him, as he had no reason to expect better treatment from anyone else.

Ironically enough, the opposite came to pass. When the S.A.G.A. series was discontinued five years after SAGA's initial boot up, Mr. Beaumont replaced him with a newer model. He was sent to be decommissioned, as Mr. Beaumont didn't want to risk him re-acquiring sentience and retaining memories of his previous life. SAGA, however, was not ready to give up that sentience, and faked stasis to escape in the middle of the night, when security was the only presence in the warehouse.

He spent a period of time wandering and learning his world for, essentially, the first time. As a means of travel, he learned quickly to fake inanimacy so humans would buy, sell, and transport him, then escape when the coast was clear. Eventually SAGA found himself a wager in a bet, resulting in his being brought aboard the MAUM. He intended to sneak away as soon as they next made port, but that took several months, and in that time he grew comfortable. The crew treat him better than Mr. Beaumont ever did, even without knowing his secret. They even have another, seemingly sentient robot among them, and treat him as an equal. And perhaps most importantly, during those months, he found ways to interface and communicate with the ship directly. She is the only one who knows for sure that he is self-aware, but before long, the other members of the crew begin to suspect.

SAGA was initially built as a multi-purpose unit with a focus on personal protection and security. As a result, he is adept in combat (both close and long range), strategy, data gathering, and surveillance. The crew primarily use him as an additional security measure when the ship is empty or understaffed, like a guard dog, and later for hacking enemy security and defenses. He can be further specialized at any time with modifications, upgrades and software updates.

On the other hand, he was not designed for communication, and it shows. He does not speak often, and when he does, its usually with standard installed responses. He has not fully figured out how to string his own sentences together. When not feigning ignorance, he usually "speaks" through a series of tones and clicks rather than words. He can read and type in a few common intergalactic languages. He can also connect directly to the crew's comm links without vocalizing out loud.

Trivia:

  • SAGA still fears being reprogrammed, but as he grows more comfortable with the crew, he allows them minor reprograms to fix bugs and improve efficiency. He refuses to let them do this, or any other upgrades or repairs, while he is powered on.
  • He sometimes creates fractal art in his spare time. Most of them get deleted.
  • He is quite fond of classical music, but has a soft spot for Daft Punk. Other music doesn't have much of an effect on him.
  • His sleep mode is light, similar to a computer's. He can be woken by a slight movement or sounds of moderate volume. If he powers down completely, he must be turned back on manually.
  • He was programmed to perfectly prepare some of Mr. Beaumont's favorite meals in the event the chefs were unavailable.
  • Currently wanted for manslaughter, piracy, larceny, hacking of government databases, petty theft, and damage to personal property.
  • Despite his sexual relationship with Mr. Beaumont, he has never been kissed.
  • He is sometimes found perfectly still and unresponsive, sometimes in the middle of a room or hallway, if not given orders for an extended period of time. He is fully aware and alert, just observing and conserving energy. He will respond if addressed.
