Gene

The first thing people understand about Gene is that she’s almost entirely motivated by money and power to the point that she’ll shed most of her morals in order to get it. Most - she’s not particularly fond of murder unless absolutely necessary. However, she’s fine with lying and cheating and all sorts of nasty, terrible things that ruin lives in order to get money.

Gene is a very analytical person. She sees trends and is quick to implement them. Of course, she’s had to hone this skill over many years of observing people. Gene has been paying a lot of attention to what makes people tick and what they want. It’s how she’s so good at keeping them as repeat customers and manipulating them into doing what she wants.

If there’s one thing that Gene doesn’t like, it’s giving up. She is the kind of person who will see things to their completion, even if there’s a very high chance that things will go wrong. It takes interference from other people to get her to see reason, and even that only works maybe half the time. There are very few people that Gene will actually listen to on a regular basis, and that’s mostly her wife.

Gene is not a particularly emotional person. That’s not to say that she doesn’t experience them - she does. Gene simply prefers to deal with her emotions in private rather than wear them on her sleeve. She has an excellent poker face, although people have described it in other, far less savory terms. It is very rare that her emotions get in the way of her work.

Of course, Gene does have a soft spot. She doesn’t entirely have a heart of stone, after all. This soft spot includes various layers. The first is people Gene finds amusing and keeps around for that purpose. Then it’s employees who have proven themselves to be useful. Finally, there’s the friends and others with whom Gene feels comfortable being vulnerable with. If you manage to get Gene comfortable being vulnerable with you, you have a friend for life.

Gene was originally born on Earth. Her family, a handful of dainties, had decided to settle there in order to aid in the recovery after the apocalypse. As the planet changed - the dominant species becoming something else, the planet’s name changing to Styxian, etc - the dainties found themselves rather out of touch.

Enter Gene, who from a young age had many ideas on how the world should run. She brought the dainties back up to a well respected family by the age of 27 and set them up for success later in life.

However, she would be unable to oversee the remainder of the growth because one day a portal in the sky opened up and sucked Gene through. Suddenly, she was in a whole new place with new rules and things to learn. And of course, there was an absolutely gorgeous woman standing right over her who apparently was the one to bring her through. That woman was Chandra, the woman who would eventually become Gene’s wife.

Gene was smitten at first sight. How could she not be? Her first year in the Golden Isles was spent following Chandra around, trying to learn all she could about this new place. Perhaps Gene should have been upset about leaving her family behind, but frankly she couldn’t care less.

After about a year and a half, Gene opened up the Silver Dice, her casino. It was quite the hit, what with the element of risk and reward that wasn’t present in a lot of other ventures. The reception shocked Gene for only a moment. And then, she decided to embrace the reception and make a lot of money off of it.

Gene has been living comfortably ever since then. She married Chandra and is supportive of her scientific endeavors. Plus, Gene has the money to get people to shut up and stop investigating. It’s a good life, much better than the one she had before for sure.
