Background

Around this time, the demons (under their King) were invading human lands and killing innocent people. The purpose of this was to slowly expand demon rule into the Human Realm. However, long ago both angels and demons agreed to leave the Human Realm alone and stay within their own realm. It was an unwritten agreement that stayed in place for thousands of years, but the demons were starting to break it.

In response, God sent her soldiers to drive the demons back to their own realm. The demons, already expecting this attack, prepared back up and were able to overwhelm the angel soldiers. They massacred the angels without remorse and wore their wings as a trophy of their victory. God saw this as an act of provocation, and without hesitating, she officially announced war against the demons.

Thus began the 100 Year War.

History

Jophiel initially approached Beelzebub with the intent to have a "political" discussion of sorts. She was an archangel while he was an archdemon. They were mortal enemies, especially since they were in the middle of a war, but Jophiel knew that Beelzebub would not attack her. Beelzebub was the smartest among the archdemons, and he was also the most reasonable. Out of the battlefield, he didn't have any reason to kill someone unless he was specifically ordered to. He was also very open to discussions with just about anyone, even an angel like Jophiel.

So Jophiel decided to take her chance and approached Beelzebub in private. She wanted the war to end, and she knew that someone as powerful as Beelzebub could make an impact. He was the primary strategist for the demons who made sure all their attacks were successful. If she could get him on her side, then the demons would be at a severe disadvantage and the war would finally come to an end. She did her best to explain her views, and Beelzebub listened patiently. Jophiel detested war and violence so much, and she even told him that she believed demons and angels could live in harmony. When she was finished, Beelzebub finally expressed his annoyance and simply told her to leave. "What kind of fairy tale are you living in? Demons and angels can never coexist with each other. Only one will prevail, and if the other angels are as foolishly naive as you, then I can assure you that the demons will be victorious."

Jophiel failed with her negotiations that day, but she refused to give up. After that, she began to regularly visit Beelzebub and tried talking to him some more. However, Beelzebub would always shut her down and drive her away. He continued planning attacks against the angels and never even considered negotiations. He loathed angels, and he refused to think of a future where they could get along with demons. Jophiel was very insistent, and her regular visits didn't stop no matter how many times Beelzebub told her to go away. At some point, Beelzebub just stopped caring and decided to completely ignore Jophiel instead. She would arrive at his private library, try to talk to him, and end up being given the cold shoulder. No matter what she did to get his attention, he was immovable.

Realizing that she would get no response from him, Jophiel decided to explore his library instead. She could not see the books (blindsighted), but she enjoyed listening to stories. Eventually, she tried looking for books in Braille, but sadly found nothing. She briefly commented about this to herself, and to her surprise, Beelzebub actually responded. "You're blind?" "Blindsighted actually." "I never noticed." It was a brief exchange, but it was a step into the right (or wrong I should say) direction. Beelzebub continued to ignore Jophiel afterwards, but Jophiel was mostly fine with it. She continued her regular visits, but instead of trying to talk to Beelzebub, she would explore his library some more. This soon became a regular occurrence, and the library became a place where Jophiel would come to relax. The negotiations she had in her mind were slowly starting to fade away, even as the war continued.

Jophiel's visits were practically a routine now, and Beelzebub became used to her presence. She hardly bothered him any more, and when she spoke, it was usually to herself. Beelzebub would sometimes eavesdrop by accident and hear her talking about how she wished she could hear the stories his books held. Beelzebub thought nothing of it (he didn't care about her anyway), but slowly, quietly, he started to read his books aloud. It was barely above a whisper, and he mainly did it unconsciously, but Jophiel heard him. Even from across the library she heard him. She would stop whatever she was doing to listen to his voice. The book he was reading caught her interest, and she would quietly sit down to hear him read the story. This would also become a routine.

Beelzebub read through four books until he finally realized what he was doing. With every book he read, Jophiel would come closer to listen to him. He was shocked at himself for doing such a thing, but he didn't feel like stopping. Instead, he started to read louder, and Jophiel immediately noticed. She didn't say anything though, and the two continued their "reading time" in peace.

Beelzebub eventually accepted the fact that he was indeed reading for Jophiel's sake. He amounted it to pity and nothing more, but he secretly started looking for books in Braille to add to his library. Jophiel would also politely request for Beelzebub to read certain books to her, and he would comply. They slowly started speaking to each other again, and neither one of them mentioned the war. Instead, they often discussed philosophy and human nature. They're opinions were vastly different, and they would get into arguments often. However, both of them were strangely content. "She's the most idiotic angel I've ever met, but she's quite entertaining." "He's so stubborn and negative, but I'm sure I can make him see the brighter side one day!"

Besides reading, they would also partake in games of chess. Jophiel would memorize the pieces and positions on the board and prove to be a formidable challenge. She always lost of course, since Beelzebub is an expert strategist, but both of them would have a fun time. Jophiel would also bring lunch and set up little picnics. Beelzebub stubbornly refused to eat her food at first, but Jophiel crammed it in his mouth and he found himself actually liking the taste.

A decade had passed since their first encounter, and Jophiel and Beelzebub grew much closer. Jophiel opened up about her life when she was still human, and how much everything had changed when she became an archangel. Beelzebub would talk about the the other archdemons and explained the type of society the Underworld had. Beelzebub softened over time, and he eventually started openly smiling/laughing around Jophiel. She absolutely loved it when he let loose like this, and would openly start showing her affection. She hugged Beelzebub everytime she arrived and everytime she would leave (each hug would last just a little longer than the previous one). Beelzebub didn't think much of it since Jophiel was a very affectionate angel in general, but things changed when Jophiel wanted to teach him how to dance.

There was something sensual in the air when Jophiel started showing him the waltz. They had been close before, but the waltz brought them together for a longer period of time. Beelzebub was able to notice small details on Jophiel's face that he would have never seen before. Instead of focusing on his feet, like Jophiel instructed him to, he would focus on her face instead. Jophiel could feel him staring at her, but she didn't say anything about it. It made her feel embarrassed, but happy at the same time. When Beelzebub finally mastered the waltz, Jophiel felt especially happy for him. Quickly and almost naturally, she gave him a small kiss on the cheek. It took them both a few seconds before they realized what had happened. Jophiel immediately apologized for it, but Beelzebub responded by kissing her on the lips. That day, their relationship changed dramatically.

They became romantically involved after that incident, and they made an oath to keep their relationship a secret. If either side found out an archangel and archdemon were lovers, the war would likely escalate to Armageddon levels. But still, Jophiel felt like she was in a dream. She and Beelzebub loved each other very much, and Jophiel would tease him about how angels and demons COULD live in harmony since they were living proof of it. Beelzebub would admit defeat just this once, but in the back of his mind, doubts still remained.

'This won't end well, I'm sure of it. It may seem like paradise now, but we are still at war. As I lay beside her, hundreds of her kind are being slaughtered by demons who are following my battle strategies.'

More to be added later... (WIP)

Important Notes

While in their relationship, Beelzebub did his best not to be so negative around Jophiel. He knew his pessimism always made her sad, so he did his best to see the "good" in things.

Likewise, Jophiel would tone down her optimistic nature because she knew Beelzebub got easily annoyed when she talked about things like "hope" "faith" and "miracles."

Since Jophiel is blind, Beelzebub went out of his way to learn Braille so he could translate his books into Braille for Jophiel to read at home. Even after they separated, Jophiel still has the books he gave her.
