About
For the most part Shay is a sweet girl. Raised to mind her manners and display all the decorum of a young lady, she's fully capable of fitting in with high society .... but to be frank, she'd rather be out and about on her own little adventures. Free to roam as she pleases (under the watchful eye of her chaperone), she can be a bit careless and likes to take the lead even when she's totally out of her (given her age, shallow) depth, but at the very least she's polite, and usually has some precocious observation to make. But perhaps her best trait is her optimism, which rarely wavers even when she realizes she's in genuine danger. She has an unshakable, almost frightening can-do attitude when it counts.
This, of course, becomes unstoppable in the face of her one true love--the mechanical bug. While she'll settle for curio-made replicas, a true, genuine, Ancient-made bug captures her heart like no other. She'll go anywhere and spend anything to have it to add to her collection, and heaven help anyone who tries to get in her way .... Her favourites are the dragonflies, and she keeps her prized specimen with her at all times as a companion.
When not roaming freely, she likes to spend time in her father's Seajewel mansion, playing in the garden atrium with her bug collection or spending some time with her father, Gevaun. Once upon a time she had been attending school, but was switched to tutors at home after a few public incidents involving her powerful aura. Technically she's stable enough to return, but seems to prefer her more loose schedule, and is getting good marks regardless.
History
Shay Modesa is the only daughter of wealthy architect Gevaun Modesa, and so enjoys the full breadth of his budget as she grows up in luxury. Outside of the safety of her beloved garden atrium, relatives and onlookers have speculated endlessly about her origins--Gevaun has claimed parentage over the little blue kit that he brought home one sudden day, but refuses to elaborate on when, where, or from whom she was born. Her strange finlike traits have been chalked up to her father's own mutant genes, but aside from that she bears no resemblance to him at all, which only raises even more questions, ones that even Shay herself doesn't know the answer to. But, she satisfies the role of heir to the family line, and that seems to be enough for now.
Shay herself has lived a fairly consistent life, allowed to explore freely and grow up on her own terms. Not to say that socialization and education are neglected; but, her father's personal values of freedom extend to his daughter as well, and he'd rather have her return with stories to tell at the end of the day than coop her up inside where she won't experience much with a shutin like himself.
Although she has an odd bit of aunmar seemingly implanted into her forehead, her aura is stronger than one might expect from just looking at her. It's caused some serious trouble over the years, but loading her up with beads seems to have gotten it under control, and the room no longer rattles when she gets too excited. It's made her a bit shy about expressing strong emotions, though. She's been taking regular lessons with an auric therapist to become more comfortable with it.
Of course, with the discovery of Tonpelli and a whole subtype of curio that look an awful lot like her, some uncomfortable questions have begun to enter Shay's life....
