About
Many would describe Gevaun as 'brooding' or 'moody'--it's true, he's not a terribly cheerful person, and rarely seems pleased to be out and about. Even the rare guests entertained in his home get only slightly more positive energy. But don't be fooled: while it's true that he doesn't often care for company, it doesn't help at all that he's usually exhausted and braving joint and back pain. But most of his irritability stems from, you know, the heavy, twitching mass of wings that weigh him down everywhere he goes .... if you know anything at all about him, you'll know not to stare.

Looking past his strange appearance, one would find a varied history of notable buildings Gevaun has designed, with his work peppered across Scatterstar in cities and outposts alike. He has very organic sensibilities, preferring smooth curves and the gentle texture of plaster as his tools of choice. Rounded windows with a nook to rest in are his favourite flair. He designs buildings for comfort first, a reflection of his own struggles to carve out some proper rest from the medical issues that plague him. This architectural warmth is sometimes surprising coming from such an outwardly cold fellow, but his drawings are earnest, and he's made enough of a name for himself that he can work almost exclusively in that rounded style these days.

Gevaun enjoys plein air drawing as well as technical work, but doesn't get to indulge as much as he'd like. Much of his evenings are spent keeping his daughter Shay company as well, upon whom he likes to dote in his own reserved way.

History
Gevaun started life as the only Modesa child, next in line of a rather well-off merchant family in Paydo Moga. At first, nothing seemed too amiss--he was slow to walk but quick to speak, and seemed an ordinary kit, if a bit plain. But at around age five, a strange bump appeared on his back one day, one that would grow and grow until it was a feathered wing, jutting asymmetrically from his little body in a matter of months. Naturally, his family was mortified, and discussed having it cut off; things only got more complicated as another wing began to grow, and over the years Gevaun would sprout ten of them in all, one even fusing over his left eye permanently. It was .... unsightly, to say the least, especially as the feathers were still growing in, and Gevaun found the process painful both physically and emotionally. To complicate his gradually offset balance, his joints flared up with pain regularly, which left him with a cane in hand by the age of 20. Being talked about constantly took a toll on him, and as he grew older he closed himself off more and more, giving his family the cold shoulder as they tried to shape him into a passable heir and making few, if any, friends.

By the time he was old enough to choose his own secondary education, Gevaun found himself drawn to architecture. He'd always been interested in technical drawing, often putting hours into immaculate reproductions of buildings and objects, but playing with the math of elegantly curving buildings satisfied his creative itch perfectly. Naturally, it was another mark against him in his family's eyes; the family business ultimately got passed to a cousin as Gevaun staunchly refused to engage with it, but there was still pressure on him to marry and produce an heir. Gevaun, on the other hand, had no interest. He hardly wanted to fulfill their wishes, but there was also the matter of simply not being very appealing for an economic marriage, and he considered himself too unattractive to seek a more love-based union. He also deeply feared passing his mutation on to any descendents .... a fate he would hardly want to impose on anyone. And so, he resisted, going so far as to move to Seajewel to escape the paws of his family.

It was mostly chance that led to him finding a solution, of sorts. He'd been contacted out of the blue; a letter, an old contractor, a warehouse on the edge of Seajewel, and an enormous favour that Gevaun simply couldn't decline, not when he saw what was at stake .... A week later he'd announced to his family that he was a father. Questions would not be answered. They were only to welcome one Shay Modesa into the world, and acknowledge her as an obligation fulfilled.

Of course, things have changed with the appearance of the Undyre, haven't they?

Design + Notes
  • 'wing' over his eye is fused into place.
  • wing structures are not fully functional and lack a full range of movement; sometimes twitch or shift involuntarily.
  • pawpads are a blue-grey.
  • bands on his pants (around the hocks) are actually a built-in brace, to help stabilise poor joints.
  • cane is for function rather than fashion, and he rarely goes without it.
  • almost always has his hair up.
  • cape and jacket both don't cover the whole back; to leave room for wings, of course.
  • almost never smiles, even when he's having fun.
  • wears exclusively black. red accents are the most colour he'll allow.
  • speaks softly and seriously most of the time, but has a deceptively booming voice that he saves for only the most annoying circumstances.

  daughter Shay
Father and daughter, one way or another. He loves her dearly, and spoils her rotten. Their strange features lend them a certain kinship.

  assistant Torvel
The latest in a long line of paid assistants. Torvel might actually be tough enough to stick around. They have an amicably professional relationship.

  second cousin Janus
A freeloading cousin-or-other sheltering under the Seajewel mansion roof by family request. As far as Gevaun is concerned, the guy is deranged.

  friend Kabaiel
A peculiar but welcome friend of the family. Gevaun enjoys their artistic discussion and plein air sessions.

  cousin Jex
A fellow family disappointment that Gevaun finds actually tolerable. Despite their similarities in family standing, though, they don't really have much to talk about it, and Jex's awkward vibes make it all the more difficult to commiserate.

  cousin Jagari
Gevaun is grateful someone else took over his predestined role at the family shipping company, but he often wishes it didn't have to be Jagari. Although the two are natural enemies, it's more convenient to get along.
