Summary
Takayama Yuta is a first year who is extremely unlucky. Not only was he born unlucky, his nervous disposition makes him the target for severe bullying. On a particularly brutal day, he escapes into the forest and finds a straw doll nailed against a tree. Yuta realizes quite quickly that it's a wara ningyō or cursing doll. Yuta, at first doesn't think much of it because of his skeptical nature but decides to research how to do the ritual and sets about buying a kit from the internet to try it out on the person he hates the most: Atsuhisa Ryuji. After performing the dark ritual, Yuta doesn't think it works until the next day Ryuji gets injured by a car, leaving him in critical condition. Yuta tries to tell himself that it was not his fault but when he starts being followed by a mysterious figure, he can't deny that something is going on...
Trivia
- In this story, using a wara ningyō or any other kind of katashiro causes a release of yokai and spirits to follow the caster of the curse. The more times you use it, the more likely you are to be followed by these entities.
- Only two people (at first) are aware that Yuta used the wara ningyō. Mr. Kirihara Yusuke, the science teacher and Saguchi Rina, a second year. While Mr. Kirihara is strongly against its use, Rina wants to use it for her own gain to get revenge on a boy who wronged her.
- Yuta is strongly skeptical and anxious by nature. He's not really good at talking to people and just wants to be liked by anyone which often leaves him conflicted when he doesn't want to do something.
- The curse spell using the wara ningyō is called Ushi no koku mairi (Shrine Visit at the hour of the ox) and takes place during 1-3 am which is said to be the time when evil spirits have the most power.
