Takayama Yuta has been bullied since middle school. Because of his anxious nature and stutter, he's been the target for bullies. Highschool is not any different.
Every day, Yuta must endure severe bullying by a group of boys in his year while most others turn a blind eye to it. He feels alone, afraid and generally frustrated. After a particularly brutal beating by Ryuji, he takes a shortcut through the woods and finds a straw doll nailed to a tree. Intrigued by it, he decides to take it home and after some research finds out that it's a cursing doll (wara ningyo). Angered by the day's event, he decides to look into cursing Ryuji, his main tormentor.
Things go south when he actually manages to curse Ryuji and he begins to be followed by yokai and spirits because of the dark energy he released from using the wara ningyo. One of his teachers, Kirihara Yusuke, notices right away that something is off about Yuta's behavior and inquires about his higher level of anxiety recently to which Yuta explains what he had done. Disappointed and also terrified, Mr. Kirihara tries to find a way to reverse the curse and tells Yuta to never use the doll again and to burn it.
On his way out to the woods to burn the doll, he runs into Saguchi Rina who says she overheard him speaking to Mr. Kirihara and she wants him to help her curse a boy in another class who had sexual assaulted her at a party. He tries to refuse but is swayed by Rina's story and agrees to do the ritual one more time, not knowing the consequences. He attempts to do the ritual again but is stopped by Kurosaki Shiki, a popular, stoic upperclassman who explains that he created the curse kits out of boredom and they shouldn't have worked.
He decides to watch the ritual skeptically, remarking how nothing would happen. The next day, the boy that the curse was aimed at dies in a horrific, freak accident. After this, all three who were present at the second ritual start to experience seeing unnatural and even supernatural things around them. After Yuta is attacked by a young girl with gouged out eyes, the trio decide to team up to try to end the curse. If only it was that easy...
