History

A first generation Mexican-American, Amanda Alfaro was barely 20 when she met a very handsome, curly haired blond in one of her college classes in Houston, Texas. She was studying to be a certified nurse, but had signed up for a theater class as one of her electives as the arts were her true passion. They got along swimmingly and started hanging out a lot during all of their free time. By the time the semester ended, they were inseparable. She could never have imagined that her fairytale romance would be short lived, ending abruptly when she found she was pregnant.

Amanda was in no way prepared to be a mother and her first instinct was to get an abortion, especially when her beloved bailed on her almost as soon as she told him about the precarious situation she was in. However, before she could have the chance to make the difficult decision of whether to get an abortion or not, her parents found out and ripped the choice from her hands. If she had an abortion, they said, then she would no longer be welcome in their home and could no longer consider herself their daughter. This was her mistake, and she had to own up to it and take responsibility. They would help, of course, but this was on her. By the time her daughter was born, Amanda was forced to drop out of school and find work instead.

Loren wasn’t intentionally difficult, but to say that she was an easy child would be a lie.She was energetic, clingy and often craved attention, and her tired, overworked caretakers couldn’t always make time for her in the ways that she wanted them to. When she didn’t get her way, she’d throw loud tantrums and cause scenes. As she got older and her powers started manifesting, her meltdowns started to make those around her feel sick. Whenever a fit of temper came, dizziness, headaches, and nausea followed for those unfortunate enough to be around her. The situation was only made worse when Loren started to attract the unwanted attention of shifty looking people, monsters in disguise intending to gobble her up. It became difficult to take Loren anywhere, so her mother had her stay home more often, only increasing her clinginess and hissy fits.

Amanda was at her wits end by the time a satyr stumbled upon the young Apollo demigod, for once bringing good news. Apparently, Loren’s father hadn’t lied when he told her he was a god - something she had just chalked up to him being an egomaniac theater major. Plus, there was a whole camp for demigods like Loren, where they would not only learn to defend themselves from monsters, but also be with other children like them. Loren spent one last birthday at home, her 10th, before leaving for Camp Half Blood. She was excited at the prospect of meeting other children like her - siblings, too! - and was hopeful to maybe even meet her dad. She didn’t realize, at the time, that this is where she would end up spending most of the rest of her childhood.

Camp Half-Blood

While she was initially excited to be in CHB, Loren quickly realized that, not only was she unclaimed and had to sleep in the Hermes cabin, but also, unlike most other kids, she was not allowed to go home at the end of the summer. She made friends with some of the other year rounders, but never lost hope that she would eventually be able to go home again.

To her credit, Amanda did bring her daughter home the year she turned 12. She had used the two years' time to turn her life around and get some work training done. She had a better job and had managed to move out from her parents' and into her own apartment. She thought she could make things work with her daughter. However, her resolve lasted surprisingly little: An incident with Loren's temper getting out of hand and causing mass food poisoning at the local McDonalds was impressive enough to not only make the evening news (it was blamed on undercooked and spoiled meats and the restaurant was shut down for 2 weeks) but also finally get her claimed by Apollo. However, it was also all the excuse Amanda needed to send her back to Camp Half Blood. Loren had been home scarcely a month.

The next attempt to bring her home for good lasted longer. Loren was 15 when she returned home, and while she had a better control of her emotions (and her powers), they constantly clashed over everything. Amanda's need to step up as an authority figure was not appreciated by Loren, who had by this point gotten used to doing things with no adult supervision. Sometime around the 4 month mark, when things were already tense, a hellhound found Loren at their apartment. In the chaos that ensued, she completely wrecked the place. This was the last straw for Amanda, who had had enough of her daughter seemingly going out of her way to ruin her life. The feeling was mutual. Loren went back to camp and never again tried to go back.

Around this time, she met the Coleman twins, Zeus demigods who also came from Texas. Attracted by the novelty of identical twin demigods, Loren approached them with the intent to befriend them. They were able to bond over their shared background as she showed them around camp and introduced them to her friends. By this point she was a veteran camper and knew all the tips, tricks, and secret spots, and she was willing to show them everything she knew in order to get their favor. She could leverage this friendship for a few little care packages when they went back home after the summer; her favorite brands of candy and snacks weren’t available this far north and she didn’t have any outside contacts who could ship them in for her.

Quest

After coming to terms with camp being her full time home, quests became the only way Loren could see the outside world and avoid being boxed in camp year round. She started vying to be one of the chosen demigods every time there was a quest available, often butting heads with other campers, like Illiza, over the limited open spots. When the time finally came for Loren to go on her own quest, a seemingly simple fetch mission to help a demigod in distress. After learning the demigod in distress was her younger brother Kasey, Loren chose the Coleman twins as her companions in a rush, convinced that having such powerful demigods assisting her would make the quest a breeze to complete.

The quest, however, was destined for failure. Although Kasey was alive, he was severely injured and his companion, Zayd, had been killed by a drakon, quickly turning the fetch mission into an ambush. In the ensuing fight one of the twins, Axl, was gravely injured and despite Loren’s best attempts to heal him, he died from his extensive wounds. Loren and the remaining Coleman twin, Ace, were able to scrape by, despite grave injury to themselves. After killing the monster, they Iris messaged CHB in order to retrieve the fallen demigods' bodies and lay them to rest in the camp grounds. However glad she was that Kasey was ok, guilt weighed heavily on Loren’s mind over failing to save not only her brother's beloved, but also of losing one of her friends in the process.

However, the loss was especially hard on Ace, who was now on his own and had to bring the bad news to his mom. He went home after summer ended, but Loren was surprised to find him back in camp a few months later. The frequency and intensity of monsters attacks he attracted as a child of the Big Three were too much for him to handle on his own, especially while still processing the grief of losing his brother.

In the months that followed, they started growing closer together and with time, their closeness grew into affection. They knew the sort of pain and guilt they each were going through and became nothing short of inseparable. By the time Loren’s time in CHB was coming to a close, having grown too old to be allowed to stay, they decided to leave together at the end of the summer. Loren knew nothing about living outside of camp and Ace was willing to teach and learn together with her, as he was still piecing his life together after his loss.

Life after Camp

However, as much as Loren had been looking forward to her freedom once she was out of camp, the cracks in the relationship soon started to show. Loren’s freedom clashed with Ace's need for control, borne in an attempt to stop another tragedy like what happened during their quest. He had veto power over every place she wanted to go or thing she wanted to do. This, along with their different coping mechanisms - Loren looking to face her grief head on and talk about it, and Ace trying to push his grief down and ignore it - started to lead to constant arguments and soon, they were fighting over everything. Things came to a head one night when, intoxicated and in the heat of the moment, they both said things they later regretted. Among those hurtful remarks, Ace blamed Loren for his brother’s death.

Already wrecked with guilt, Loren took the accusation to heart. She quickly packed her things and went off into the night, hitchhiking her way through Texas as she tried to figure out what to do. Going back to CHB was out of the question, but she had siblings all over the country; maybe one of them would take her in. She was headed to New York city to see one of her brothers when she encountered the goddess Aphrodite in the unlikeliest of places: the bar of a seedy hotel by the side of the highway.

After her recent heartbreak, Loren was weary of dealing with the goddess of love. However, she only offered some cryptic words of encouragement before telling her about a place, an island off the coast of Georgia where the goddess Amphitrite was spearheading a community for adult demigods like her. As a parting gift, she charmed Loren’s necklace - a gift from Ace that she hadn’t the heart to part with yet - and turned it into a key that’d open the gates of Little Olympia. Loren, despite thinking that it was a cruel joke to have charmed such an item, thanked the goddess. She then made her way to the island, to join the growing community there and reuniting with friends and siblings from her CHB days.

Ace Coleman [ ex-partner ]

Loren's ex-partner of 9 years who she has complicated feelings for. Their break-up was quick and messy, leaving them both with bruised feelings and avoiding one another like the plague. She feels responsible for the death of his twin brother, Axl.
