Meet "Evelyn"
A shadow creature that wandered the woods, Evelyn was without name or purpose for who knows how long.
Then, she stumbled upon an old worn-down witch's hut.
There, she met Hat, a still-sentient artifact that was left to rot by the previous resident of the home.
The curious shadow and the rambling clothing scraps then somehow created a pact with one another.
This gave Evelyn a more sense of consciousness & intelligence, While giving Hat a new form and host again, all the while being able to share with Evelyn their newfound abilities.
Hat decided to name their new host Evelyn, after an old companion of theirs that had long since disappeared from this realm.
Now they wander together, in search of answers of what they are, where Hat's previous master had gone, and maybe even Evelyn's mysterious past.
