When the Scions defeated the lightwarden Titania, Rigel was overcome by a particularly violent echo flashback. They saw Titania's descent into becoming a lightwarden, the loss of control, the pain, the torture... it was too much for them to bear.
Succumbing to the light energy, Rigel is overwhelmed by Titania as they fell, and begins to transform into a sin eater. As their transformation takes place, through their screaming and begging, they accept the role of Titania... or rather, Oberon.
Unbeknownst to them at the time, the former Titania was a shard of Rigel's Azem, Artemis.
The Oberon trial is a two phase fight, with the first phase being Rigel as Titania. It quickly switches, however, as Rigel is transformed into a much more demented and dangerous sin eater, Oberon.
