I am NOT a human.

Summary

Beauty IS the beast. alternatively: reverse Dorohedoro

Rin is a stoic dragonborn monk who was cursed to be a human. She's currently working for a mafia-like organization in a desert town called Oasis. She's been attacked by mana sprites and inflicted with mana sickness, transforming parts of her body back into her pre-curse form. Rin can now transform her arms between human/dragonborn at-will thanks to a dragon's blessing(???), but also that dragon is going to end the world so she is trying to stop that :]

Fun facts: She loves her new pet ankylosaur Shipwrecker and apparently stinks to other draconic beings. (She smells like a herb that a lot of draconic creatures don't like. It's like dragon cilantro.)

  • Primary Drive: Breaking the curse
  • Fears: Being wrong, the unknown, never going back to her old body
  • Style of Self-Expression: Blunt, arrogant, physical
  • Expresses Affection: through words, but in a roundabout way
  • Controlled by/Weak for: Impostor syndrome, bringing honor to her family

Appearance

  • Height: 6'6" (7'2" with horns)
  • Weight: ~280 lbs
  • Body Type: Beefy
  • Scales / Skin: Silver / Light
  • Eyes: Black
  • Hair: Silver

Personality

Rin is loud, proud, artistic, and oblivious to etiquette and social expectations.

  • Ideals: Live and Let Live. Meddling in the affairs of others only causes trouble, especially since she believes that her affairs were meddled with, in the form of a curse— however, this ideal may be changing as Rin finds herself in all-new situations out in the real world that may require Rin to decide whether to step in or not...
  • Bonds: Gotta bring honor to the family. Even though she feels that they could’ve put more effort into teaching her about adventuring and socializing in general, Rin still appreciates what they do for her.
  • Flaws: Does not know when to shut up, would rather double down on something incorrect than admit that she’s wrong in an argument, is a little bit racist and lazy - both more out of ignorance and being sheltered rather than malicious intent.

This next part probably seems like backstory but I PROMISE it explains her personality.

Rin's family is super NOT racist but they still have tense interactions with chromatic dragonborn. They're baffled at where she got these antihuman ideas in the first place, and Rin doesnt really believe them herself! At least, at first she didn't. It was a little bit of hearing relatives talk about their dragonborn pride, combined with books and scrolls about racial differences (“The average human is a little less sturdy compared to the average dragonborn, got it”). It was a basic, inoffensive understanding.

Rin began experiencing some stress as a young teen because she knew she wasn't good at talking and wouldn't live up to her family’s expectation/tradition of leaving the monastery to become diplomats or other forms of correspondents. (Also, she's just too lazy for that kind of job. Or any kind of job.)

ADDITIONALLY, the family was Huge with lotsa siblings and cousins and aunts and uncles, so it was hard for Rin to feel like she received enough attention (middle child syndrome). To top it all off, even though the monastery occasionally hosted some humans and visitors of other races, Rin is very afraid of outsiders/the unknown.

Rin turned this fear into aggression and a superiority complex as a way of 1) pushing strangers away to avoid getting hurt (better to hurt them before they hurt her), and 2) getting attention from her family by saying and doing outrageous things. Any attention was good attention :)

Story

Rin grew up in a large family-run monastery. Her dragonborn family carries on their ancestors’ admiration for the physical strength and beauty of dragons through the way of the kensei, emphasizing the arts in “martial arts.” Rin’s rather abrasive personality developed as a way to compete for the adults’ attention with her many siblings and cousins. She never felt good enough to be a diplomat as was the silver dragonborn custom, so she covered up her insecurity with arrogance and lowered everyone's expectations by doing absolutely nothing.

One winter night, a mysterious human asked for shelter at the monastery. They had the misfortune of being answered by Rin, who refused and insulted humans for “not being strong enough to endure a snowstorm” and “probably not being able to survive even after resting at the monastery.” The stranger was offended and left to find somewhere else to stay, but not before transforming Rin into a human herself.

Rin always wanted an excuse to break out of the seclusion, and this was the perfect boiling point. With the support of her parents, Rin set out to find the stranger to lift the curse. She only caught one identifying feature that night: a gloved, seven-fingered hand.

  • Monastery: The monastery is carved out of a mountainside
  • Monastic Icon: Dragon. The creation myth of dragonborn as descendants of dragons is taken VERY seriously by the Shelestendiir family.
  • Master: Rin trained under her kind yet exasperated dad. He never really pushed her to her limits, and he enabled her lazy tendencies.

Relationships

Calliope Fairchild

Calliope and Rin met when they were hired to escort a merchant, but now they're adventuring friends. They enjoy each other's company, but sometimes Rin doeesn't understand what Calliope means.

Trivia

  • Loosely based on my oldest OC (also named Rin) that Code also came from
  • She's... vaguely Asian... (Central Asian-coded with Vietnamese influence)
  • Her main outfit (the blue "warm weather" one) is based on áo bà ba, áo tứ thân, and yếm
  • I gave her a ridiculous "Russian" accent where she switches her W's and V's
