Personality

 stone-faced  🔗  curious  🔗  blunt  🔗  merciful  🔗  inscrutable

Iskal resides beyond the realm of mortal comprehension and, as such, has had little understanding with mortals and does not understand emotion very well. They are an observer first and foremost, an abstract thing that has become curious about those that are constant. Their expressionlessness and bluntness causes them to seem cold, and yet they are capable of great acts of mercy. They seek out the dying and claim their souls in exchange for restoring their life and are far more lenient than any sort of "demon" ought to be. When a subject of theirs dies, they'll often revive them instead of devouring their soul, observing their life closely to see what happens next.

Iskal is difficult to understand simply because they operate on such a different train of thought. To them, living planes are like games. They like to look through different viewpoints and nudge their subjects in different directions, simply observing for reasons no one is sure of. They don't seem violent or malevolent, however, and even have a bit of a calming aura about them...

Backstory

"Very well. I will show you mercy."

Theoretically, Iskal has always existed. They exist on a higher plane, still within the boundaries of Entirety but unseen to most of it. These "higher beings" can be viewed only by those with the magical ability to call upon them, those on the verge of death, those who intake the proper substances, those whose souls vibrate at a high enough frequency, and those who said higher beings choose to appear before. Their origins and mannerisms are poorly-studied due to the difficulty in contacting them, much less actually studying them. Most beings cannot comprehend higher beings for long, with prolonged exposure leading to dissolving of the mind and corruption of the soul. There are theories about them - that they're embodiments of the fabric of Entirety, that they're amalgamations of dead souls that never reincarnated, so on and so forth. Iskal may know the truth, but they will not speak it.

At some point within the past few years they abruptly began to manifest before the dying in lower planes, claiming their souls in exchange for the dying being granted immortality. One such case is with Lysis Persenche: an ordinary human being who wound up in a nasty motorcycle accident of his own fault and was on the verge of death. He hastily accepted Iskal's offer despite his fear - or perhaps because of it - before promptly turning around in their next meeting and pleading for a way out. Iskal agreed to release Lysis' soul in exchange for reaping 1,000 souls for Iskal's personal use and has focused on observing him ever since.

Iskal's motivations are unclear. It seems like they just want to see how lower beings react to different situations with all of their emotions and mortality, but is that really it?

     ...Yes, actually.
