Personality
Lark is easily the most charming and charismatic member of her crew. Oftentimes, she uses this talent to flirt with pretty women, but she can generally talk her way out of a situation without resorting to flirtation. On a side note, she has accidentally spawned a few revolutions and gotten gold out of it.
Lark is primarily motivated by gaining wealth and exploring the vast universe. The world is so much bigger than one planet and there are so many places to go! Also, there are so many riches and cool trinkets to steal! In general, Lark tends to be fairly self interested. Outside of her ship, her crew, and her wealth, she cares little for the goings on of the average joe.
Interestingly, despite being a pirate, Lark dislikes killing and tries to avoid it, but if the only way out is death, then she will. Lark gets more aggressive if her crew is threatened. She absolutely adores her crew and would do anything for all these ringox. If something were to happen to them, well, she’s not sure what she’d do but it wouldn’t be pretty.
As a side note, since Lark’s ship travels through the Iris (the rainbow sea between worlds and times) she doesn’t necessarily experience time linearly compared to everyone else. This means that she knows things that most folks won’t and she absolutely loves to be cryptic about it. She plays it up for drama and laughs.
History
Lark was found as a baby by some human pirates and named Carmilla. Whether she was genuinely found or kidnapped from somewhere, she’s uncertain but ultimately doesn’t care. She’s been a pirate her whole life, aside from a brief stint as a bartender in her early 20s. This was a rough time - the captain (whom she considered a father) had just died, and the rest of the crew was either killed or captured by the royal navy.
She got bored of that after a couple years, though. Lark busted the few survivors out of prison, adopted a few more crewmates from the slums, and stole the prize ship of the royal navy before sailing off into the sunset as the captain. This ship was the Stargazer, and she was more than happy to show Lark the secrets of the Iris.
It was a good few years, sailing through the Iris, stealing from places they’d never see again and getting wealthier by the day. Unfortunately, Lark failed to account for two things: one, that she was a ringox and the rest of her crew were human or human adjacent, and two, the Iris tends to break the human mind.
During a routine raid, Lark’s crew lost it one by one and died. Lark barely managed to escape with her life, losing an eye and falling into a serious depression. She was barely able to sail by herself, until finally ending up in a harbor by some strange battlefield where half the dead were exactly the same in every way and there were no survivors.
Well, almost no survivors. There was a lone ringox, heavily injured but still somehow alive. Lark patched her up, helped her pick a name, and adopted her into her crew. As Lark and Briar travelled across space and time, they adopted more and more crew from the strangest of circumstances.
It was during this time that Lark decided to go by Lark. It was less syllables and more memorable to the women she seduced and the navies she pissed off. Plus, there’s just a certain air about Carmilla that makes it special, like people shouldn’t say it unless she explicitly said it was okay.
Over the years, Lark would develop a reputation for herself and her crew. Along with being fearsome pirates that terrorized the multiverse, they also were known for seducing a variety of interested women. Ranging from a grey-skinned mad scientist to an ancient chaos being, Lark would find herself with a variety of interesting lovers that never lasted particularly long. Why would they? She had no desire for a long term relationship except that of a captain and her crew on the high seas!
Yeah okay the crew became a polycule. Lark’s not quite sure how that happened, but she quite likes the way things turned out. After all, when you’re on the Iris for such a long time with only a handful of people that hey, you actually quite like, things happen. Lots of things.
Also Guinevere showed up fairly recently and integrated herself into the crew really quickly, with a particular interest in Lark. Lark is very fond of her, of course, she’s just not sure about how quickly Guinevere’s going.
Design Notes
- Lark's design is based on "Sailor Song" by Toy-Box.
- Lark's other theme song is "Drunk Space Pirate" by The Mechanisms.
- Lark tends to wear pretty classic pirate gear, with a big sweeping jacket, a tricorn hat, a loose off-white shirt and breeches. The back of her shirts has a hole cut out of it for her wings.
- The wings on Lark’s head do move, although they’re mostly used to emote. Otherwise she keeps them tucked against her face.
- Beneath Lark’s eyepatch is an empty, scarred up socket.

Relationships
Briar was the first ringox to join Lark’s new crew, and goddamn if Lark isn’t fond of her. The two work well together, and often go drinking together when they make landfall. Also, Lark is very invested in the mystery of Briar's origins.
Morgause is the woman to go to for both a good time and a violent time. Lark particularly enjoys complaining about life with her. The one thing that Lark secretly worries about is Morgause deciding that the Stargazer actually sucks and burning it down.
Lark probably would’ve died multiple times over if it weren’t for Ulysses. She owes them her life, and frankly she wouldn’t owe it to anyone else. They’re brilliant and a damn good crewmate. Also, Lark and Ulysses have a betting pool on the rest of the crew.
Sure, Odin is a wee bit unhinged. While this is mildly unsettling, Lark attributes it to the fact that Odin has been marked by the Iris since she was a young thing and thus is far more attuned to it than the rest of the crew. They get along fine.
Lark is protective of the Stargazer, but she trusts Aurora to take the wheel and navigate, especially after they went through hell and back together. The one thing she refuses to let Aurora do is tell her when and how she’s going to die.
Lark really likes Guinevere. However, Guinevere wants to take it a whole lot more seriously than Lark does, and they still have a lot to work out. Lark’s not sure how far she wants to take the relationship. They do get along quite well otherwise.
Lark has no idea how Iphis manages to keep all those books and ship’s logs safe, but damn if she isn’t impressed. Lark does end up bickering with Iphis a lot, though. Don’t get Lark wrong, she has killed for Iphis, Iphis just gets under her skin.
Cadence is absolutely essential on the ship. She keeps everyone aware of the rules, divides up the treasure equally and has the best sense of rhythm this side of the Iris. Lark lets her lead the shanties - she’s more than happy to let Cadence run this particular show.
Not only is Victoria damn good with any kind of weapon, she’s also the best chef the ship has got. Victoria may complain about cooking, but Lark knows how much she actually enjoys it. Lark is also one of only 2 people on the ship that Victoria opens up to.
Look, if there’s anything Lark hates more than anything else, it's the damn sirens of the Iris. Adelpha has been the one she’s encountered most often, and thus the one who gets most of her ire.
