Currently there exist four phoenix' on Earth, originating with the Ziz (Dante). The Ziz is the only three of the mammoth creatures created for the apocalypse that can divide, and create others of his kind. The division comes at a price, creating a new phoenix, but taking pieces of the original fire bird with it. The occurrence is rare, with it only having happened twice in his long lifetime. First, it brought into existence a phoenix created from the darkest parts of humanity. Then, one of corruptible innocence. The fourth phoenix, an outlier, was born from demon magic. The three were born not knowing what they were, as it takes death to awaken the fire birds abilities.

Dante, the original phoenix, has been around for what he would say is far too long of a time. Having been created along side the earth itself, he spent a large portion of his life as a sky-god, flying through the clouds in what was a lonely existence. Eventually integrating with humans as it became easier to do so, he moved through the centuries, hiding what he was and enjoying the growth and expansion of mankind. Though his deaths were infrequent, through the course of history one such death brought him an unwanted companion in Kris. A dangerous, violent creature, Kris was intensely possessive over the kinder, quieter phoenix. The two settled into an uneasy relationship for many decades, with Dante enduring the other birds tendencies, until the violence took one of his lives. This violent death causing a split, yet another phoenix was born (Teddy).

Intent on protecting the new fire bird, Dante ran away from Kris, taking Teddy with him. Raising him as a younger brother, he found this companion to be more gentle and curious, calming what had been a tumultuous life up to that point. It only lasted so long before Kris found them, damaging Teddy permanently, and attempting to resume his tense relationship with Dante. Furious with the other bird, Dante went after him with a weapon in hand, and spent weeks killing his counterpart anytime he stubbornly came near. Both of them losing lives in the process, Kris eventually relented and disappeared, leaving the two brothers alone.

Centuries passed, things were quiet, until present-day, when Dante found himself drawn to another man. Phoenix are often drawn to each other like magnets, regardless of history or danger. In this case, the pull was to another of his kind, but one he was oddly unfamiliar with. Not Kris, but certainly similar, Dante and Julian met and instantly there was desire between them. It turns out, Julian was Kris's son(/clone), born in a way not normal for their kind. He was also closely involved with his father, and brought the man back into Dante's life.

In the end, the four live as a small interlocked family, with Dante, Kris & Jules being in a poly-amorous relationship.
