James
- Head is scaly until the ears, then becomes furred

- Stripe pattern is random, but generally follows that of a Sumatran tiger

James appears frightening at first, and he can be--he is not one to be messed with! However, beneath his intimidating facade, James is complex. He is introspective, intellectually curious, and devoted to those whom he cares about. For the most part, though, he would rather that the average person not know these things, and simply leave him be. Theme song: Alvaro and Mercer ft. James hails from Indonesia, but moved to Hawaii to pursue higher education at his parents' urging. He put his keen intellect to good use and snagged a position as a chemistry teacher at a prestigious high school in Honolulu. James has a well-deserved reputation amongst his students as a stickler and a tough grader. However, James teaches his students in such a fashion because he truly cares about them and wants them to succeed--in spite of his tough demeanor, he really is a good guy.
Ashley is James' girlfriend--she is an elementary school art teacher in the same district where he works, and the two met at a school board meeting. Ashley is a delight--enthusiastic, bubbly, and peppy. Although she and James might not appear to match up at first, their natures actually complement one another well. Ashley does what she can to soften James' attitude, and in return, James does all that he can to protect her.
James and Astrid got to know one another when Ashley, who works with Astrid, introduced them. James, not one to be easily charmed by anyone, nevertheless found something to like in Astrid's outwardly reserved, yet ultimately warm and accepting, demeanor. Astrid was nervous about James at first--he seemed so tough--but has now come to see his nurturing side and thus considers him to be a dear friend. Astrid nowadays does her best to remedy James' "tin ear," while he teaches her about the science of acoustics.
Conchita and James were introduced by Astrid, as Astrid is Conchita's girlfriend. James was uncertain as to what to make of loud, bubbly Conchita at first--he found her to be a bit intimidating! However, Conchita soon won James over with her cheerful and inclusive ways. James now helps to keep Conchita from getting too wild, while she helps him to have a little more fun.
Natisha was introduced to James by Astrid, as she is one of Astrid's younger sisters. As Natisha is an astronomer, she quickly bonded with James over their shared love of science. James relishes Natisha's insightfulness and innovative way of thinking. In turn, Natisha values James' expertise in his field, and enjoys the fact that she is one of the few people who can make him smile.
Violetta is Astrid's other younger sister, and she introduced her to James. James has at times been unsure of what to think of Violetta--she is quite bold and will say whatever is on her mind, in contrast to taciturn James. However, Violetta respects James, and so she has encouraged him to give voice to his opinions more often. James appreciates these efforts, and, though he would not have expected it, he now sees Violetta as a role model.
