 backstory 

    The life of an independent contract killer is an arduous one. But before she gained a semblance of freedom, Penumbra's fare was markedly worse. She never talks about it now, but the grem's early life was wrought of strict regimens and asceticism. Rigorous language, stealth, and combat training within an insular secret society taught her to kill despite being created to be a pet. Her original owners crossed the organization, and days after arrival at their home, Penumbra was abducted. Memories of those few days were supressed by her own will and that of her abductors to the point where she thinks she was never a human's pet. To her recollection, her early years consisted only of serving the will of the organization by hunting humans and grems.

   Over time the organization fell apart from the inside. The power-hungry undermined their leaders and manipulated the rest, and eventually the faction split - then splintered. The end came after Penumbra's last mission for the group. She was tricked into killing the group's matriarch and prophet figure, Zenith, making her the cult's prophesied demon and killer, "Nadir". All but one of the group thought the act was an intentional betrayal, and her fellows fled from her. She lingered in their home for days, but they knew how to disappear. Penumbra eventually realized that the one who had tricked her would sow hate and vengeance among her peers over time, and one day someone would seek her out with terrible intent. Reluctantly, she became an independent agent, always on the move and hunting Cypherus, politicians, and anyone else with enough enemies to have a contract out for their demise. The only marks she refuses are those she's been paid to leave alone - namely members of large gangs and their loved ones if the gangs' leaders can afford to pay her off.

       Penumbra's constantly suspicious of others motives as though anyone could be as dangerous as she is.

       While she seems dismissive of opinions on her personality, she does not let insinuations about her past or reputation go unanswered.

       She never hesitates when others, even friends, have lapses in judgement or form bad habits. In some cases she even encourages it.
  • Self-destructive
       Pen doesn't just try to ruin others; she indulges in things that are terribly harmful to herself, including relationships that she knows are unhealthy and wildly unstable.
