About

In his mortal life, Kalhicel was the leader of a tribe of fauns, and held substantial power and influence even over neighboring tribes. Eventually, a family of douhmel, Lidein, decided to raid the village, took hostages for food, and killed the rest. The leader fought long and hard to protect those he could, then managed to negotiate with the vampires for the release and safe passage of the last group he was defending (his family, a few friends, some weaker members of the tribe). He said he would join their side and be a loyal servant if they left this group alone to live out their lives. The douhmel didn’t really care about having a mortal helping them, since they were pretty able themselves and had nothing to gain from him. But a few members decided they liked his bravery and determination, having done pretty well defending the group so far and then willing to sacrifice himself for their happiness. They saw a strength in him that would make him a great pawn. So they agreed, took him to never see his family and tribe again, and turned him into a haeryc. As Kalhicel promised, he was faithful to his new douhmel family and merciless when it came to even the hardest orders. Eventually, he forgot about his original family and tribe, and lost all emotion and connection to his mortal past. He knew only to do what he was told.

One day he was sent out on a mission with a douhmel partner, and when making a supply visit to a town, they were confronted by vampire hunters (way in the past, when hunters were well versed in hunting douhmel). Though douhmel and haeryc were far stronger than any mortal, they were hit with a surprise attack that instantly took out his partner. Heavily injured, Kalhicel managed to escape due to the hunters deciding to focus on containing the douhmel (they didn’t know about haerycs, or didn’t think he was one, so thought he’d just die in the woods after the injuries). Kalhicel travelled far, became lost, and didn’t know where he was or how to get back home. He kept moving, stayed as inconspicuous as he could, and never stopped. But he grew tired of travel, of confusion, of fear. He decided to stay mobile but only in a certain area, hunkering down for a bit then moving as years passed. Over this time, he slowly thought through his dependence on his family, and started to gain a sense of self and direction again. When he was gaining back his confidence and shedding his obligation to the family, curious people started to watch and converse with him. The haeryc became interested in the changed world now that he had interacted with the people, and he would talk and let them tag along as he wound his way through the same cluster of towns. Over time, they began to think of him as a spiritual teacher, and as they noticed his immortality, started to worship him as more than the leader of a group of travelers. Word spread, and new people would come to see and meet him, and the group grew and became more focused on pleasing this deity on earth. He let them believe this and do whatever they wanted. This was when he met his partner; this new member solidified the cult as the haeryc simply walked as he had always done and let it happen. He had no interest in any of these followers or their beliefs, but it was easier to get food with servants throwing themselves at him.

He wasn’t sure what he really wanted in his endless life, but he did feel a little semblance of contentment in being surrounded by people who relied on him like in the past- though he wasn't aware of those feelings growing within him.
