The Ever-Changing

Age:
21
Key Words:

Theme:

“Oh, that? Wore it once for a ball but it went out of fashion immediately afterward so.”

Alexa is young and impressionable, unsure of who she is and what she wants out of life aside from being free of her parents’ influence. She’s driven but often unfocused, easily derailed and sidetracked by less-important tasks; she isn’t much for long-term or multi-step goals because of this. There is a kind of youthful charm and energy to her as she’s all but forced herself to hang onto a bright outlook, telling herself that the negativity of the current situation doesn’t mean the future will be as bad.

She has a tendency of reinventing herself based on who she’s around and the situation that she’s in, which is how she’s gone from dutiful daughter to practiced partier to striving seductress. While she appreciates help and pointers, the blonde’s never taken well to taking orders from anyone, and others trying to tell her what to do tends to bring out her rebellious streak. This is both a plus and a minus for her, as that streak is why she doesn’t let what anyone says convince her there’s something she can’t do. Only she knows what she can and cannot do, no matter what anyone else thinks. That makes her come across as stubborn and hardheaded sometimes, but she prefers to think of it as independent.

Making friends comes relatively easy to her, as does finding those who would want something more, but Alexa doesn’t have much interest in anything romantic after how badly she was burned before. The wrong touch at the wrong time brings up memories of what she endured before, and turns her into a version of herself that she doesn’t like: someone timid and afraid, uncertain and shaky. Maybe one day, once she’s somewhat healed, her thoughts on the matter will change but for now she knows she’s better off on her own.

Background

Alexa has spent her life trying to get herself out of her parents' shadows: the daughter of a prominent merchant and a talented seamstress, people expected her to be as smart, capable, as both her mother and father were. They're both devoted people, both to their family and their work, and they put in countless hours to ensure that the girl wanted for nothing. The most exotic foods, the fanciest dresses, lessons from the best teachers in the kingdom...nothing was beyond her reach, always brought straight into her hand for the right amount of coin.

But the more she explored and tried to discover who she was, the more her parents voiced their desire to keep her as she'd been. They always saw her as a child, refusing to see her as a teenager, a young adult, a woman. She was taught about the world, but expected to not be a part of it. She learned about people, but had to remain distant. She knew a little about a lot of things, enough for her to feel smart without being particularly good at any one thing.

And she was sick of it.

The day she turned sixteen, Alexa left, taking the coin that had been saved as her dowry to pay her way. She didn't do as some might have, instead leaving in the morning after having a genuine conversation with her parents; they hadn't budged on their wants of her, so she didn't budge from her plan. When things didn't go the way she'd wanted and the rather sheltered girl found herself to be used and abused by the world outside of her parents' safety net, she came home.

Everything was different when she returned. Understandably upset by her running away and taking her marriage coin, her parents immediately demanded that her partying end and she take up a job to repay what she had blown in exchange for their help. Seeing no options, the blonde did as asked and began to chip away at her debt while learning how to be responsible for herself moreso than she'd been before.

It was fine, until they heard about Will and how actions he took had permanently changed her. Her father said that she'd chosen to give that piece of herself away as part of her rebelling against his and her mother's influence, completely ignoring Alexa's insistence that it hadn't been her choice. It had been forced upon her, and her parents’ utter disregard for her side of the story once again showed her that she was expected to be nothing but a showpiece, something fashioned to reflect positively on them.

This time, when she left, she didn’t attempt to talk to them. The girl left the money she owed in a piece of parchment, which bore a letter expressing how upset she was at how things had to end. Her parents wouldn’t understand and would surely disapprove yet again, so she left them no way to trace her.

Upon reaching Cradia, Alexa took up a job at one of the taverns as it was the easiest place for her to get hired. Being young and relatively pretty were strong points for her, and the owner appreciated having another set of hands on deck during the night shifts when it was busiest. This was where she met a rather insane redhead who was equally impressive and scary: her skill lay in swindling the men who frequented the bar, disarming them and charming her way into their wallets.

It was exactly the kind of thing her parents would hate to know she was doing, which was precisely why she set about picking up the trade from Sparky. Though she’s been working on it for a while, her track record is nowhere near as impressive as the redhead’s, but her flirting skills are always improving. In the meantime, the blonde is meeting new people and forming connections of her own that are completely separate from anything regarding her parents.

Quotes

  • “How do you expect me to stay here and do nothing but lessons? When you won’t even let me continue with the things I like, that I’m good at? As soon as I was getting confident with a harp, you made me quit!”
  • “I’m far enough away that no one’s heard of the Christansens. Or the ones they know are others who aren’t my family. I did it. I finally did it.”
  • “It’s not my fault that I wasn’t raised to know the value of a gold coin. It was your decision to keep me this sheltered, now live with it.”
  • “Thanks for pointing out that I flinch when people move suddenly. Appreciate knowing that, it’s something I can be self-conscious of.”
