Born as the only child to Dr. Chi Nguyễn and U.S Navy Captain Douglas Raneri, Alex Nguyễn Raneri was born and initially raised in the coastal town of Corpus Christi, Texas, USA. A curious child, Alex proved to be a decent student, absorbing whatever information she could as best she could under the circumstances. Those circumstances being, of course, the fact that sedentary would be in no way close to describing her life. From Navy base to Navy base, Alex and her family moved around, settling in for a few months before it would be time to ship along to some new location. To say nothing about the disappearances of her parents from her lives. From month long deployments at sea for her father or research trips and summits and talks for her mother Alex grew to have a few fairly constant people in her life. Her, now late, grandfather Richard Raneri and her older cousins Scott and Meinhard.
While it wasn't often that Richard would be called on it still happened. Be it late nights at work or mountains of paperwork sometimes Alex's parents just didn't have time for her to which her grandfather would be the main familial contact. Richard would often recount for Alex everything from (sanitized) war stories to talks about aliens and government conspiracies to simple day-to-day affairs whenever he would be the one to watch over her for a week or two at a time. However, eventually Richard passed away of natural causes and her parents were forced to find someone else to look after her when they were away. Namely her cousins.
Still a bit disheartened by the loss of her grandfather, Alex soon found something that she didn't know she needed when she was sent out to California to stay with her cousins; friend her age. It was a bit of work, to say the least, for Meinhard to enroll her locally so she could continue her education but it was managed all the same and soon Alex found herself going to a school, the same school day-in-and-day-out, for a full year and a half rather than just a few months. With this ability to settle down and finally get to know the people around her she met various people who would end up being friends to this day. From her best friend, Tara, and their mutual friends Jack and Maxx.
Alex wouldn't be able to stay forever, unfortunately, eventually she was sent back to live with her parents both as they returned home for longer periods of time as well as the declining health of her older cousin. She was able to stay in contact with both her friend and her cousin Scott and, while seeing how everything was affecting the latter, made a promise to herself to be the person that everyone could turn to to be a friendly face and a reassuring presence to everyone she could. While helping Scott through a rather tough time in his life, her parents, seeing that as well as the friends she made while staying with him made her an offer when she turned eighteen. An offer that was a chance to live with her older cousin again so long as she went to school locally and still got her degree.
Needless to say she jumped on that opportunity as soon as it came her way. Flying out, moving in with Scott and his new pet pig Tuskers, Alex is currently enrolled at a local community college and working towards a degree that might land her a dream job she has wanted since she was a child; a chance to work at the SETI institute. Reestablishing contact with her old friends as well as taking a job that she absolutely won't tell her parents about, to help pay for things both her own and Scott's in between the checks sent his way from her parents to support the two of them, Alex is settling in as best she can to a life that she is rather enjoying even if it can be a little boring and same-y sometimes.
