Personality

Kyouya has an unpleasant personality. Being outwardly cold, he is overly rude to strangers, frequenting to sarcasm and insults. For the most part, he craves solitude, and only lashes out if provoked.

He is easy to irritate and experiences anger strongly and frequently. While he has the self-control to keep from being as destructive, he still has destructive thoughts and desires. Often he feels that there's no way to escape these negative feelings, and they don't go away naturally for nearly the length of an entire day. The only way he knows to get rid of his anger immediately is to express his aggression. In addition, he has the bitterness to hold grudges forever.

Depression and other mental illneses have dulled his ability to experience joy, so he doesn't express it as a result. He finds little reason to laugh or smile, so seeing him do either one is an extreme rarity. Often, he hides his mouth when smiling, and stifles laughter to maintain his intimidating persona. Most people have only seen him laugh or smile sarcastically, out of rage, or as a way to cope with adrenaline. He defaults to boredom and most of his hobbies are low energy.

Kyouya is a very confident and graceful person, viewing himself as superior to other people in every way that matters to him; intelligence, looks, poise, taste, etc. His poise tends to make him appear more beautiful or attractive than he actually is, causing any admirers he may have to consider him cool and mysterious.

Being generally fearless, he is unafraid to challenge even the strongest of people in order to assert his dominance. He often snaps at people for not treating him like royalty (things like "don't address me without permission", "who said you could speak to me", etc), although this is more as a way of putting people off on purpose than anything actual. He hates to be touched without permission and may have a knee-jerk reaction to it.

With people he actually likes, his rudeness transforms into teasing; it can seem identical to outsiders, but his friends/lovers can tell the difference between a genuine "go fuck yourself" and a joking one. With people that dislike this behavior, even as a joke, he abstains entirely. He values the desires and preferences of people he likes and wants to ensure they remain comfortable, even if it often feels annoying or exhausting for him.

Kyouya struggles to resist the urge to be mean to people he considers "weak". This can be people who visibly lack confidence, those with anxiety, people who are easily triggered and respond by crying or otherwise breaking down, etc. He hates being faced with people who are distressed, afraid, anxious, etc, as he feels he can't relate to such things and deeply wants to say to just shut up and get over it, even when he knows it isn't reasonable. When these people end up being his friends, he finds himself at a loss, as he doesn't want to damage his relationships but can't stop feeling annoyed or exhausted with these perceived weaknesses when they make themselves known.

Backstory

Kyouya is the oldest adopted son of a wealthy Japanese family. Alongside his twin brother, Kyou, he lived in Aoyama, Tokyo, for most of his life. His parents were cold, unfeeling people only concerned with their sons' abilities as the future heirs to their company, a role neither of them were ever interested in.

In elementary school, Kyouya was a bratty child that refused to play well with others or accept the concept of "sharing". He didn't make any friends, and the teachers weren't fond of having to deal with him, constantly in trouble for hurting the other children, destroying things, and refusing to follow orders. In the process, his brother ended up getting bullied for his actions, due to being an easier target.

In junior high school, Kyouya was a notorious delinquent involved in a lot of fights and vandalism. This awakened his sadomasochistic side, which eventually caused him to be avidly avoided by other like-minded teens who thought he went way too far; they wanted to let off some steam, and he came across as someone with a genuine lust for blood, be it his or someone else's.

This awful behavior was enough for his school to threaten to kick him out, prompting his parents, who previously were too busy to pay attention to what he was doing, to get involved. While his grades weren't suffering (they were perfect, actually), the damage he was causing went over the line. His parents paid top dollar to put him in therapy, though they didn't believe in the practice at all and only wanted a diagnosis to get him medicated as soon as possible. He was diagnosed with depression, narcissism, and antisocial personality disorder, and put on antipsychotics and antidepressants. These helped to stabilize, but not eliminate, his behavorial issues, though the real reason he ended up giving up his delinquency was because it became too much trouble to bother anymore.

His high school career was a complete daze for him. Studies were never an issue, but he wasn't able to form closes relationships and spent most of his time outside of his studies working on his hobbies. All of his money was spent on paint, canvases, notebooks, and other special tools for artwork and writing, of which he wrote primarily short horror stories. This was all he cared about. He never looked to the future, only focusing on what he was currently doing, and as such never planned for what career he would have, what university he would attend, where he would live, any of that. Spending time on his hobbies, forever, was all he wanted.

Now that he was far away from his reputation in junior high, a new reputation formed for him as a highly intelligent, cool, mysterious boy. Though his appeal was limited to more eccentric people, he still received several attempts from others to build a friendship, all of which he walked away from without even trying. In his second year, a girl hand-delivered him a love letter, which he turned down without ever even taking it out of her hand. This caused his reputation to change; people thought of him as cold, yet intrigue remained.

However, not long after, another student confessed to him in private, except this time, it was a male student. Though Kyouya had zero romantic interest in him, not even knowing his name or ever having seen him before, Kyouya responded by asking him if he wanted to fuck, and they went at it immediately in an empty classroom. The thrill was addicting, and he found a way to channel his sadomasochism into a different outlet, becoming obsessed similarly to his art and literature based hobbies. They didn't remain together for very long, since Kyouya had no feelings and the other boy could tell, but Kyouya easily moved on, seeking out other male partners to practice his newfound hobby on.

After graduating, Kyouya dipped, taking a large sum of money from his parents and retreating to a town in Hokkaido, where his parents weren't aware of his location. He didn't bother waiting around to see how they would react and never heard from them again. His newfound residence was declared haunted. It was located fifteen minutes outside town with no neighbors. His life was listless and dull; doing the same things over and over with very little variation. His novels were being published under a penname, generating a decent amount of income, but its his paintings that were the real allure, being presented in upscale galleries and sold at high sums to eccentric millionaires. On occassion, he would visit the showings to soak in the praise and get mildly drunk—a habit that carried into the rest of his life. Never quite on the verge of addiction, but he often turned to getting blackout drunk to escape feelings of ennui. He'd stopped renewing his medication entirely, and now sank deeply into a depression, of which he thought about suicide multiple times daily, making several futile attempts (mostly half-assed, unsure if this was what he really wanted to do) which no one but him ever knew about.

During one particular attempt, he went into town in the rain, his backup plan if he chickened out being that he would let himself get sick (something that was very easy for him, due to a weak immune system) and then not take care of himself. The town was empty at that hour, on the peak of daylight, but he came across one person that stopped to talk with him. They hit it off right away, much to Kyouya's surprise; he wasn't used to people who behave in such a way, treating him like an old friend with a bright, glowing smile and kind words. They easily wasted away several hours just talking, and once shops started opening, the man, whose name is Kaname, invited Kyouya to go order breakfast at a local café.

From there, they fell for each other and started dating. It was obvious from the start that Kaname was interested in him, though Kyouya wasn't sure what he was doing and didn't want a repeat of old, purely-sexual relationships, so it took a few months of subtextually-romantic friendship before they became official. The relationship was extremely slow and clunky at the start, before Kyouya opened up and admitted he didn't know what to do, leading Kaname, a hopeless romantic, to guide him through it.

After a job offer for Kaname requiring him to go overseas, the two move out together, with Kyouya purchasing a house for them to cohabitate together. They'd already spent lots of time staying at each other's houses for days or weeks at a time, as though their residences belonged to both of them, and not just one of them. After emigrating to Montreal, Canada, Kaname convinced Kyouya to pursue therapy, though he attends sessions infrequently.

Three years into their relationship, Kaname took him out on an elaborate date that he proposed at the end of, leading to the first time Kyouya had ever cried for a positive reason. They wed in Lyon, France, where Kaname was born and raised, allowing Kyouya to meet Kaname's family despite them not being invited to the wedding. The same applied to Kyouya's family, with the exception of his brother, who had emigrated to live closer to him after graduating from university.
