Mim and Rei met their first year of college. Mim has always been musically talented, but was  reserved and practical, and went to college for engineering, which satisfied his parents. Rei had no sense of practicality, however, and as soon as they found out Mim could play an instrument he insisted they form a band. Rei and Mim played together casually for a significant amount of time, becoming close and beginning to date. They began to take off and do shows that captivated the audience. Mim never expected this to actually take off, and found himself overwhelmed by trying to manage school and the band. Rei convinces Mim to quit college and elope with them, which results in Mim falling out with his family.  The two decide their music need something more, and look for another member. They find this is Octavia, who wins over Rei with her beauty and charm, and Mim with her immense talent and range. The three form Smokebound, and take off significantly.  The band is on tour when Mim finds out Rei and Octavia had been sleeping together. Mim agrees to finish the tour with them because of contractual obligation, but breaks up the band and divorces Rei as soon as the tour is over.
In the good end, after a long battle with his mental health, Mim takes the money he's made and goes back to college, and fixes things with his family. He swears off music for a long time when Rei goes solo. Eventually, he sees Rei again and Rei sincerely apologizes, and encourages Mim to get back into music just as a hobby. The two may or may not get back together eventually, but they both take the time to become better and actualized people apart from each other before anything happens.  

In the apocalypse AU, Mim becomes Reis eternal minion under his magical influence, and serves him long after he passes and his body begins to rot away.
