Rei was born with exceptional magical aptitude, and often boasted and bragged about their magic powers to their peers as a child, which lead to them being popular, but not well-liked. Showing off their power too much lead to them being taken into The Facility to be raised as a core subject. Their parents objected greatly, but were forced to cut all ties with their child when they were deemed too dangerous to be released. Reis powers made then too difficult to subdue in this grief, and the facility had to wipe reis parents and childhood from their mind to continue. Rei has minor telekinetic and telepathic powers, but their greatest power is the ability to control emotions and minds. At first they could only do this through sound waves, but they were augmented to omit a purple smoke that increases this ability and effects even people who cannot hear them.
Rei telepathically communicated with subject 8 frequently, and they told them about the outside world and basically parented them. Subject 8 would protect rei from extreme trials, and would often be punished harshly for it.  When it came time for the subjects to rebel and escape the facility, Rei was on the frontlines. They were faced off against Timenthurus, who had beaten them many times, and was close to killing them. Subject 8 jumped in to protect Rei, and was killed in the process. Rei killed Timenthurus to avenge Subject 8, but they were already dead.

 The four remaining core subjects were shaken, broke, and battle-worn, but they were free.  Strife was the only one of them with experience and memories of the world outside of the facility, and quickly used his powers and knowledge to get into organized crime, making large sums of money for the freed subjects to sustain off of.
Rei, who was young and had no formal knowledge of the world, wanted so badly to experience a normal life. Strife felt bad for them, being stripped of their chance at adulthood, and had their records faked so they could enroll in college. Rei moved away from the other subjects at this time to go to school.
At college, Rei was roommates with Mim. Rei was always friendly and involved with everyone, determined to make friends and have as many different experiences as possible. However, Mim was very reserved and withdrawn, and heavily thrown into his studies. Rei, who had a nearly perfect memory and extreme intelligence, never really needed to study and constantly encouraged Mim to hang out instead, but Mim never really opened up to Rei. This was until Rei found Mim playing guitar, and baring his soul through music, and this spoke deeply to Rei. Rei insisted they form a band, and Mim went along hesitantly and only wanted to play casually. However, with Reis powers of mental influence, especially through sound, they were unable to help drawing a crowd and making it big. Rei convinced Mim that they should quit school, get married, and do music full time, and Mim went along with Reis grandiose whims, because it is very hard to refuse anything Rei asks, whether they are trying to use their power or not.

The two decide their music need something more, and look for another member. They find this is Octavia, who wins over Rei with her beauty and charm, and Mim with her immense talent and range. The three form Smokebound, and take off significantly.  The band is on tour when Mim finds out Rei and Octavia had been sleeping together. Mim agrees to finish the tour with them because of contractual obligation, but breaks up the band and divorces Rei as soon as the tour is over.

While Rei and Mim were a married couple before meeting Octavia, Rei had told her they were in an open relationship, and the two had fooled around a few times. Considering how charismatic and flirtatious rei is, it seemed natural to think that he slept with a variety of people and that Mim condoned it. Octavia saw sexual intimacy as a tool to control people, so she thought that this was part of how rei had so many fans. However, this was reis first time sleeping with someone besides Mim since they had gotten married. After frankly disappointing sex, Octavia made no effort to either hide nor broadcast their now sexual relationship. Considering they made a habit of sleeping together, rei had assumed that they had mutual romantic feelings for each other, when it was just him. When Mim found out and nearly cancelled their tour, breaking up the band and divorcing rei, she found out they were NOT in an open relationship.

 Rei sought comfort in his relationship with Octavia, who was incredibly upset that she had actually been being used to cheat with and also bamboozled that rei actually thought they were dating. She made it a point to ruin Rei's career. She continued to gain popularity as a celebrity gossip headline and soon joined a new band where her popularity only increased from there. Distraught at losing Mim to their own stupid mistakes, Rei heads back home to stay with Strife, Saffire, and Mal-saf.
In the good end, Rei becomes a solo artist and makes it big. Octavia tries to sabotage his career by publicizing why the band broke up, but their feud only gets Rei a bigger following. Rei makes a career of being a problematic fav. However, they do one day meet Mim again and apologize properly, and encourage Mim to get back into music.
In the apocalypse end, Rei convinces Saffire and Strife that this world is cruel and unjust, and Strife organizes an event for Saffire to unleash her power and claim this world for destruction. Rei uses their power amplified by Saffire to infect the minds and deteriorate the bodies of people all over the world.
