Quailstar's life had a rocky start. When she was just a Kit, her father Bouldermane was killed protecting the Nursery from a badger. Because of this, Quailstar has no memories with her father except for when he gave her a life, which bothers her deeply.

Creameyes, Quailstar's mother, heavily favored her son, Dovekit, because of this. Quailkit didn't completely mind because she got to hand out with her best friends, Acidkit, Honeykit, Featherkit, and Ganderkit.

But when Acidkit and Honeykit's father, Milkyway, left SummitClan, her relationship with Acidkit became rocky. He pushed all of his friends away, and this behavior continued into their Apprenticeship.

Quailpaw and Honeypaw still remained close friends, and despite being in denial, Quailpaw was falling deeply in love with her. Creameyes didn't accept "those kinds of cats," and so Quailpaw thought she was just imagining these feelings. But as they grew, so did the feelings.

Quailpaw tried to confess that she was in love with Honeypaw to her mother. Creameyes tried to tell her it was just a faze, and the Medicine Cat Crabface would set her straight (literally.) 

After getting in a heavy argument, Creameyes made the decision that she didn't want to "live somewhere where such disgusting lifestyles are accepted." Creameyes abandoned SummitClan, leaving behind both Quailpaw and Dovepaw.

Quailpaw, reasonably, was devastated. Her mother was gone forever, and now her brother hated her guts. She developed severe separation anxiety, becoming very clingy to Honeypaw. Luckily, Honeypaw didn't mind Quailpaw depending on her so much.

After what seemed like forever, the time for Quailpaw to become a Warrior came. All of her colleagues received their names normally, but when Rubblestar got to her, he hesitated. Unbeknownst to the Clan, he was having a vision from StarClan; survival of the Summit will depend on a quail's song. Not speaking of the vision to anyone, Rubblestar named Quailpaw; Quailsong.

Later that night, Quailsong and the now Honeydew decided to go out into the forest. Quailsong had set up something for Honeydew; a hollow tree full daisies and a plan to confess her feelings. After struggling to build up the courage, Quailpaw finally got enough confidence to tell Honeydew just how much she loved her. The feelings were mutual, and the two she-cats shared a tender kiss.

Just a few moons later, while on patrol, Quailsong is attacked by a young cougar. The she-cat is no match for it as she pathetically tries to fight back. The cougar clawed her arm and ripped off her tail, playing with it like it was a dog's chew toy. Eventually, after hearing about what had happened from Shydart, Honeydew rushed to Quailsong's aide. She scared off the cougar, and along with some cats Bearstar had sent, they brought Quailsong to camp.

Quailsong struggled with her recovery not just physically, but mentally as well. She said some harsh words to Honeydew, taking out her anger on cats around her. The two made up however, and actually made their relationship official soon after.

Quailsong began physical therapy with Greymint, and it was massively successful. In just a moon, Quailsong was able to walk on her own without assistance. 

Despite regaining her ability to walk, Quailsong still didn't feel happy. She felt like she wasn't good enough for Honeydew, or any of her Clan for that matter. Her nightmares worsened, with a Dark Forest cat named Shroombreath taunting her. Her mother leaving, her brother's hate, the cougar attack; he said it was all her fault. He made her think that.. that Honeydew didn't love her anymore.

Quailsong felt like she would never be happy, and that feeling pushed her to attempt suicide. Quailsong wouldn't have been alive to see another day if a patrol hadn't just happened to pass by her.

Honeydew noticed Quailsong's deep unhappiness, and along with her friend Featherleaf, she held an intervention for Quailsong. Honeydew tearfully tried to tell Quailsong about how much she had to live for, but it was too much for the grey she-cat.

Quailsong tried to run away from Honeydew, but Honeydew accidentally gave Quailsong a gash trying to hold her back. Quailsong still ran away, but ended up passing out and being found by a pitch-black tom.

When Quailsong regained consciousness, she was in said tom's cave. The cat introduced himself as Crag, which was short for Crag of Which Eagle Lands. He claimed that the psychic powers he gained from his mother sent him here. When Quailsong inquired more, Crag finally told her that SummitClan was destined to be slaughtered by rockfall if she didn't do what he said.
