Travel Habits

Occasional. Anise has had several post transfers, moving every few years. However, she is not intended to move posts again for a rather long time now that she's been stationed as a Guild Master.

Substance Usage

Anise abhors any and all unhealthy substances. Her father would smoke several packs of cigarettes each day, carrying a strong stench with him, on his belongings, and around the home. Having put his health on the decline, Anise had chosen to avoid smoking and even detests others' smoking habits. In addition, she dislikes the taste of alcohol and finds drunkenness unpleasant. She may have a small glass on a special occasion, but that is the extent of her drinking habits. Any other substance is simply off the table.

None. She is physically fit and has no diseases or disabilities.

Mental Ailments

In the years following the witnessing of her father's murder, Anise developed persistent depressive disorder, also known as dysthymia and formerly known as a "depressive personality." This disorder is characterized by the same cognitive and physical problems as depression, but with longer-lasting symptoms. More information on this disorder can be found here. She rarely addresses her condition and doesn't have the time to attend therapy. Instead, she opts for daily medication and a therapeutic pet to keep her symptoms at bay. When neglecting to take her medicine or while it's setting in, Anise most prominently experiences lethargy and irritability.

Her skin is fair and soft to the touch. She has no notable freckles, moles, or birthmarks and is relatively unscarred.

Hair

Although originally a chestnut brown, Anise’s hair has been bleached blonde. Her brown roots are visible wherever her hair is parted. It’s about shoulder length and is often worn down in a formal fashion. However, it isn't uncommon for her to pull her hair back into a ponytail or pin it up depending on the occasion.

Anise's eyes are a deep, solid brown.

Her features are very soft and rounded, giving off a delicate appearance. She has a youthful face with fair features.

Anise has a small bust, equally small hips, and a less-defined waist, giving her a rectangular body shape. Though she is petite in size, she is physically fit and well-toned, with a surprising amount of muscle on her.

Clothing & Accessories

Anise favors dresses, skirts, and gowns. Her way of dress is very feminine, and she often dresses in favor of formality over comfort. She usually wears soft colors that are easy on the eyes, such as pinks, whites, and yellows, though occasionally she will opt for a more bold look. Oftentimes, her girlish outfits appear inappropriate, given her line of work and the authoratative role she plays. She simply doesn't care and enjoys dressing however she feels like dressing.

As far as accessories go, she will wear various headpieces and jewelry to go with her outfit. Most importantly, though, she always has a purse on her person. She favors her large, cream-colored shoulder bag. Inside are two smaller, matching bags. One acts as a wallet, and the other, a makeup bag. Within the bag are numerous items of miscellaneous usage which, though generally organized, are loosely strewn about. Most notably, within her shoulder bag is a notepad and pen, pepper spray, and a pocket sized flask filled with water and small flakes of silver.

Tattoos

On her right hand, Anise has a small snake tattoo that is simplistic in design, accompanied by three dots nearby its head. As soon as she was legally able, she got the tattoo to remember her brother by, whom she had to cut off all ties with many years ago.

Scars

Aside from small cuts and scars that come from growing up, she has only one noteworthy scar, which is on the right side of her abdomen. It is a long, thin cut that runs vertically down her side. The scar has faded over the years, making it easy to overlook lest one is actively studying her body. She got it when being attacked by her brother during a full moon many years ago.

Anise Pemperton is the current acting Guild Master of the Vincent City outpost, following the disappearance of Charles Orleans. She had joined the Guild midway through high school and was trained to be as versatile as possible, as is done with all student-aged recruits. After proving to be a skilled informant and promising leader, she was stationed at her current outpost to test her capabilities in a controlled, low-activity environment.

Recently, however, there has been an influx of demonic activity in the area and a sudden presence of high-tier demons. Unbeknownst to the Guild, Vincent City is located nearby a portal between worlds. Anise's small leadership position has unknowingly been placed at the epicenter of a demon uprising. With few new agents coming in and a dire threat at her doorstep, Anise is now in control of the most significant, least accommodated Guild post. Whether or not the demons' efforts will be successful depends on the actions of this dinky little group in the middle of nowhere.

Organized

She has a very organized lifestyle. Everything is in as much order as she can keep it, and although she has the tendency to organize things in some abstract and somewhat unnecessary ways, she always knows where everything is. This organization keeps her space neat, clean, and proper.

Analytical

She analyzes her surroundings quite often and is very knowledgeable of said things. She takes the time to analyze people as well, gaining a general understanding of a person merely by watching their actions. She studies things she doesn’t understand and explores the unknown, as well.

Polite

She never goes out of her way to be rude. She remains honest and uses her manners more so than anything else. She acknowledges people rather than ignoring them, and she uses her pleases and thank yous as necessary. She allows people to speak without interruption, and she keeps the comfort of others in mind. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. That’s exactly what she’s like. She may be quirky and awkward, but when professionalism is needed, Anise becomes serious in a matter of seconds. She can always handle a job and push aside her worries. Essentially, when necessary, she drowns out the social interaction and gets straight to the point.

To put it simply, she is a very blunt person who is very honest and upfront with her opinions. She never really sugar coats the reality of the situation. This makes her trustworthy, though she can also comes off as rude, depending on the person.

She drifts off a lot and keeps her innermost thoughts to herself. She is almost always disconnected from the world, keeping her head in the clouds and refraining from sharing her ideas with other people. An extreme introvert, no one seems to know what exactly is going on inside that head of hers. Only that she is thinking or lost in thought.

Pragmatic

She doesn’t follow ideas or theories. Rather, she relies on facts and statistics, as well as logic to lead her. She’s very to-the-book, and isn’t idealistic in any sense. Her expectations are down to earth, and unless some logos is applied to an idea pitch, she probably won’t be buying it.

Scatterbrained

Her mind wanders all over the place, especially when under stress. She can jump from one idea to the next and then suddenly forget what she had been doing. She’s a tad forgetful, too, and it can be hard to follow everything she is saying and doing.

Based on appearance alone, she creates a bright and cheerful aura wherever she goes. However, this is offset by her quirky demeanor and social interactions. Typically, she is reserved and her attitude is quite asocial and to herself. She is polite and optimistic, although by no means is she outgoing. This attitude changes, though, in the face of danger and/or urgency. In such cases, she becomes much more assertive and serious, putting aside social nuances.

Expression

With a delicate face, wide eyes, and defined facial expressions, it isn’t hard to read how she is feeling. A common expression of hers would be the pursing of her lips, which she does in thought, when confused or surprised, or simply during awkward silences. Her left eyebrow begins to twitch uncontrollably when upset, and her eyes easily depict her innermost emotions. She has difficulties expressing her feelings verbally or deliberately, but her face says it all for her.

Speech

Anise annunciates her words very clearly and confidently. It is easy to speak over her, however, as she is soft-spoken and generally avoids raising her voice or interrupting others. She has a west coast accent, and her pitch is a bit lighter and softer than most. It isn’t overwhelmingly high pitched, but it gives off a soft tone that’s easy on the ears of those listening.

Laugh

The best way to describe her laugh would be to say that it’s similar to a modest giggle. She doesn’t laugh very often, and when she does, she covers her smile and breaks eye contact. She has a variety of laughter, of course, depending on the reasoning for her amusement. The low giggle would simply be considered her most genuine.

Swears?

In order to remain as professional as possible, Anise tends to avoid using swear words. In conversation, she sees them as empty filler words as opposed to an addition to speech. That said, she is not offended by others' usage of foul language, nor would she be embarrassed if she happens to swear in front of others.

Quirks

With her scatterbrained nature, it isn't uncommon for her to drift off mid-sentence to gather her thoughts or ponder about something she suddenly realized. Sometimes, it even goes so far as abruptly ending the conversation entirely after thinking a moment then turning to wander away.

Reading

When looking to escape her thoughts, Anise stuffs her nose in a book and drifts into another world -- one where life is much more mundane and simple. She dislikes action and fantasy genres as, believe it or not, she would like to explore places without so much going on. She favors reading romantic fiction, as she is quite the hopeless romantic. Anise also enjoys delving into mythological nonfiction. Though it has many fantasy elements, it isn't so much the magic that captures her, but rather the stories and creatures. She likes to interpret the stories into philosophies of her own while cross-examining its characters with her own knowledge.

Playing Piano

As a child, Anise took piano lessons. She took these lessons right up until her recruitment into the Guild. She's no Mozart, though she has enough talent to compose her own music if she felt particularly inspired. To Anise, the piano is a form of expression. It's something that can convey emotions she struggles to communicate aloud. She plays passionately from time to time, though she's sheepish about others listening in.

Listening to Music

Her musical hobbies extend beyond performing. Anise likes to listen to music just as much as she likes to play it. Filling the air with noise makes it easier to take her mind off of troubling things, and what better noise than the pleasant sound of classical instruments? Classical music is her favorite, as it's relaxing and mostly lyric-free. That said, she will also find herself singing along to hit pop songs when alone in her car or working out to some angsty rock music. Music helps her work out her feelings.

Inside her purse, she carries a flask of holy water alongside a Guild-issued pistol, which are concealed within their own pocket, separate from the rest of her belongings. She also has some pepper spray in her purse's main pocket in case of non-demonic emergencies.

Powers / Skills

After years of neglecting to practice and keep her combat skills sharp, Anise has not retained any physical skills. Her prowess instead lies in her wit.

Strategy

Anise aims to stay out of combat entirely, avoiding direct contact and fleeing when possible. If impossible, she will most likely try to outsmart her opponent rather than overpower them.

Training

Basic at best. Although she went through the Guild's student trainee program, which focuses on creating versatile agents, she excelled as an informant rather than a field agent. Over her years enlisted as an informant, her combat skills dwindled. However, just recently she began working on this with one of the Guildmates, Xavier.

Experience

She has had a couple run-ins with demons from time to time, and she has had to deal with her brother on many occasions, but such experience hasn’t aided her in the long run.

Advantage

She is quick on her feet and a clever thinker, using analysis and perception to her benefit.

Drawback

She’s weak and inexperienced, making her an easy opponent based solely on brute strength.

Earn Respect

As a young and generally inexperienced Guild Master, it's no surprise that the agents under her show very little for respect. Anise is aiming to prove herself not only to her own post, but to the higher ups as well. She wants to show everyone that the decision to place their trust in her was the right one.

Gain Understanding

Half-demons are a species that Anise has personal experience with. Even so, she doesn't understand them very well. Her brother was a single individual, and even he isn't completely understood by her. Anise is working on gaining a better understanding of their species, especially after mishandling two individuals, permanently tarnishing their relationships.

Make Reform

Being in a position of power gives Anise many responsibilities. However, it also gives her the opportunity to make necessary changes for the greater good. She has already (admittedly begrudgingly) allowed a controversial ally to be loosely affiliated with their ranks. Her hope is to revolutionize the system that her fellow demon hunters operate on.

Peace

More than anything, Anise dreams of a world without conflict between demonkind and humankind. Whether that means eliminating the enemy or coming to a formal agreement, she isn't certain. All she knows is that, end-game, she wants the conflict to end.

Family Reunion

After being separated from her family for nearly a decade, Anise dreams of seeing her mother and brother again. Their separation is primarily her own fault. She was advised to cut ties with her brother, but even then, she never called home. Not once did she send a letter or so much as a postcard. Perhaps that's the reason why she wants to reunite so desperately: guilt.

Romance

Anise is a hopeless romantic. She has been in several relationships throughout her life. Some were more successful than others, but ultimately they all came to an end. She has had more success dating within the Guild, as there is less secrecy, but it also leads to awkward work situations and inevitable post changes. All Anise wants is a solid, long-lasting relationship -- and maybe, if she's really lucky, love.

Her Family

Anise is quite a secretive person, but there is nothing she keeps to herself more than her family. There are several reasons for this. First, her half-brother is a half-demon that resulted from an affair between her father and a demon caregiver within the home and is therefore an enemy to the Guild. Second, the fact that she had a demon living with her family to begin with is difficult to explain. Third, the events surrounding her father's death (and therefore the reason she joined the Guild) is fairly traumatic. And finally, her complete negligence of their existence leaves her feeling guilty. To open up about her family is to open up a can of worms, and her telling anybody about it is a sign of complete trust.

Her Romantic (and Sex) Life

Though she doesn't make any effort to hide that she goes on dates, Anise's romantic history is long and arduous. She will talk vaguely about how "I did such-and-such with so-and-so once," but anything beyond PG retellings of one-off events is rarely spoken about. This is mostly for the sake of her former partners' privacy, but it's also simply embarrassing to (over)share something rather personal. She only shares the explicit details of her history with romantic partners who care to ask.

Her Work

Obviously, being a part of a secret organization means your work itself must be kept secret. She never tells anyone outside of the Guild about her work. If asked, she usually feigns working as a private investigator, a journalist, a government agent, or some other occupation that would appear logical given the circumstance. Usually, she brushes off the finer details of her work as classified and moves the conversation along.

Snakes

Anise's experiences with snakes have had a negative impact on her psyche. Her childhood caregiver and father's murderer was a demon serpent, and as such, her half-brother is a wereserpent. Putting the obvious fear of the demon serpent aside, Anise was once attacked by her brother one full moon night after he'd turned. Though she loves her brother dearly, she cannot shake the fear that resulted from her experience with him. Snakes disgust her, and they scare her to no end. She avoids generic snakes and becomes increasingly uncomfortable around them. Thankfully, she doesn't lose function when around them -- only her good mood.

Louise Pemperton mother

Prior to her husband’s death, Louise was a loving mother who cared for both Anise and her stepson, Chance. She was very sentimental and cherished every moment with her family. However, she grew distant and apathetic following Charlie’s death. She witnessed the events first hand and was lucky enough to be spared, though she was never the same and has never told the complete story of what had happened. She is still alive, and she spends her days alone in Anise’s childhood home, practically unresponsive and closed off to the rest of the world. She had turned down Guild recruitment and has sworn to secrecy, which isn't much of a task for her, considering she has been selectively mute since the incident.

Charlie Pemperton father

From the outside looking in, Charlie looked to be an average dad. He worked a 9 to 5, and despite this, spent a lot of time with his children. He loved to make jokes and have fun, although he was a frequent smoker. He had an affair with the live-in nanny, which resulted in Chance’s birth. Even after the affair, he held the family together all the way up until his murder in 2027, which left the Pempertons in shock.

Chance Pemperton half-brother

As a half-demon, Chance’s relationship with Anise has been complicated and solely based on trust. He was treated just like the rest of the family, and he was able to spend his childhood not-miserably. After Charlie’s death, though, and Anise’s entry into the Guild, he was left alone. Anise had to cut ties with him shortly after her recruitment, and the two haven’t spoken since.

Rakí Nzambi former caregiver

This demon is the mother of Chance and therefore a technical stepmother to Anise. She was initially a live-in nanny who, even after admitting to the Pempertons that she was a demon, was welcomed as a part of the family after promising she meant no harm. Anise not only fears and despises her stepmother, but she knows that Rakí is responsible for Charlie’s death and refuses to let go of her grudge.

Anise owns a male Fischer’s lovebird by the name of Mango. He’s constantly hungry and begging for food, but he’s therapeutic and presses for Anise to get out of bed in the morning, which she often finds difficult to will herself to do due to her poor state of mental health. He also acts as an outlet for Anise’s pent up thoughts, which she often expresses to the bird.

Officer Reod Live

Anise and Officer Live first met at a crime scene, where he showed her and Xavier to the body. He is was cute little man who acted rather quirky and awkward, quickly earning her affection. Reod asked her out to dinner, and she accepted. Though she can't be sure whether anything will work out between them, she's ever the optimist when it comes to new relationships. After all, Anise is a hopeless romantic.

Chance Pemperton

Her half-brother is the closest person to her. Anise feels he is the only person who can truly understand her, as she is the only one who understands him in return. He is her closest friend, even after losing all contact with him.

Xavier Wells

Even though the two of them only met just recently, Xavier has gotten closer to her than the other Guildmates. Perhaps it’s because she feels she can confide in him because of his trustworthy aura, or perhaps it’s a result of his stutter, which she finds cute and lovable. She can consider him a newfound friend. All she hopes is that it doesn’t get in the way of their business relationship.

Despite the inventor’s rebellious actions and potentially negative opinion of her, Anise doesn’t hold any negative feelings towards Rain. She thinks Rain is clever and heroic, albeit misguided. Anise hopes the two might one day set aside their differences and work more as a team.

Anise places a lot of trust in Clement and respects him. She even admires him to a degree. She feels he’s too standoffish to get to know on a personal level, but Clement is surely a good acquaintance of hers.

Daniel was a two-in-one package that came with Clement. Though he's missing now, and even before then he and Anise didn't have much time to get to know each other, Daniel was a resourceful agent who obeyed orders.

Anise hasn’t gotten to know Kiba too well, but she doesn’t dislike him in any way. He is a good agent, but she is put off by the knowledge of his exposure to demon blood. As a result, she doesn’t desire much further development in their relationship.

Having just joined the Guild, she doesn’t know much about him. However, from what she’s seen, she has a good feeling about him. His aura is welcoming, at the very least. Or, was. He hasn't been seen for a while now.

In spite of Edward’s peculiar behavior and seemingly careless antics, Anise has been trying to give him the benefit of the doubt. Being from England, she is hoping that once he adjusts, that his behavior will mellow out. Optimism is what’s keeping Mr. Sharpe from becoming an adversary.

After the weretiger quite literally ran into her, Anise got to know Revere over a cup of coffee while he had a charm on. With this, she has a preset and positive opinion of him. He seems to have been showing up everywhere, though, and Anise has a feeling he doesn’t think too fondly of her after finding out she is a part of the Guild.

The vampire and Anise have had only a few run-ins with each other, and within a short span of time, Anise has come to dislike him. Alen has an attitude that can only be considered rude, and he had embarrassed her upon his release from the holding cells. They aren’t on good terms, to say the least.

The ex-doctor walked into her life with next to no introduction and hardly any interaction to judge her character by. However, Marie quickly proved that she was more than simply strange. From the get-go, she expressed no respect for Anise's authority and claimed she is unfit for her role, which offended Anise. This has prompted harsh judgement from Anise, who now considers Marie unlikeable.

Now, Anise has only ever heard of Kriel, and the two have yet to meet. All she knows is he's a demon that has "befriended" Rain. After her experience with Rakí, she doesn't believe the genuineness of their relationship, and by default, she is not fond of Kriel.

Anise’s former nanny and father’s killer is easily her sworn enemy. She hopes to one day avenge her father and finish what the serpent demon started.
