The first time Lute met Malachite was when he bumped into her and Evan while they happened to be running the Labyrinth of the Lost at the same time. The oracle crystal there had been corrupted, so Evan had brought Malachite along to purify it. After exchanging greetings the group went their seperate ways in order to not increase the danger Evan and Malachite would face on the way to the oracle crystal, but that didn't mean they couldn't meet up at the entrance to the Labyrinth after. Evan introduced his friend, who had honestly been the first priest he'd run into once he'd found the corrupted oracle crystal, and the pair had just kind of hit it off from there. Lute was happy to get to know Evan's new friend, and Malachite settled pretty well into their friend group. Malachite pops in occasionally, and Evan likes to joke that she has a "Lute radar" when it comes to him being his trouble magnet self, as she has exceptionally good timing when it comes down to showing up when something's going on. They've gotten each other out of plenty of sticky situations over the time they've all known each other.

Malachite was there at Evan's funeral, and she and Lute leaned on each other for support in shared grief over their lost friend. While Malachite as The Author was partially responsible for Evan dying, she doesn't have full and total control over everyone and everything in her worlds. It was his own decisions and the state of the world as much as her writing that led to his death. And just because Evan is a "character" doesn't mean that he's any less a real person - or that she misses him any less. He was her friend. And now, he's gone.

• Malachite is actually The Author, the creator of this world. She often shows up with materials and reagents from Labyrinths, and gets along well with Lute and his friends. Malachite also participated in the fight to reseal Yverre as both a healer and a warrior.
• As for the way to destroy the blight, Avis and Freja found that out all on their own; Malachite didn't have anything to do with that. Heck, the only thing she did was make it so the possibility of killing Yverre was there - she herself didn't even know how, just that it was possible. It was Avis and Freja who discovered what that possibility actually WAS.
• The Author isn't here as a deux ex machina, but rather as another individual living in this world. Sure, she's part of Lute's friend group, but that's because she knows them the best as both the author of their world and as a person. She lives in the strange duality all authors know, of both being an omnipotent shaper of the world, an a relatively normal, non-omnipotent person going about their business at the same time.
• Technically, Malachite just kinda appeared in the world out of nowhere as much as she was born and raised in Topaz City. Again, weird author duality.
