"This Department, sorry Hod, is a bit of a laughing stock really. I'm your local weapon specialist and I am here in Training to do exactly that, but here I am having to propose programs for EGO management when it should have been part of the protocols from the start. We aren't training our Employees here, we're just making them into fodder for the Abnormalities."
― Marietta

Personality

Off the bat, one can tell Marietta is a tired woman. Despite the smile on her face, she's not the most welcoming and one would dare say that only Captains and high level Agents really have the capacity to approach her. While Marietta wishes she could find the time to talk and socialize more, she laments that it's always interrupted by her duties especially because in her words "the Training Department is in shambles." She is actually quite humorous and enjoys small talk and even interacting with others in the hallways. She's even the sort of person to just shrug off a low level breach and tell others to laugh that they're dealing with an easy Abnormality.

She can be a little closed off, and isn't entirely too welcoming of those who push to want to know her more deeply and personally when she isn't comfortable. Marietta is a woman of many boundaries and often puts hard stops whenever someone tries to get personal her. It doesn't stop her from being cordial, civil and friendly however; and she can even be flirtatious if she feels up to it. She keeps herself distanced from many out of self-preservation, and only find herself becoming more vulnerable and comfortable around those who have survived longer. To the Facility's captains, Marietta actually speaks in very playful and teasing tones, and is known to be much more comfortable and casual with them.

Marietta is a woman who is proud and passionate about her work; not because she thinks she is contributing for the betterment of others, but for the sole reason that what she does is useful. She likes seeing her work in action and knowing that people like it give her a bit of a bragging right to tell others she knows what she's doing and that she can get the job done. Marietta is also the kind of person who likes a challenge, and absolutely enjoys it when someone would dare her. It's not a show of superiority, it's really just a more genuine aspect of her surfacing to others. She is equally hardworking, but also a little too hardworking. Marietta often bits off more than she could chew simply because she knows she can handle a lot; but she doesn't understand her own limits until she's entirely burnt out.

Deep down, Marietta has her own laments that she's trying to keep up a face of being okay. She's tired of living the life she's lived and does genuinely want to rest and have a peaceful home to return to. Her background has made her bitter about her circumstances, and unable to assimilate into more peaceful environments. She knows herself enough that she will be looking for a fight, or seek out people who have use for her services. She tells herself that eventually, she will find that peaceful life when she's finally done with all the violence. She knows it's a lie, but the thought comforts her.

Story

History

Marietta Eliza Ryd was born to the owner of a weapons workshop in the Backstreets of District 12. The family was simply well off and scraped by every month, being able to keep up with expenses for both home and business. With an extremely saturated market for Fixers, it also became difficult for the family to be able to compete with an equally saturated market for workshops. Whilst always wanting to give out the best quality weapons, the family never had a large pool of returning customers.

Marietta was homeschooled for her whole life. Whilst her parents were fairly educated, they didn't have the money to send her to school. The young Marietta grew up at least literate, and with skills in arithmetic that was more fitting for business than not. Her parents moreoever wanted to make her focus harder on her craft as they needed one more set of hands to help continue the business and work to get by. From a young age, Marietta worked hard at home to hone her craft as her parents wanted. While she tried to have a normal life with hobbies and friends to see whenever she wanted, the Backstreets made it nigh impossible due to the dangers that lurked in every nook and cranny. Even at a young age, Marietta didn't have much to expect from life except to find a way to make her family's life more comfortable. While they were complacent with it, she was not. Though, it was expected from a young child in the Backstreets, and her parents only waited until she had become jaded and accepted the circumstances they were in.

In her teen years, Marietta was finally able to help run the workshop and started developing weapons of her own. She was known by her clients to make interesting, but imperfect weapons. They had high destructive power, but the threshold of how much power they could harness was still in an experimental phase for Marietta, who found a way to bring returning clients. Purposely create weapons with potential, but make sure that the clients would return a few times before completely fine tuning them and refining them. Eventually, knowing that it would bring a bad name to her family's workshop, she was given no choice but to create proper, refined weapons. Marietta decided what could be a fix for her family is to work on guns. However; workshops that made guns needed proper patents, and it was a trial for the Ryd family to get that sorted out as Marietta did not wait for the patent to start creating guns. She would tinker for days on end and trial them numerous times, almost getting into trouble. She studied guns and sold her most refined ones to clients willing to pay top money for them, even without a patent. Eventually, she started experimenting with bullets and would create custom guns that would bring in more high-class customers, to the point that Nest Fixers were interested in buying these more affordable guns as her workshop was but a Backstreets workshop. Marietta dutifully studied the weapons she made, and eventually became a bit of a curator herself in showing off what her family's workshop had to offer. All this, without a patent. Up until this time, Marietta somehow was never completely exposed to how cruel and ruthless violence around her, as she merely remained in her workshop tinkering away trying to chase a nigh impossible dream.

Marietta's expertise caught the interest of scouters for R Corporation, and finding out that this workshop was developing guns without a patent, offered to get an official patent in exchange for Marietta to be a full time weapons consultant. Aside the patent, the Ryd family was given a huge sum of money that would keep them beyond well fed and secured for months. Marietta took this as a chance to get her family to the Nest and live less hectic and less dangerous lives, so at 18, she took up the offer in R Corporation. She did initialyl start out as a consultant up until she started testing her own weapons and gradually took to training with the other employees of the area. Marietta was not jarred by the amount of work she had to put in. She was used to it, but socially, this was a whole new environment for her and Marietta worked hard for her superiors to get a good word in for her so she could earn more. When Marietta was 20, she realized that being a consultant just wasn't doing it for her. She sent much money back to her family, but she was not earning as much as a solider in the corporation. Even if she was not accustomed to it, Marietta was convinced that she could make it and it would help her and her family immensely.

The taste of violence was somehow new to Marietta. She had always made weapons that killed people, but witnessing death was something else entirely. It raised eyebrows especially since she was from the Backstreets, and how she could be so sheltered in such an environment was unheard of for the employees of R Corp. Because of the nature of R Corp, it did not take long at all before Marietta was used to the carnage. Marietta was not known for her skills as a combatant, but her specialty with weapons that made her squad so unique from the rest. Other teams would commission Marietta to create or enhance their weapons, and she earned handsomely for it. Her dreams of a peaceful life were put on hold, as now all she wanted was to survive. She still enhanced her own weapons, upgraded her gear, anything to ensure her own survival. This drive to survive earned her many promotions, up until she realized she was named Captain of the Rattlesnake Team, one of the more elite teams next to the Rabbits. Although Marietta was now a Captain, she could finally taste some privelege in her position. She indulged in many things she knew she couldn't indulge in during her earlier years, leading up to some wild years even though she was a Captain. Somehow, she managed to balance an enjoyable life with the carnage she brought upon with her own skills. What happened to Marietta after she became Captain, she never told anyone.

By the time Marietta reached 30, she was already hardened and tough as nails in dealing with her job. She reveled in the fight and created even more powerful weapons fit for a Wing. Violence was an everyday for her, and so was wild partying whenever she was free. She grew accustomed to her life, and she was not tired of it yet. She still earned to have her parents move into a Nest, but they insisted to stay in the Backstreets. This led to a spat between Marietta and her family, who were not ready to just uproot themselves and settle in a Nest. Instead, they moved to the border, where it was surely safer. Dejected by her hard work going to waste, Marietta cut contact with her family for a while. However; only a year later, the Smoke War broke out and threw the entire City into chaos. Being in R Corporation, Marietta was in the front lines as the Rattlesnake Team was hired by another Wing to defend them. The taste of outright war changed Marietta, and it changed her view on her work and what she'd been doing her whole life. it led to numerous reflections of her wanting a peaceful life, yet it is in bloodshed that she thrives and revels. In the chaos, she lost her family, and she lost everything she worked for. With everything crashing down on her, Marietta was ready to throw in the towel and retire after the war was over. She had saved enough, and she could find more work elsewhere outside the Wings. Deep down, Marietta was denying that she understood and knew the profitability of violence and war, and it was a life she had become so accustomed to that assimilating into a more peaceful life just would not work for her.

That did not mean that she did not try. Marietta tried leaving R Corporation and taking up less violent work. She wanted to return to becoming a weapons consultant, but found herself getting bored and no longer feeling the thrill of a fight. In the aftermath of the Smoke War, she met two of her superiors at the time, two older Fixers: Salvador and Oscar, who saw her potential during that time, and offered her work in their Fixer Offices respectively. Marietta wanted to deny them, but she knew herself enough that she would turn to what she was used to, and joined Salvador in Dawn Office for a short time. Marietta figured that being a Fixer was close to being her thing, but not quite. However; with no home to return to, she stayed with Salvador, and Oscar occasionally, and she did work on their weapons as well. Prior to Sigma Workshop, it was Marietta working on Salvador's weapons. However; it didn't take long until Marietta became tired of what she was doing. She was tired of the life she was living and just wanted peace of mind. She bade goodbye to Salvador and Oscar, not knowing what to do next. She just wanted to stop thinking about the death she deals and the chaos her creations propagated. When she was 32, Marietta found herself invited to Lobotomy Corporation, an eco-friendly energy company that was interested in her technological specializations. Working for another Wing was not what she wanted, but being financially down on her luck was what caused her to accept regardless.

Plot

Marietta told herself that she should have seen it coming. She knew that there was just going to be death, carnage and suffering, no matter what Wing it was. Immediately, Marietta skipped over the Training Programs as she was already used to combat, and the only training she needed to do was Abnormality Work. Her actual training was different because she was a consultant for weapons in R Corp, and was initally put into Extraction for her specialization. Yes, marietta thrived there becoming some sort of consultant on improving EGO and manufacturing more efficient EGO, but she found herself dissastisfied when she found that no matter how good the weapons she helps manufacture are, if the person wielding it has no idea waht they're doing, then it's all for naught. For all she knew, only she and senior Employees knew how to actually manage these weapons.

She found herself wanting to transfer to the Training Department, which was approved by the Manager and Hod, her new Sephirah when she transferred. Immediately, Marietta started pitching in ideas that could help newer Employees get accustomed to EGO and prevent any more untoward incidents in regards to the Equipment. Hod, pleased with this, highly encouraged Marietta to pursue this program. Her former experience as Rattlesnake Team Captain in R Corp siginificantly helped her cause, and her training programs actually helped more rapid promotion for Employees. Marietta, being so accustomed to combat, was not too shabby herself and proved herself to be frightening when dealing with Abnormalities. It was a no-brainer that Marietta would become a Captain. She was sent to Disciplinary one day, where she was to undergo Captain's Training under Ezra, the Captain of Disciplinary and the famed Colored Fixer, the Scarlet Phantom.

Hod would say Marietta shone as a Captain, and that she wanted to help as much as her new Captain was. She pitched Counselling Programs; but they became extremely detrimental in the long run as she was administering Enkephalin to her employees. Marietta wanted to have a word in with her Sephirah, already stressed over helping sober up addicts on top of her duties as Captain and focusing on her EGO Training programs and newly implemented Protocols. However; Hod would not take it, as she didn't want to feel useless and wanted to convince herself that she was a good person and that she cared. This caused numerous spats between the two, and eventually Marietta resigned from her position as Captain as it was too much for her. However; she kept to her Training Protocols if she wanted to actually see some change in the place, and this was just how she felt she could do it without going insane. Soon enough, Marietta also came to find out that Hod had been taking Enkephalin herself, and had many a trippy breakdown that only caused to be disappointed in her. She saw enough of this dependency in the War when she saw how others coped; but her resentment from hod prevented her from even properly addressing the issue and helping her. As for the now empty Captain position; Marietta entrusted it to a young and promising Agent who always had the best intentions for everyone. Imagine her shock and disappointment when said employee also had become addicted to Enkephalin. At age 40, Marietta was no longer the Captain of the Training Team, serving a solid six years in the Department.

Tired from everything, Marietta remained as a Head Researcher and earned herself a respectable name in Lobotomy Corporation. However; she can tell it was getting difficult for her to uphold what she tried to do for so many years only to see everything fall apart constantly. It would bring up old feelings, but Marietta was getting too old to think about such things and slowly but surely, she was becoming complacent in her place. There would be no peace for her; only carnage.

Trivia

  • Marietta is currently 42 years old and has been an Employee for 9 years. Her birthday is November 24.
  • She is considered by many Agents to be one of the most attractive women in the facility, and others find it an honor to even be spoken to. Marietta knows this, but she thinks it's a waste of time.
  • Marietta has an unorthodox way of managing her EGO, and it's shown that she somehow is able to still fully wield its full capacity.
  • Similarly to Ezra, Marietta is able to use any EGO Weapon to it's max capacity and even be able to unlock new aspects if she's lucky.
  • Sometimes, Marietta actually swings by Extraction to see how the work is going. Employees of Extraction actually want her around again because of her specialty. On occasion, Marietta does work in Extraction to refine more EGO.
  • Marietta doesn't have a home outside of Lobotomy Corporation, and availed of the dormitories in the facility. She can say she lives very comfortably in the place.
  • The Burrowing Heaven is not one of Marietta's main assignments, but she had to fill in for another Employee once. That single work alone earned her an EGO Gift, strangely enough.
