About

Mbali believes in second chances, and third chances-- and maybe even fourth if she's feeling spicy. In her eyes, the world is always changing and should always be open to change, and people are all deserving of the same respect deep down. All that you need is a little elbow grease and concentration, and you can better yourself and your world!

It annoys her when people call this outlook optimistic. In her eyes, she isn't being an optimist, she's showing kindness and expecting kindness in turn. In her opinion, that is the basic rules of how the world works, and if someone meets her kindness with hate, she will not hesitate to fight for herself or her friends. She's not pacifistic, she's not idealistic, and she's annoyed by doomers who call her naieve for saying the world can be kind.

She's had some rough experiences in the past, especially since she lost her mother to a possession, but she hasn't let it slow her down. With her father as a support structure, she feels she's capable of doing anything.

Trivia

Likes

Pottery Being able to shape the earth without much effort, making pottery is grounding and theraputic for Mbali. She's able to make a lot of things that she otherwise would not know how to make at her skill level because she just, as Pasha lovingly puts it, cheats.

Organizing It's a nice and relaxing way to spent the day, especially since she'll be able to find everything later as well. She thinks it is all benefits and she would love to be paid for it if possible. If not possible, she'd do it anyways, but her boss doesn't need to know that.

Gossip When your favorite hobbies include making things with your hands and making things with your hands, it's nice to have someone to talk to. It's also nice to know what's going on with other people in the area so she knows who to help... and who to avoid.

Sunflowers Her favorite flowers, she likes to snack on the seeds when doing work that doesn't stain her hands. She likes to watch them grow and takes great pride when they get over her head. When she's able to convince her dad to let her grow sunflowers, she always presses the biggest one and keeps it.

Dislikes

Watercolor There isn't anything wrong with how they look per se, but she hates having to paint. It's the exact opposite of pottery and she feels like she has no control over how everything turns out, which stresses her out. When she paints, she just likes to paint colors... but they mix in ways she never intended and it exhausts her.

Night Shift Night Shift: the time when it's cold, damp, and dark, and because of where they live she can't even use more than a candle, which if she drops she'll have to stomp on her own plants. Or even when she's not working; traversing the base at night feels more intimidating than being outside of the wall.

Isolation Mbali is a social butterfly to end all social butterflies. She loves to talk to people and have the company, and having to work and do things alone makes her not only feel alone, but somewhat depressed as well. She can't focus or get as much done without having other people around.

Sunscreen She understands why it is important, she understands why she needs to wear it, but she's always hated how it feels on her skin. She feels lucky that her skin tone makes it so she won't burn as easy so she just... doesn't wear it when she can despite knowing it could cause other problems. She regrets nothing.

Strengths

Earth Manipulation Unlike most Partam powers, Mbali cannot summon her magic of choice from herself, instead solely drawing it from the world under her feet through willpower alone. Her power's strength are dependent on her physical strength and mental aquity, both of which she is well trained.

Blessing of Space Getting blessed by a celestial entails having a piece of their power inserted into yourself. Already capable of shaping the earth, Mbali was gifted the power to travel between spaces instantly. She can open portals that she and anyone else can use.

History

Peace in Ignorance

When telling the story of holding her daughter for the first time, Mbali's mother lovingly described it as being like spring had come early-- the joy had led the pyro parta to melt the snow outside her room in the dead of winter. The only damper to the story being that the reaction was likely to the pain of contractions she was experiencing not 10 minutes prior. That was just how Sibongile Tshabalala chose to operate, highlighting positives to ignore a negative. As a toddler, Mbali saw her as the sun; warm, welcoming and safe. Though she was calm around her dad, Vusumuzi, it was obvious she loved her mother best. Only Sibongile could make her daughter squeal with joy by smiling. As soon as she was able to walk, she toddled after her around the house. When her mother would use her fire, Mbali would watch it with wondering eyes. Close friends of her parents were convinced they were watching the incubation of a pyro, following in her mother's footsteps.

Maybe they were right, but the direction of Mbali's life and magical development changed very suddenly when she was almost five. A couple years before Mbali was born, a portal to Sanapeccum had been opened in a major city on the other side of the country. Through a combination of censorship, slow travelling, and the insanity of that claim to begin with, the idea of demons roaming around was seen as spiritual hoo-hah by a lot of Mbali's close family. That, and Sibongile's optimistic outlook on the world kept her family from taking the warnings of passing travellers too seriously. She practically rejected the notion as being possible any time it was brought up, more for her own sanity than careful thought. This would prove to be unwise.

Though her father assumes she was too young to remember the incident, it was more like she was too young to realize the danger at the time. Mbali was with her mother when she was possessed by a passing demon, but had no way to understand what had happened. All she knew was that something entered her mother, and now she was sick or forgetful or something. The imposter lived inside her mom and within her family for almost a week and a half before the oddities were too much and Vusumuzi took action. It wasn't just her, too, multiple people in town had been showing signs of change since the month began. Not knowing who to trust after getting confirmation that his wife was no longer herself, he took Mbali and fled town that night, not giving them the chance to stop him.

Later, Mbali would ask what pushed her father to check her mother for possession, seeing as her parents used to be so adament that it wasn't possible. With a sigh, Vusumuzi explained Mbali stopped smiling when her mother looked at her. As if she were a stranger. Though he didn't understand what he was noticing, it was the first alarm bell to go off in his head. He got in communication with a nearby resistence group (one that the townspeople formerly saw as either eccentric or insane) and they helped him escape the area, promising they would return to save Sibongile when they got the materials to fight back against the invading force. That promise remaiend unfufilled for over ten years. Mbali grew up without a mother.

Sadly, at the time especially, Mbali's story was increasingly common.

Vusumuzi Tshabalala

father

Mbali is incredibly close with her father, and he put a lot of effort into making sure she still had a good childhood in spite of the circumstances. They have a code in case they feel the area is growing hostile, they have reserve food ready in case they need to travel, and her dad volunteers for undesirable jobs to ensure he stays in the loop. She knows he does this work for her, and she wants to one day repay him for everything he did while raising her.

Ferity

boyfriend

A young couple, Ferity and Mbali want the best for each other. They want to be as good as possible to each other. Mbali loves Ferity for his knowledge and how he likes to use it, overthinking things as efficiently as possible. The pair trade notes written in shorthand that look like nothing but gibberish to other people, and hang out every moment they get the chance.

Pasha Eld

childhood friend

Pasha and Mbali are good friends through childhood and not much else. In fact, they mostly just know each other because their families were in similar social classes. The two like poking fun at each other, and as they're both extroverted and good-humored, tend to have unifying conversations with each other over what would feel like genuinely nothing for others.

Hemlock Eira

ex-boyfriend

Mbali's somewhat very bitter ex-- he's not dangerous, and the two are still friends, but Hemlock has had things he's needed to work through-- especially emotionally-- since the two first started dating. Mbali is aware that Hemlock still harbors some feelings for her, and she does her best to let him know they're over, but it takes him some time, and his own personal journey, to really process it.

Sibongile Tshabalala

mother

Under the impression that her mother is dead and has been for years, Mbali has grieved and moved on. She still celebrates her mother's memory at every holiday that allows it, but she's mostly just distantly sad about not being able to know her better. Also, how much losing Sibongile hurt her father. Some members of the resistance are somewhat rude about her memory, seeing as her choices could have got her daughter possessed too, but Mbali is the first to argue in her favor every time.
