Mackenzie lived an almost picturesque American suburban life. Boring in comparison to even the sitcoms she saw on TV and definitely compared to the rumors she'd over hear about her extended family. However eventually some of those rumors turned out to be true as Mac found out when her cousin Asami had run away from home. While no one confirmed the reason exactly from the speculation she overheard from her parents she had apparently had a fight with her parents over having a girlfriend. Something that was confirmed by Shizuki, Mackenzie's other cousin, a girl who, after losing probably the most important figure in her life, Mac quickly did her best to try and step in and become something of an older sister figure for. Even if that was hard going thanks to Shizuki's constant moving to and fro between her home in the US and living with thier grandparents back in Japan. It wasn't a perfect life anymore, knowing what she knew about her family, but to Mackenzie herself it was still alright. She had nothing to complain about and nothing bad happening to her. At least that was the case until after Mackenzie's sixteenth birthday and after she got a present from her parents; a brand new car.
The exact details of the crash aren't that clear to Mackenzie. Full of spots where she seemed to black out only to come to somewhere else. At first in her driver's seat, then the back of an ambulance, and later the hallways of a hospital being rushed somewhere and then nothing until she woke up in a hospital room. Unable to speak and, as she soon found out, her face permanently scarred by the crash that had sent her there. In the time after that crash Mackenzie's normal life was over as she pulled out from her high-school to instead be home-schooled, cut off contact with her friends to be almost alone, and wished for the days when things were normal. Her rehab process was a long and arduous one but there was one person who proved to be Mackenzie's saving grace, Shizuki. Who was the first person to learn ASL, learning it alongside Mac, so the two of them could continue to communicate. It was a hard climb but eventually she managed to make it back from that dark place she found herself in and soon enough she was on her way to college.
While some of the scars faded over time the worst of the worst weren't going to be going anywhere but Mac didn't care. In the span of six months after finally being cleared from her rehab she had not only managed to get herself a job but had also enrolled herself in school once again this time as a college student. Sure while she isn't happy of the stares she gets sometimes she does he best to ignore them and power through. A message so strong that, with an appeal to the campus for some funding, she was able to set up a support group. A local thing to help people deal with their trauma regardless of where it came from. Of which one of the members would eventually include Shizuki's girlfriend. A desire to help since she knows just how hard it can be to have someone in your corner.
