Varic (history)

Profile

• He sets out to travel, and for several years that’s all he does. He meets many people, one encounter with an old warlock sticking with him the most. Intrigued, he searches for information about warlocks, but has little success finding anything substantial due to traveling so remotely.

• Eventually stumbles across a recruitment band for a knightly order. ‘The Knights of the Unicorn,’ they call themselves. After hearing about their philosophies, he joins on the spot. He soon meets with an assigned team, and is on his first quest.

• One of the team-members, Barlynn, a dwarven paladin woman, christens him with a nickname.

“You look like a Varic, to me. I’m gonna call you that, if you don’t mind.”

• Varic doesn't mind at all.

• Varic soon discovers that he suddenly has a wealth of knowledge at his fingertips. He just has to show librarians his new signet ring, and they grant him access to any book he wants. Recalling his curiosity about warlocks, Varic discreetly gets to work on researching pacts and patrons. He studies in between quests, becoming a close friend of Barlynn’s. The paladin teaches him dwarvish, slowly but surely.

• After months upon months of research, Varic uncovers an unusual text that describes how to find and form a pact with something referred to as being "Blade-Bound.” One must perform a specific ritual in order to find an enchanted weapon strong enough to bond with...

• [ Insert Varic using his downtime to do just that. He eventually manages to scry the location of one, though his scrying doesn't go unnoticed; his divination is intercepted by something that claims it's the "first cursed-enchanted blade," and that it has a task for him if he wishes to become a warlock. It tells him the weapon he's scryed is in the hands of a rouge warlock who's somehow managing to abuse an unpredicted loophole in their contract. If he kills this warlock, he'll be granted a pact of his own. Varic hesitantly accepts.  ]

• Varic knows he’ll need assistance in finding this warlock, but isn’t sure his comrades would be too pleased about this task coming directly from a deity of cursed weaponry. So, he returns to his knightly team with a claim about a quest from some “noble.” They are to hunt down a warlock who has been causing trouble in this “noble’s” kingdom. His team rallies behind him, eager to be on another adventure.

• Things do not go well at all. They do manage to hunt down the wayward warlock, but he proves to be extremely powerful. By the time he’s been considerably weakened, Barlynn and Varic are the only ones left standing. Varic takes his chance and strikes.

• The (former) warlock’s weapon — a chain-whip with a gleaming purple blade at the end — clatters to the ground, now lying at Varic’s feet.

And it calls to him.

• Varic doesn't remember picking up the chain-whip as he turns to Barlynn.

She looks torn between rage and sorrow as she stares at the weapon. She spits at him. Leave.”

Varic flinches. “What? Barlynn, I—”

“If I ever see your face in this province again, I will smite you and that thing you've pacted with. Leave now, and I will not tell the order of your… choices.”

• So Varic and his new weapon leaves. Fearing Barlynn will change her mind about letting him live, he travels as far away as he can possibly go.
