As fossil fuel stores begin to run out, and with no readily usable alternatives, the world falls into a modern "dark age" marked by unprecedented levels of climate change and pollution. In the face of energy shortages, one audacious grifter, the son of a bitumen sands oil magnate, pursues a fringe research experiment: to use human minds, augmented by neurally-linked supercomputers, to generate energy via the psychic manipulation of electromagnetic fields. Obviously, things go really well.
