a quiet, quiet month, not much art this month

OC Updates

...There are none this month. I fell off midway through the month and never recovered. I have a bunch of characters that I love and adore, and a lot
of stories I wish to tell, but my drive for actually sharing them divebombed... I hope to 'right' this in March and come back twice as strong but until then...

I've found it really hard to balance client work along with my personal life and personal projects, and along the way I forgot what I was really doing art for.
I want to get back to the projects though. Sadly, to past me, there is no way of meeting the deadlines I once wanted...

Life Updates

Though January began strong, Feburary got quite a bit shaky. Once again I started to take on too much at once and ended up paying for it, physically again.
One day I'll learn...

I've been working a lot on and off and I find it really hard to focus on one thing lately, but I'll do my best to be better for next month.

 Commission/Shop Updates! 

Themed badges are on the way!

One side project I've been working on is a fruit-themed sets of badges for use on Twitch and Youtube, I'm uncertain how much they'll be priced at; probably not much more than a few dollars each.
I'm having quite a lot of fun working with the limitations and they're forcing me to think and learn as I do them... Once I have them done, they'll be up on my ko-fi for sure, maybe an etsy too!

I am also considering seeing if I can make them into actual things; like sticker sheets! But I don't know yet, I have to do more research.

New year, Old Habits...

OC Updates

As one of my goals this year has been to share more literature, I'm happy to say that I've picked up the pace somewhat in uploading characters!

Introducing a mix of new and old faces! Family and friends alike.
 The characters I've been uploading this month are mostly 'NPC' ones, those who don't affect stories to much but have their roles
to make the world feel 'lived in'! I'd love to continue to expand my world bit by bit by uploading them, and I have a *lot* more characters I have never posted here before!

I've somewhat kept up with my goal of submitting one-shots as well! Most of these were written from 2022-2023 and have been edited for posting~

Life Updates
January was a relatively calm month, especially leading off of last year. Not much has happened in my personal life as of note to speak about... I'm just
a bit sad I didn't do as much art this month as last month... I've been feeling a bit down lately.

 Commission Updates! 

Slot Adjustment + Price Increases:

Going forward, I am going to start trying to limit the amount of complex commissions I take on at a given time. These include; Scenes, Alerts, Talksprites.
Each opening will have a set amount of complex slots (2-3) and people who are too late for them will be put on a waitlist for them. I hope you can understand
but doing 4+ scenes at once is overly stressful and unsustainable.

All types of Idles, Stream Assets and Scenes have had price increases. Upon looking back at my work from the past six months, and comparing it to what I did
a year or two ago, the prices did not line up with the amount of time I spend on things. In 2023 I told myself I wanted to put more time and pride into my pixels
and find myself putting at least an extra hour's worth of effort into each commission to add more lighting and shading to the sprites. This will hopefully help with the
overworking issue I've been facing as well.

Exploring more avenues.

That said, I took the bullet and did some calculations this month. Even with price increases I am unable to make anywhere near living wage. Last year I completed 180~
commissions (one every two days!) which totaled barely over half of minimum wage. I am very fortunate to have the client base and followers I do and I appreciate each and every
one of you, but in the end everything is just running me into the ground.

Going forward, I will be taking more time away from commissions to work on either upping my skill level; in hopes of getting hired at a studio- or making premade assets
for use for streamers (Starting/BRB/Ending screens, badges, etc) and games (tilesets, etc). I have already uploaded some old assets to my ko-fi as a test, but this year I really
need to focus on other streams of income as commissions alone is not sustainable. I hope you can understand.

If you have any idea for premade assets, either types (ie sub badges, stream avatars, etc) or themes (ice cream, animals, etc) please let me know below!

Goodbye Rabbit... 

2023, the Year of the Rabbit has come and gone. Before I talk about how much of a rollercoaster it is I wish to talk about OCs... specifically Rei!
As silly as it may seem,  I owe a lot to Rei this year, and without the whole 'Year of the Rabbit', I don't think I would have drawn them that often.

Rei was created as a one-off character I got motivation to make one day, but they've turned out to be way more than that. From helping me discover my pixel illustration style, to being the first
animated post I posted on Twitter that really blew up, Rei really carried me this year.

I had planned on making a tribute to Rei by the end of the year, but I caught covid and those plans went out the window. Maybe early 2024?

Rabbits aside, 2023 was a rollercoaster for my personal life. It started out somewhat normal, then March came with both electrical and plumbing issues happening all at the same time
(my house could have set on fire, wish I was joking), May I had a bunch of appointments I was waiting on for a year which ultimately went no where... I started therapy in July, went to a
convention in September and caught COVID in December.

Wow, that was a lot.

Art Achievements + Updates

I didn't quite break last year's  achievement of completing 200+ commissions this year, however the count was around 180! 
That's one completed commission for every 2 days! No wonder why I felt so burnt out x.x

In 2023 I also received another Daily Deviation on deviantART, for Moving day! which was a pleasant surprise!

My Twitter went from 500 followers to almost 4k, which was surprising!

Another Numbers stat, is that I completed my biggest group commission this year.
A scene that had a whopping EIGHT fully animated characters featured in it, with another four cameo characters,
and took from September to December to finish fully, working on it a bit almost every day...

Though it is quite shaky, I feel like this is the year that I have truly found my style. It feels good.

Looking into 2024, one of my goals is going to be to try to prevent burnout. To do this I plan on bringing back posting client work to my socials
in between original posts. I have created new templates for this, that can and will include watermarks.

Aside from this, I have refocused my VGEN commissions to mainly feature Stream-Centered content, as well as updated all of their thumbnails.
I wish to add a few more things there, namely my Error Alerts, however I am limited to how many different types of commissions I can post there, as I am not verified yet-
I may remove the Tiny Surprise me Commission to make way for this, which is something I considered doing anyways due to my lack of confidence doing them.

I am sorry for all the back and forth with commission types and such, marketing and business is hard, especially to get right the first time when you don't know what you're doing x.x

In 2024, I also really wish to experiment with more income-streams for my art. This will include pre-made assets such as Badge Packs or premade Stream Avatars critters. Ideally I'd like to
make a set every quarter (4 months) but I am unsure if I can live up to that. If you have any suggestions or things you would be interested in,  in the realm of pre-made purchasable content, I'd love to hear them!

Another thing I wish to explore is alternative methods of payment. Currently I take Paypal and Ko-Fi but I've heard of another that might be a good option to open as well.

And on the topic- thanks to a good friend <3- one of my goals this year will be to be more strict on keeping track of payment. I've been pretty lax with letting people get away
without paying for commissions, and am going to take measures against it in 2024; Sending payment reminders after a set time, having and maintaining a public Blacklist, etc.

Now commissions aside let's talk about my Personal Projects of 2023....

 Hah, got you there. I barely did any this year with my main focus being on work and the craziness of the year x.x
In May I got swept up in a group collab that went south very quickly and I lost motivation to work on anything but Commissions for a while...

Moving on to 2024 then!

The Year of the Dragon- 2024

One of the streamers I frequently watch keeps using the term "Slaying Dragons" in reference to reaching hard-to-complete goals, and with that said I have a feeling that 2024 will be all about that for me. 

Looking into early 2024, I fear that I will have to have major dental work done, and with both Generalized Anxiety Disorder, a phobia of the dentists (and a phobia of being put under which will definitely have to happen)

 That said, I am uncertain about early 2024. I do not wish to make any promises I cannot keep. For now I do not have any set times for an appointment, but leading up to the appointment and the
recovery period after, I will probably be slow at doing commissions or stop doing commissions altogether. I hope you can understand.

Dentist aside, I have other life-things, responsibilities and the like that will pop up through 2024 and further take my attention away from running my socials here and there, apologies in advance.
And on that note, one of my goals in 2024 is to break further away from my Socialized and Generalized anxiety disorders; to go out into the world, interact with others and maybe even
make more friends.

Art-Wise, I want 2024 to be the year of not just taking the step forward, but running towards my goals. I have spent so much time this year uploading characters here on Toyhou.se and I love them all, however
their stories are all stuck in my head and no one will know of them unless I find a way of telling them. To this note I wish to explore a few different mediums; animation, walking simulators, and written content
to bring my characters to life and get them out there.

The holidays are just around the corner, especially with how late I am at getting this update up. Sadly, I'm not really feeling them this year...

OC Updates

This past month we haven't had many OC updates... The main one being the introduction of Kon!

Kon is a character who's existence was inspired by a fox plushie I got at a convention this year, however his design is more based on one of my old fursonas from
my furry days. I'm glad I can bring back an old cherished character, even if it's completely overhauling him.

I have made a few more characters in November but did not have the time to get around to making them toyhou.se pages. To be completely honest I've been
having a bit of an identity crisis lately when it comes to my characters, stories, etc...

Life Updates

November was rough, and set up for an even rougher December. I had my birthday last month which I won't talk about much but it... didn't go too well, and when
things were finally starting to look up, I caught a decently bad round of COVID that knocked me out at the end of the month. Fever and all that jazz. I'm still dealing
with a lack of taste and smell which has made me less than enthused, as cooking was one of my stress relievers....

But hey, I did say last month that I was overworking and needed a break... I just didn't want a forced break like this...

I was actually working on a small project that I wanted to have finished by this month in November... now it's on hiatus, and maybe even scrapped.

 Commission Updates!

Due to the aforementioned covid stuff, I'm behind in commissions. I do not feel good about opening commissions until a few of them that I have been
slightly delaying are completed.

As such, the next commission opening probably will be around the week of December 18th, unless things progress faster. If you wish to have a held

Snow starts to dust my sleepy little city as I am writing this, we have officially crossed the line from Spooky Season into... oh no...
October was very much of a rollercoaster for me, it was a whirlwind of stressful events, and I'd be lying if I said I'm not glad it's over.

For October, I feel like my favorite piece would be this one, not sure why...

OC Updates

Let's say hello to some of my newcomers.
In October I uploaded the Unicorn General, L'ejade and the sneaky god Nyx to my TH!

Both of them are from a secondary universe I have owned and been working on (very rarely) on and off since 2017. 
In contrast to my main world 'Kado Tales' this world is a parody of isekai stories, which I originally came up with to poke fun at how bad the genre is.
The initial draft of it got quite grimdark at times, and I'm not sure if I'll ever publish it in one form or another, but I really love the designs from it so...

Aside from them, I finally got around to uploading more Kado Tales characters, these characters are somewhat like NPCs!

From the music producer, Fumika to the Plant Store Attendant Jin and the friendly Grandma Keiko. Oh and we can't forget Vulcan who is a bit of a wildcard

I'm glad to have these guys finally on my TH! Especially Jin and Keiko who are somwhat important to both Keshiki Village and my secondary sona Habu!

Life Updates

As previously mentioned, October was a bit of a rough month... I had some adult things to contend with that stressed me out, and (to my fault) I took on too many commissions which
seemingly triggered some physical health problem (which- hopefully seems to have faded for now). It was scary and made a feedback loop of worrying about my health which made the
problem worse...

With that said, I'll probably have to lay off the whole, 'daily post' thing I've been trying to do this year; it's just not worth my physical health. I will also have to better monitor how many
commissions I take on at the same time...

So for now I'm cutting back on the 'pressure to post daily' and, in order to give myself purpose still, am focusing a bit of my time on a project that I intend to try to finish by January. It feels
good to be working on a personal project like this again, and I'm learning that not every post needs to be animated to be good as well..

 YCHs?

Because of the aforementioned stress/health issue, I'm not working as hard as last month to get YCH's up and running- I almost thought of doing it for this
post but honestly I don't want to put myself under that much pressure. That said, I hope to have *some* YCH's up on my VGen sometime next week. Here are two rough preview examples from that set;

September went by sooo fast... We're almost into snowy territory.
It's really hard to pick a favorite this month. There are so many both strong and weak pieces, a quality rollercoaster.
If I had to choose though, Record Shop is probably one of my favorites, Love the color palette I found for it.

Life Updates

September was a somewhat calm month for me, other than a dying fire alarm giving me a scare in the past week. (Don't worry it's been given new batteries and it's happy now).
I didn't do too many exciting things to note. Though I did have a dentist appointment in which I found out that... fixing things is going to cost a lot. I have some time before that though, so
I'll try hard to be able to afford it when the time comes...

I've been trying to get into reading here and there in replacement of some time mindlessly browsing social media. So far it's mostly non-fiction books, hopefully some of which will help me.

Commission Updates + Future YCHs?

Dou ever do something and then regret it immediately after? That's about how I feel about my commission refiguring right now.
I apologize to any clients at how confusing I've made commissions in the past month, splitting up Icons and such into their own documents.

Right now, after reading through a few things, I am testing the waters with VGen , and if things go well I will be moving some of my commissions there to better organize things.
The main thing affected will be icons, 'Stream Avatars', and RPG Sprites; all things that are similar to YCH's. If you are a past client who is still interested in such types but do
not wish to go through VGen, I am okay with doing them off-site as well, they just won't be listed directly on my main Commission Sheet + Form.

I will also be trying a few different 'Your Character Here', themed Commissions over on VGen which I am trying to get ready for next opening.
To start with, there are two sets; 'Tea Party' and 'Windows Error'. Both are designed in mind to act as alerts for streamers, but could just be fun animations regardless.

Here's a rough idea of what the finished art for one of them might look like.

The base and such is still a work in progress.

I've struggled for the longest times with 'YCH' styled commissions. I've ordered them from a few people before no problem, but struggle mentally with doing them myself. I don't want to charge too much
 for something that is essentially done on a template, so I've been trying to brainstorm how to make these little guys be template-based, yet have enough personality for every character. An example of
what I've come up with for the Tea Series is; three different default 'tea colors' to choose from, along with a few different flowers and teabags, so there will be a good amount of (free)
customization and mix and match.

Each Themed Series of YCHs will come with 4-6 unique animations; as they are meant to be cheaper alternative to my Stream Alerts. Pricing will probably be between my RPG Stream Alerts and my
usual Stream Alerts to be a happy medium. So I'm guessing around $35~ each, but may depend on complexity of animation and special effects. (They seem to range from 6 frames to 20+ currently).

I hope to get them up and running on VGen by next week, but that might not happen as fast as I expect.
If they are somewhat successful I intend on carrying it on with a few more themed sets (Winter? Galaxies? Aquatic!)

In the end the addition of YCH offerings is to be able to offer a tier of commissions that isn't quite high as my fully custom commissions, as I feel bad how expensive some of my commissions are
as well as streamline my commission process to hopefully have more personal time to work on projects...

Oh and also commissions are currently closed, but will be reopening Early-Mid Next Week if all goes well.

First of all, with the state of social media as it is, I've decided to slowly open my discord server;

My discord server is mainly a place for me to share art, commission status updates, and stream my progress in.

I'm a bit hesitant to use it as it is not how I usually run my commissions but I'm willing to try it anyways. If you have an account there, even just following me would help a lot! No worries/no pressure if you

The Summer is almost over but this heat is back with a vengeance
As usual my favorite pieces of the month before are showcased above. My favorite probably is 'Moss Packaging' , though it's really hard to decide between them...

Character Updates

Over the duration of August I worked on and off on worldbuilding, culminating in my toyhouse group Kado Tails. I have put a lot into it though this month I was mostly focused on getting info on Key Locations up.

Kado Tails is a universe I have been developing since 2019, centered around supernatural Yokai and how they interact with the world around them. Originally intended as a game project with Tsuru and Mamoru being the two lead playable characters, it grew into something much bigger. I've wrote a lot of small short stories I haven't uploaded anywhere else, and I wish to get back to attempting to make games at some point but I realized that I don't want to jump in head-first again without knowing my world well.

That said, Kado Tails is my personal world and is not, nor will ever be considered as an setting for any kind of official roleplays or interactive ARPG as I've had incidents in the past with such situations. Please respect this decision ^^''

You may click through the pages on the sidebar to get a better idea of the world my characters live in though! For starters my 'Sona, Toku currently resides in Hinode City!
Not all sub-locations have fully written pages yet. That will be a job for next month, along with the yokai encyclopedia... I've got a lot to do.

World aside, I managed to get a few more character reworks and designs done last month. From the great white tiger Kami Byakko , to the mysterious Kusano, and the almost scary Eiko I've managed to upload quite a few both new and old faces. (Eiko I've had planned since 2019!) There's still quite a few more to go as I continue to flesh out locations.

Life Updates

When life gives you lemons... Make a portal quote, or something. I don't know. That said life has been giving me a lot of lemons lately. I was going to write this up yesterday but I was too
tired from walking around a con for three hours straight... I did meet another cool pixel artist and got quite a few cool pieces of art there though so I guess it was worth it.

Con aside, I've had run-ins with the dentist again, some of which are telling of events I am not looking forward to, and might need to take an extended leave in the future to deal with. Fun fun x.x

Aside from that I got a feature on deviantART three days into August, for 'moving day' my inner child would be ecstatic at the fact, as all I ever wanted growing up was to be featured on that site.

Commission Updates

Oh boy, this one will be a BIG one... I have been putting it off for a month but I have finally sat down and revised some things regarding my commissions.

Non-price related, I've added a few questions to my form, including if you'd like me to upload finished commissions to my socials. This is a totally optional request and I won't mind if people answer 'no'. I was speaking to my therapist the other day about how I feel like I need to draw a piece of original art every day just to have something to post because I no longer post finished commissions without being explicitly told to after N*F*T/AI stuff took over and she suggested something along those lines so we'll see if it works.

Another non-price related thing- I've moved most of my icon commissions off the main sheet and onto the 'retired sheet'.  I felt like the main sheet was getting too cluttered with them, and since I don't do them as often as everything else anymore I felt it would be best to focus on the more 'impressive' things- to hopefully be more attractive to indie devs who stumble across my profile- I'd love to actually work in the games industry.

That said anything on the 'Retired Sheet' is not going away for good. I've sent an application in for VGen and hope to try out that platform (or ko-fi if I don't make it into VGen) for YCH-styled commissions (eg small sprites, icons, etc). I wouldn't mind doing them as one-offs off of said site as well, but I won't be advertising them front and center as I used to.

Now for the hard to swallow pill; pricing.

I've been afraid to touch my prices for quite some time, but I've been sitting down and analyzing stuff. I realized I don't make minimum wage, yet I work basically 8-4 on a daily basis, working on comms, sending messages back and forth, running social medias. I worked my hardest the past few weeks to try to get there and I still fell short of my local minimum wage...

And it's not just the 'minimum wage' part too. I realize with some commission types that I underprice myself on, I find myself losing interest and drive midway through, my quality dropping as well. It's not something I *want* to happen, but it *does* happen, mostly when dealing with Scenes and Alerts. I get in the toxic idea that to make up for it I just take more commissions and then I find myself working on ten things at once without a break. It isn't healthy.

So to hopefully curb this I did some research, looked at how long it took me to actually do scenes, found other artists with comparable skill sets and tried to adjust my prices accordingly. Detailed Scenes by far had the biggest jump, but the $72 USD for non-chibi scenes was always a placeholder until I got comfortable enough with working with other people's characters in them... And honestly, compared to some of the artists I looked at the increase is still underpricing given the amount of time and energy I put into not only making and animating the scenes but the back-and-forth I have with each client.

I hope that you can understand what I'm saying and continue to support me, through commissions or just by simply following and continuing to like my art!

I wish to get things under control so I won't overload myself with back to back commissions and maybe be able to focus on my own projects again.
