sprite's Bulletins

to-do list

Posted 1 year, 6 months ago by sprite

Here's a list of all the things I've got to get around to, so you know what isn't finished and I don't go insane trying to remember it all.

  • Overhaul NPC page
    • Section off into primary, secondary, and the staff and students of Marlo's school
    • Clean and update descriptions
    • Write up and implement staff and students
  • Sort of folder descriptions (either update or remove)
  • Avatars for Ellis, Jessamine, and Hickory
  • Update CSS for:
    • Literally everyone except Rome and Ellis (Adonis' should get minor tweaks)
  • Rewrite or just... write, for that matter, profiles for:
    • Literally everyone. Current priority: Marlo and Ness
  • Almost everyone should get new, standardized avatars as well, but I don't know if that'll ever happen.

OC Questionnaire Meme?

Posted 1 year, 11 months ago by sprite

I'm not much of one to use th as anything but a character repository, but this popped up in my notifs courtesy of melon_official (and his bulletin!) and I thought it'd be a fun reason to procrastinate!! I don't get to talk about my ocs much on here outside of their profiles so I will take what I get [grabs you]

  • 1. Which of your characters represent you the most?

Given Sprite is my sona, that's kind of his whole purpose, but I also wanna say Ness because his personality and character themes are basically ripped wholesale from myself. Po is a Minesona but otherwise woefully underdeveloped. Marlo gets an honorable mention because they began as a sona—for like a week before I'd even began to plan out their story as Agent 3—and I think it's impossible to get so invested in a character and it not reflect something about you...

Sprite is a very self-indulgent representation of myself, and doesn't have much of a story in-universe, just to prevent them from spiraling out into their own thing. They're just kind of there to spectate and elastic by nature—a Mimic Octoling—so I can reinvent them whenever I feel like I've grown out of their current incarnation! I think it's also worth mentioning that Crush embodies a frankly unfair number of my anxieties and, more importantly, the absolute worst way to cope with them.

  • 2. Which of your characters represent you the least?

Everyone else, really. I have literally nothing in common with Phee, or Perdita, or Adonis, or Tokyo, or — if they were created for narrative purpose, it's safe to assume they were never meant to have anything to do with me.

  • 3. What is your favorite design you made?

Depends on when you ask me! I give a lot of different answers for this one. Andy's clicked really fast and her tentacles are really fun to draw; so are Ness', though his bioluminescence patterns aren't my idea but rather based off a friend's OC. Folks also seem to like Sprite's a lot and I must concur; the two-toned pompadour was a stroke of genius, if I do say so myself.

  • 4. What is your favorite design you own?

See above! I don't own any that I didn't make. I can't count the number of times I've run across an adopt I've wanted but I can never convince myself it's worth the price... I mostly keep an eye out in case I can use those designs for existing characters I haven't drawn yet. (Incidentally, if y'all ever open adopts...)

  • 5. What is your biggest yet-to-obtain dreamy?

Honestly, the idea of dreamies weirds me out... Like Melon said, OCs aren't trading cards as much as story components; the idea of treating designs as nothing but designs doesn't click for me. I like my OCs' appearances to reflect specific symbolism or story details, and working backwards from an existing one can be counterintuitive. It doesn't help that like. A huge swath of designs on Toyhouse aren't in my wheelhouse to begin with. Woops.

  • 6. What is your most prized achieved dreamie?

See the above two questions!

  • 7. What is your oldest character?

Gonna answer for a few definitions: Marlo is the oldest by upload date, technically uploaded before I even had an account thanks to a friend hosting him for me. In terms of actual creation date, I made Asher in... 2014? She was my first-ever OC and suffered hard for it, but I like to think I've finally sorted her out (once I... you know... get around to drawing and developing her again.) In terms of their in-universe age, that goes to Newt, a sand-dollar and curator of Shellendorf Institute: he's pushing a century. (Or maybe Po—she doesn't remember how long she's been around, but she definitely isn't mortal.)

  • 8. What is your newest character?

I think that's Harmon! She won't get developed until Splatoon 3 drops and I can get my hands on the singleplayer campaign, but I have an outline until then.

  • 9. Favorite feral character you own?

I don't own one!

  • 10. Favorite human(oid) character you own?

Listen. I never give the same answer to this question, but let's be real, I sold my heart and soul to Marlo a long time ago.

  • 11. Favorite anthro character you own?

Again, don't own one! Apart from... Inklings are basically anthro squids, but.

  • 12. First original species character you obtained?

Again... I do not have one!

  • 14. What character do you plan to shower with love next?

I didn't draw Ness in anything but ensemble shots for the entirety of 2021, so if all goes to plan, I will spend the month of June drawing nothing but Ness. No Pride. Only Ness. Apart from that, everyone's on the chopping block for Artfight; I also really want to get around to finalizing Asher's revamp, but that depends on if and when I beat P:LA so it might be awhile.

  • 15. What character holds the most $$$ value?

Marlo, easy. Even if a price wasn't put on all the art I've made—which would put you in the thousands, honestly—they've still acquired the most commissioned and gifted art over the years, especially when taking into account all the old art from before their design was standardized.

  • 16. What character has the most art?

Again, Marlo has (at the time of writing) 152 images uploaded on Toyhouse and hundreds more in scribbles and sketchbooks and long-stained dry-erase boards. No one even comes close. After her is Ness, with—drumroll please—wait for it—...38.

  • 17. What character has the most favorites?

Marlo has ten! And one of those is me. None of my characters really attract favorites, which is fine. [said through tears] It's fine.

  • 18. Any characters you co-own?

Nope, although there is an OC I inherited more than anything—Ness' roommate and co-founder of Otaku Journalism, Zelda, though she isn't on Toyhouse owing to a chronic lack of development. In a similar vein, I am really curious to—if not co-own a character—make one with someone else again. It's a lot more fun to bounce ideas back & forth than sit in your own little mind-prison so I can definitely see the appeal.

  • 19. If you had to give up all your ocs but one, which would you keep?

I simply would not. RIP to the rest of you but I'm different. (It would depend on if I knew where or to whom they were going, realistically!)

  • 20. Any characters based off of show/book/movie/game?

All of them! Literally, all of them. Most of them are Splatoon, a few are Pokémon, and one is Minecraft.

  • 21. Your smartest character?

It depends on the specific intelligence! All of them are smart (and profoundly stupid) in their own ways. In terms of like... 'traditional' intelligence, critical thinking and logical-mathematical, Marlo has excellent organizational ability, and can break things down into their individual components easily. She also has no concept of long-term consequences. Logic is also one of Ness' strengths, although he could easily fool you into thinking otherwise. He has the greatest variety of intelligences—linguistic of course, he is the most self-aware of all my OCs, and musical ability comes quick to him, too. He, Phee, and Rome all have excellent spatial awareness and physical capability.

Andy's got specialized labor skills, as does Marlo; Perdita is a brilliant engineer but lacks interpersonal, intrapersonal, and kinesthetic skills. Adonis has a mind for business and is fluent in all manner of social situations. Crush can navigate and intuit technology a dozen times better than I can, but also has no concept of long-term consequences. I could go on...

  • 22. Your clumsiest character?

Even before Marlo was disabled they had a reputation as a klutz—not to the point of absurdity, but it didn't do them any favors in the campaign. Sure, they could clamber over boulders like a mountain goat, but ask them to walk down the sidewalk and they'd trip over their own shoelaces.

  • 23. Your evilest character?

I mean. That's not an easy question to answer, and by design. A lot of them are, by some definition, and all those same folks aren't really! Marlo's done some reprehensible things, but at least pursues betterment. Rome did the same to a much lesser extent, but isn't really regretful or remorseful. Perdita would call Marlo evil without a second thought, but has committed a few war crimes to preserve what's precious to her too! Do what you have to to cope! None of them are consciously, actively, cartoonishly, evil. That's kind of the point of their stories! You're supposed to examine their subjectivity.

  • 24. Your sweetest character?

Calypso! She's a cuttlefish and heads the Octarian exhibits at Shellendorf Institute.

  • 25. Do you have a season/holiday themed character?

Only one of them has a design, but Sugar and Spice and Snips and Snail all fit the bill! Designs for all the latter three are on the to-do list, but pretty low-priority. (unless I find a suitable adopt, of course, ahem—)

  • 26. A character you are currently wanting to rehome more than any?

None!

  • 27. Which of your character's names do you like most?

"Blake Hackett", who is on Toyhouse but unviewable. I love the repetitive consonants and her surname is a fun prod at the fact she's an absolute hack—she was made for that Galar gymsona trend, part of an unofficial league, and specializes in combining overwhelming offense with underhanded tactics. And although the novelty's worn off, I'll always have a soft spot for "Marlo Sturmaz", because Sturmaz is the best surname I've ever come up with (it's the Proto-German root word for storm) and I fought really hard to settle on Marlo after growing to hate Soda. RIP to that alliteration, though.

  • 28. Which character have you drawn most?

Guess. No, really. First two don't count.

  • 29. Any hybrid characters?

I'm not really sure what "hybrid" is meant to mean, like a combination of custom species or something (?) but I have a couple characters that are hybrids in-universe. Marlo and Adonis are Giant Inkling/Harlequin Octoling mixes, their mother Ellis is a Humboldt Inkling/Harlequin Octoling, and Ness is a Golden Bobtail/Ornate Sleeper Ray.

  • 30. Your most unique character?

That one goes either to Ness or Newt, the sand-dollar! While Ness does bear a striking resemblance to the aforementioned OC he took his freckles from, I don't think I've seen another stingray hybrid, forget one that operates on similar rules to him. Newt is also half-inspired by someone else's sand-dollar OC, but multiple folks have sounded surprised when I mentioned him, so I'll give him the honorable mention.
