...This is probably why you put me up for adoption pretty immediately, huh? [He laughs a little.] It's cool. It's cool...
I'm so sorry I couldn't protect you better. You don't HAVE to forgive me, I just... I never thought it would be this bad. (I wish Pen were here.)
I hope Sam's okay... I can't even leave to go check on her. Should I send Tomino? Or maybe Gennie?
[This is the first time that Sam has been out of work this long without notice. This isn't like her. However, from what Veronica can glean from her older brother's correspondence, he's navigating the bureaucratic nightmare that is trying to get Samantha some emergency intervention without institutionalizing her outright. Hopefully she feels better soon.]
[In the weeks leading up to her sudden disappearance from work, Samantha had been dropping hints at her deteriorating mental health by not only making self-deprecating jokes, but also acting like she's been seeing things that others can't... And not in a magical way.]
Okay, I just gotta follow this map Lady Argyle gave me and I should be able to get to Samantha's place in no time! I /knew/ I should've spoken up about Lady Pendleton's strange visions... You better be okay, Sammy!
[He's been worried sick looking for Samantha in her usual sleepwalking spots. She shouldn't have been able to get outside, but it looks like the locks were broken apart entirely. He's choking back tears as he calls out her name. He can't lose her, too.] ...Sammy? Samantha? /Samantha/! (Oh God, where is she?)
...I don't need him, and he doesn't need me. Things will be better after I ascend.
[Cimontton dreams of the tinkling sound of bells, the quiet rush of flipped book pages; he dreams of the powdery scent of a bird's feathers, the fluffy touch of fur; but he dreams of the crisp red skin of a juicy apple most of all. It's always a good dream when his devotee comes to gossip. He speaks through the cards, snoring with a smile on his snout.]
Our newest receptionist. She's a joy to have around and very popular with the patrons. She makes good recommendations, especially when it comes to romance novels. Although I wish she'd limit her fantasizing to the written word. [Veronica feels a little bad, lying to Gennie and letting the sigilwork effect her, but its better for everyone if the staff and patrons of Myrefall just... don't notice their respective differences.]
The Lady of the Library! Lady Argyle is always gracious to anyone who crosses the library's threshold, and I'm just as inclined to follow her example.
Shh, hey. Hey... [He raises his hands to show he's not going to do anything to Sam.] Let's put down the knife, and maybe we can talk this out? Does that sound good?
... [She doesn't know what to do. She loves Zania, and she just wants to feel less lonely, but the angels are screaming at her to ascend.] I don't know. I don't KNOW! I... I'm scared...!
