Races

There are many species in the OoHverse. Here's a spattering of them. I will not say it's all of them, simply so that I can add more later if I need to.

Demons

Demons reside in Hell. All demons have limited shape-shifting, incredible resistance to poison, and the ability to resurrect in Hell thanks to the Hell Nexus. The Hell Nexus also grants them the Gift of Tongues, allowing them to learn new languages at a rapid rate. Demons also have superhuman empathy, though they primarily use their incredible ability to understand what other people are feeling for malicious purposes. How convenient it is for a master manipulator to know exactly when they made their victim feel just a little bit more upset, even if they hid it as much as they could. A demon's limited shapeshifting means their appearance always matches their identity, which is important because as Demons can live for as long as they want, their identity tends to be fluid. The vast majority of demons may change gender, every few centuries at the least.

Hell's culture prizes Cunning and Selfishness above all else. It is considered normal for "friends" to be truly self-interested, only forming an alliance when it's convenient. Showing genuine generosity for someone is seen as weak, so when it's done, a demon always makes it abundantly clear they want something in return, even if deep down that was not their intention. The average denizen of Hell believes themselves to be innately evil... but demons born on Earth, away from the toxic culture of Hell, prove this to be false. Demons have a Council of Sins, a group of the Seven most powerful demons, each one in charge of a seperate section of Hell. They have a shaky alliance amongst themselves, as they all know that if a single member tried to be the sole ruler of Hell, the other six would gang up and dispose of the one.

Demons can be subclassified as follows

  • Archdemons: Considered the most "powerful" breed of demon, these include Balrogs, Mariliths, Harts, and more. Though, being an Archdemon doesn't guarantee you a high spot in society, you are judged by your capabilities alone. An imp can supercede a balrog if the imp is more cunning or powerful.
  • Emotivores: Demons that eat emotion. These include Foocubi, and a few others.
  • Fiends: These are Demons who, by the the classifications of Magic Users, would fall in a twilight zone between unawakened and awakened. All Fiends of the same species have their powers manifest in exactly the same way, and while a Fiend can never truly awaken and have powers distinct from other fiends, it is completely 100% unheard of for a Fiend to have no powers at all.
  • Daemolisks: Terrifying demons who, by the classifications of Magic Users, are always awake from birth. Unlike fiends, their powers may manifest in different ways, and they can be any of the six type of awakened magic users, but they always revolve around the same "schools" of magic. Sheolisks always deal in undeath and unholy energy, for instance, and Apollisks always revolve around destruction (even though magic cannot truly destroy, an Apollisk is at least able to shred things to dust).
  • There are other demons that don't fit into any of these classifications, such as Onis and Imps.

Unlike many species out there, Demons are able to interbreed with other Demons of different types, or even with Angels, creating hybrids. Some even believe that Demons and Angels even share a common ancestor.

There's a WIP list of more demons here

Angels

Angels reside in Heaven. They are the antithesis to Hell, but at the same time have an equally toxic culture. Just like the Hell Nexus, the Heaven Nexus grants angels resurrection and the gift of tongues, and Angels also have the same limited shapeshifting as Demons. Unlike Demons, Angels lack empathy compared to the average human, and are weak to poisons. The Heaven Nexus also gives each angel a pair of wings. To be cut off from the Heaven Nexus also means an angel would lose their wings.

Angel culture has a strict importance on Order, and Sacrifice. All things can be discarded in the eternal quest for the Greater Good, whatever that may be. All angels have a predetermined spot in life depending on their species. Seraphim are the ruling class, and only 777 are allowed to exist at a time, no more and no less. All other angels have jobs, as messengers, soldiers, defenders, guardians... or just keeping Heaven running smoothly.

Humans and Monsters

Humans are considered the Baseline Mortal. All Monsters were initially descended from humans, including Fairies, Giants, Animal-people, and the many, many miscellanious monster species, such as Gorgons and Futakuchi-Onnas (NOTE TO SELF / WHOEVER READS THIS: must find gender neutral term for Futakuchi-Onna).

Monster people cannot interbreed with other monsters of a different species, but all are capable of doing so with humans. This has a 50/50 chance of producing a human or another monster, but the human may be a "carrier" carrying a non-dominant monster gene, and two "carrier" humans may suddenly have a monster child. Needless to say, this is pretty rare.

New monster species have been created by many means, but it's always rare. Usually caused by mutation via ambient magic, or by interference from a Demiurge.

Magical Beasts

Just like how Monsters are magically mutated Humans, all Magical Beasts are magically mutated Animals (and sometimes plants). There are many magical beasts out there, from Tsuchinokos to Unicorns, but of course the most well-known is the Dragon. Descended from magically mutated dinosaurs, these giant feathery lizards are intelligent enough to have souls, and capable of travellng between realms, but they rarely if ever visit Earth at this point.

Demonic / Angelic Beasts

Quite simply, these describe the wildlife native to Heaven and Hell. Unlike Earth's animals, these beasts are much more often very magical and very dangerous, though there are a few with no magic whatsoever.

Spirits

Formed when the Dreamworld intersects Purgatory, these beasts are mindless pseudo-phsyical constructs. They are barely alive, with about as much intelligence as a jellyfish, yet are capable of causing significant amounts of mayhem by acting solely on instinct. Spirits are always based around concepts and emotions, sometimes very complex. And, when properly bound, they can be helpful servants. Spirits are sensitive to any sort of shift between realms. While many spirits will manifest on Earth, they do so in great numbers whenever something Big and Realm-Spanning is about to happen. Or sometimes they may just manifest in larger numbers because the distance between Purgatory and Earth is shorter than usual, it's always hard to say.

Demiurges

The last race that I am going to talk about here is the most mysterious of them all. When God committed divine suicide and split into seven parts, it wasn't necessarily a clean cut. Countless fragments broke off of various sizes, creating Demiurges.

There is no consistensy amongst them. Some are as weak as cockroaches, while others could destroy the Earth in an instant. Some are intelligent and have souls, while others are simply mindless and gibbering. They are not bound by the rules of magic, and many have powers that exist outside its limitations. Each demiurge is immortal, born at the moment of the universe's creation. Some have gone down in history as Gods, for instance Anansi is not only a real being, but a Demiurge at that. Other notable demiurges include Cthulhu (yes, really), the Sphinx, and Charbydis.
