Prior to Nando's death, he had been Bassi's closest friend. The little demon boatswain was responsible for Bassi not getting thrown off La Llorona, and even took Bassi into his mates and taught him useful skills like reading and writing. While Nando managed to be a frequent source of aggravation, which Bassi accurately figured to be intentional on Nando's part, he still had a (sometimes) charming nature and truly seemed to care passionately about his work and those around him.
In spite of Nando's obnoxious ways, Bassi came to admire him and, in time, love him dearly. Knowing that any confession of this would risk their friendship, Bassi's position as an officer, and otherwise put himself in danger, he kept it to himself--and the eternally oblivious boatswain never seemed to guess.
But then Nando died in a dragon's fire. The former boatswain's death was hard on Bassi and he grieved it for a long time. Time went by, though, and Bassi carried on in Nando's place, and although he often still missed his friend, he had come to accept it. Until Nando returned.
The vampire's return has caused a lot of confusion for Bassi. He's amazed, glad, and overwhelmed to have his dear friend back, and is very concerned for Nando's state, but things aren't the same as they once were. It's been ten years, and neither one is quite the same person they were before. Nando hardly even spends much time on the ship, and Bassi doesn't know what to do, now.
