"... I was engaged."
That was the first thing Zack had said all night, and dawn was already breaking. His forehead was bandaged and he leaned against the door frame, gazing at the fire. "She owned the pet shop. It was a family business, but she was all that was left of it. I visited her as much as I could and helped around, and eventually we fell in love." He grew quiet again, his gaze getting distant.
"... We both knew I'd outlive her. At first we were fine with that, but then we started talking about what it would be like if she could live with me forever. We liked that idea."
He clenched his jaw. Pain broke through his stoic expression.
"I've never made anyone a vampire before. I thought it would be fine. She... She couldn't handle the transformation. She lost her mind and started attacking everyone and everything. I..."
A choked sound interrupted him. Clenching his fist, he dropped his head in shame.
"I had to stop her. I lost my arm and got these scars, but the worst of it was losing her. And it was all my fault." He shuddered with a cry, tears dropping to the floor as he held himself. "My parents were hunted for being vampires. I grew up thinking it wasn't fair because they never hurt a soul, but now I'm not so sure... I'm not so sure monsters like us deserve to live."

".....Shit." Jack ran his fingers through his hair as he stared at the other man. He frowned.

"I know my words sound hollow but, I'm sorry. I'm sorry that this happened to you," Jack said. He seated himself better on his chair, as his hands still rested in his hair. He'd always been on the 'losing control' side of things and it was..Hard..maybe even to hurtful to think about being the one that wás in control. Jack shook his head. "I..For all that it's worth, I don't think you're a heartless monster," Jack said. "You reflect and you feel. You care and you honored her by taking care of her pet-shop. You're human," Jack muttered. "You're good. And there's so much good you still can do," Jack said.

He slowly removed his hands out of his hair. Then held out a hand to him. "Thank you," Jack said. Charismatic like always. "For trusting me with this..."
