Were your OCs ever compared to another character?

108 Votes Yes, they were
24 Votes No, they were not

I assume that many of us have stumbled upon this, because getting your OC compared to characters from media is inevitable - but what are your thoughts on this, after all? Do you like it? Do you hate it with a burning passion? Or maybe you just don't mind when it happens?

Personally, I am the type who hates it with a burning passion. It's not a positive thing for me at all (I do know that some people don't mean it the wrong way, but it still pisses me off), as I try to make my OCs as original as I can (and will redesign them if I'm not satisfied with their look). I mean, wouldn't you just lose it if your favourite/comfort OC was compared to the same character 40 times (or even more)? Lmao I don't even feel like I'm gonna recover from this haha as a side effect I have developed a burning hatred for that character, to the point where I shudder whenever I see him

Okay, now it's yall's turn, I wanna hear the epic stories and opinions. I don't know if I'm just crazy or is that common lmao

Luckily pretty much all of the characters I have are original enough not to get compared to an existing canon character, so I've never had to deal with a lot of it. There was one time a friend of mine said that one of my Wings of Fire oc's looked like a character that exists in the book. I looked said character up, and other then just having the same/similar color scheme (it can be kind of hard to make up a unique color scheme for a WoF oc since color combinations depend on the tribe, so there's a limited range you can only work with and no doubt you're bound to run into another character with a color scheme similiar/exact to yours), the character had their own physical traits that the canon character didn't have. Was really a minor thing that didn't bother me, nd they took their claim back when I compared two images and pointed out the differences.

I can definitely imagine it would irritate/annoy most people though to have characters of theirs compared to a canon character, especially multiple times. And I feel bad for users who have to deal with it, especially if it's traits that are used a lot in character designs. Then again, I also have a pretty laidback/calm attitude so if any of my characters were somehow compared, it wouldn't really be much of a bother and I would just either ignore or politely correct the accuser.

I'm sure this has happened to me but not in a way that I remember it.  I've had my style compared to other styles and I usually find it complimentary.

There was a time in the early 2010s when any art style that was semi-cartoony was getting compared to Scott Pilgrim.  It didn't happen to me, but I heard a LOT of artists complaining about it.  This would have been around the time that the movie came out, so I guess that was some people's go-to for modern comic styles.  I've had my writing style compared to Scott Pilgrim, and I guess it's accurate sorta.

I know right?! Its very confusing and its the reason that I was taken aback whenever people mistook him for the Nowhere King.

Luckily it hasn't happened lately so that's nice.

Either way, thanks for the kind words-- it means a lot to me.

I voted no until I remembered that my character was compared to some animated film character? I mean, i can see it, but that's super disheartening and rude imo. Did they really feel like they had to comment on that similarity, especially since I didn't base the character off of that one? What did they even hope to achieve? I really dislike my creations being compared to anyone else's, and I have this irrational fear that I will be accused of doing something bad for no reason, so I've been thinking of changing my character's design, but I don't know in what way. Ink is already fine as is imo, as its design fits its concept p well, but I now associate its current design with being compared, and I really don't like it anymore. I wish people would think before they comment.

I’ve never really had mine compared to anything, but to be honest? I don’t think I’d mind it at all. As Dia said, most people who make comparisons are just trying to start a conversation and don’t have any bad intentions by doing so. They’re just noticing a similarity to something they already know, and probably enjoy, and I don’t see anything wrong with that.

Then again, though, originality isn’t usually something I personally stride for. A lot of my favorite OCs were inspired by music I like and at the end of the day complete and total originality is pretty much impossible. Sure, I may like to think some of my OCs are unique, but as long as I’m having fun with them, I just don’t really care.

Maybe if my character was coincidentally the exact same as the canon character I’d be a little disheartened, but that isn’t the fault of the person making that comparison imo. If they’re nothing alike, then I’ll just say “I don’t really see it tbh” and that’s it. Although I suppose I see why people would hate this, I personally just don’t see the fuss. Not that I would make comparisons with other people’s characters myself, but yeah.

Edit because I felt it was important to add this: I do see in some cases where the tone of how the person is saying it can be rude. Like if they said “this looks too much like ___” or something, as if they’re trying to accuse you of copying. That wasn’t really what I was referring to and yeah… if someone said this I’d definitely feel a little bit annoyed especially if it wasn’t intentional.

I’ve never had it happen and it wouldn’t really bother me… It’s not a bad thing to me, a lot of the time people are trying to relate the thing you love to the thing they love. I get how it could sting, but in my eyes it’s just them trying to connect

I’m guilty of doing it to my own characters however, because I call Valentine Sephiroth too often. I don’t even know the game I just know silver haired sword wielding edgelord LMAO

A friend always tells me my style looks similar to an artist who's on here that i actually really like. But having my art being compared to theirs makes me feel really unoriginal because I try to make my art unique. I really hate when it happens.

I have had it happen to me MULTIPLE times and most of the time I hate it. Though there is a certain degree of the comparisons just being an annoyance to me hating the comparisons to the point I can't stand it. That degree often sits in how often it is pointed out and how people choose their wording when pointing it out.

For example, someone saying, "The outfit/color palette of X character looks like X character from media," is mostly just a minor annoyance. But I have gotten a lot of people that just comment the media character's name in all caps with question and exclamation marks. I also had people actually quote something the media character said and nothing else. Even had people swear up and down that a character of mine looks just like this other character (or even accusing I, "stole," from the media character) just on the basis of my character being the same species or wearing a similar style of clothing. Those things to me make me despise the comparisons because my character is basically ignored and those people don't even make an attempt to at least pretend to be interested in my character. There's no constructive criticism, no positive input, or anything.

when i was younger my friend said my oc was a lot like a canon character and i completely stopped using him : (
i dont mind it as much now that im older esp if its from friends but if its from strangers it usually comes off kinda rude imo!

JubileeBlues_alt

Oh my god this happens way too often with my persona - he is always being compared to some streamer that i hadn't even ever heard of for the sole reason he had a plant on his head. It is so incredibly upsetting for people to automatically assume that an oc belongs to some fandom or franchise and even go to the lengths to try and prove it. Like WTF ???

It's at the point where I've contemplated completely changing his appearance just to avoid all the criticism - but i won't. He is MY character and no one has any say on what i should do with him.

I mean it hurts to have a character you've put so much time and love into - and think that the design is at least somewhat original - only for someone to come along and ask (or in some cases arguethat it's this completely different character that you probably have never even heard of.

Fennec spunkzoid

some comparisons i feel are justified, especially if your oc was derived from that particular character in media, but i feel like sometimes people compare your character to fictional characters because of extremely minor details and it's just? flat out wrong? character IC was compared to Tord from Eddsworld for being... i dunno, in a hoodie and having horns?

i feel like it's also the way that people phrase their comparisons that determines whether i get offended or not... "hey, X character kinda looks like X" is totally fine, but (in IC character's case) a person commented on a video i made of him saying, "OMG, TORD IS THAT YOU?!" ... and ngl i got kinda upset over it lmao
