What Are Your Character Profile Pet Peeves?

Posted 2 months, 18 days ago (Edited 2 months, 18 days ago) by Blaklyte

What are your pet peeves when it comes to people creating profiles for their characters? Is there a specific layout you don't like when people use? Not enough words? Too many words?? Or maybe its something as simple as people not giving their characters a profile picture lol.

Personally i get bothered when people use excessive watermarks on the images in a character's gallery, its one thing to want to protect your art, i completely understand that as an artist myself, but. plastering your image top to bottom with a huge watermark at 80% opacity is absurd to me. I cant even see the image at that point :/

I'm simply curious to see what little things people dislike seeing in a character page. Don't signal anyone out and be civil. Just because someone doesn't like something doesn't mean everyone must abide to a specific standard!

Wanna talk about aspects of a character profile you like? Check out this thread's counterpart!

Blaklyte OH MY GOD THIS- I hate when a character looks really cool but I can’t see any images on them and it’s been days since the character was originally uploaded (so it’s not like they just uploaded the character and are working on images.).  I also feel like having every single image of a character thumbnailed in a way where it’s just showing a hand or zoomed in part is equally as annoying.  Like I  gotta know what the character looks like and may even wanna draw them

I see a lot of people saying page dolls, but I think they can be really cute aslong as they are coded for both desktop AND mobile to be small and not in the way !!

this is more about Th itself than users. well both ig.

- the fact that adding one billion tags is a thing that makes the profile really awful and annoying to scroll. there should either be a tag limit, or a maximum height for this box which would change to a scrollable box.

- tabs with way too long names which makes the side menu confusing and unorganized to look at. it should have a character limit, or adjust to the max width of the sidebar e.g. ❌ This is a tab with a very long title, ✔ This is a tab w...

I posted here before, but I just remembered something! This is more about my own characters rather than other people's, but:

- Offsite creator/designer credits. It displays the full URL in your character's credit section and there's nothing you can do to tidy it up if you don't like the way it looks. It also gets messy if you've got a character with multiple designers and/or a mix of onsite and offsite credits.

page dolls
they make buttons harder to get to

Edit: sure you can code em to make em smaller, the fact is not many do so

I mean I personally really like when people have a bunch of tabs, in my opinion it shows how much people work on their ocs. The one thing I don't like is when there is a bunch of empty tabs for no specific reason, or there is a whole ass tab for one small piece of AU art, like just put it in a sub-gallery? Idk, personal preference. Also tab dividers? I really don't like them for some reason— it really irks me to just have a whole empty tab for the sole purpose of having the title as

 " .°•——•°☆°•——•°. "

or something

if the css actively obscures part of ui/scales in a way that it does [im dyslexic and have the site slightly zoomed in]

other sins include tiny ass text, text unbroken by paragraphs, using fancy unreadable fonts for main text body

i dont actually always mind unfilled themes so long as they're not super long and clearly have been picked out for this guy specifically

info wise, i honestly kinda hate when there is a likes/dislikes block and not much else. its a same pet peeve i have for references that elect to have text too. i don't know Anything about this character's personality or tangible interests but i guess i know they like strawberries? cool. ive learned nothing.

it's a fun thing to have on the side, but why would it be something you prioritize over anything else i don't understand

I've been browsing a lot lately and noticed something I wanted to post.

And that is: No summarised section

...really any section telling me what the character is even about. It's awesome that you have 10 boxes telling me about their past and trivia.. but what is this character even up to? What is their job/ or school, family, life, where do they live, do they have hobbies? What is the reason for this character?

Many profiles are highly professional & complex with very (sometimes a-bit-too-hard-to-understand-for-me) english, to make the character sound more complex and filled out, when in reality its literally 5 paragraphs telling me a single adjective about the character. It's something completely different if you want to elaborate later on. But if I want to know briefly what your character is like, then this is highly annoying (and exhausting) for me and something I will not bother reading unless I have the brain captivity and energy for it.... I understand some users like this type of writing and prefer it over slightly more simplistic wording. I am not even talking about the simplest of types here, because I don't quite like it either, but for me this is painful. And translators aren't always that great. I have watched and consumed several media in english and don't have any issue understanding any of it. which.. says a lot imo.

Characters without this style of writing are so, so much more enjoyable. I feel like its simply a genre I don't dig or something. idk

Not targeted at anyone in particular, but I am not a huge fan of HTML character layouts that sacrifice accessibility for aesthetic, like I know they're pretty and all, but this is why I prefer either simple layouts or codes that are both accessible and aesthetically pleasing to me. 🥲

Profile CSS I turned them off cause people’s layouts confuse me and I’ve encountered a couple where back buttons or important buttons are missing

My biggest one are people who put a DNI or some other text they want people to read on the profile / character warnings. Profile warnings should only contain actual warnings like if there’s eye bleed, gore, etc.. I get they want people to read their stuff but I noticed most people that put a DNI in the warnings don’t actually put warnings even though they need to and it really irks. I don’t care if people have a DNI list just don’t put it in the warning box and put it on your profile or a bulletin instead. Also putting it on the warning box is a bad idea because you can’t access it again once you accept and some people have warnings turned off so it’s best to put it somewhere else where people are able to refer back to it
